Incredible to see the orchestra members' faces as they intently fix their eyes on Buddy, meticulously waiting for the exact moment to resume playing after his drum solo. They almost seem frightened.

The greatest big band drummer of all time....The speed and the left hand are the most amazing thing about Buddy Rich... Definitely the GOAT!!!!

He may have played mostly big band jazz, but it's obvious this guy could've picked up any form of music old or modern and completely dominate every other drummer trying to make a name for themselves.

Each time I got to see him perform live it was like magic. He was incredible. And his bands were amazing. The first time I saw him perform live was at a local high school when I was in my teens. He asked if there were any drummers in the audience. Of course many raised their hands. He chose a small boy to come up onto the stage to play his drums for a few minutes. A dream of a lifetime. It was such a nice thing for him to do. Incredible memories of seeing him perform live, plus all those performances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. His skills were truly out of this world. Traps, the drum wonder!

Hands down the absolute best ever! I grew up watching Buddy's performances on "The Tonight Show," and I also got to see him live. What an amazing performer. Very few people had that hand speed and accuracy of this guy. Neil Peart, Carl Palmer , and Ian Paice from Deep Purple come close, but jazz is completely different thing to play, and Buddy was the best. I've also watched him with "drum offs" with Gene Krupa, Max Roach, Louie Bellson, and others, but Buddy was so fast and so clean that no one could touch him.

No the orchestra is mesmerized just like everybody else who watches Buddy Rich play the drums it's not a big fancy drum set give this man a pair of drumsticks and he could probably play on anything and make it sound awesome the man is so quick and aware of where every piece of kit is❤ he is the grandfather of G.O.A.T s

5:16 "It was just too easy for him!" Excellent observation, and something that seemed to separate Buddy from all others. If he could think it, he could play it. He had no limitations.

God worked things out for me to see him my one and only time. It was in Gresham, Oregon, while I was just up at Mt. Hood Community College playing tennis and the Festival of Jazz was there. Being somewhat poor at the time, I didn't have tickets, even though Buddy was going to be there with Mel Torme. So my tennis pal and I got done playing and were walking to our cars and we saw a Gresham policeman doing security at the gig, and he was a high school buddy of ours we hadn't see for 4-5 years, and we recognized "Neil" and we went over to talk to him. As we are just shooting the shit, a couple leaves the venue and walks beside us and then asked if we want their tickets, as they have to leave because of baby sitter issues. We walk in, tennis togs on, and carrying tennis bags. We find a usher and ask where the tickets are seated, and he takes us down to the third row from the stage, and Buddy came on 1/2 hour later. I can't even describe all that had to fall together by pure chance that allowed me to see him up close, and hear Mel Torme working with him. Unbelievable.

Drumming is an art form, Buddy Rich was probably the best exhibition drummer of all time, but apart from that designation: it's more a matter of preference. And any further comparison is the proverbial apples vs oranges.😮😊😅

You could remove the audio and just show the face of that dude off to the right side .......that alone is something you'll never see even from one person out of a stadium crowd of audience members. To be there must have been miraculously mind blowing somehow beyond the videos we're witnessing as skilled drummers in total awe.

It’s too bad there was never a recorded drum solo of his in his younger day, I think the earliest was when he was 48 years old. That show with Jerry Lewis which he appeared on but never anything when he was in his 20’s or even 30’s which would be interesting, to say the least

There are earlier recorded solos around and a few are on RU-vid- a couple when he was with Tommy Dorsey in the early 1940's and a recording of him doing a snare drum solo at age 12 which would have been recorded in 1929.
