Toad is not a drum solo. It's a fully realised piece of music composed for drum set. Ginger first recorded it on Cream's debut album in 1966. It has evolved over the last 50 years and is never played the exact same way live. Ginger's kit always sounds tuneful and melodic.

I learned to play the drums in the 6os listening to likes of Keith Moon, John Bonham, Ginger Baker and Mitch Mitchell...more or less in that order Ginger's first solo Toad on Fresh Cream, I consider to be the benchmark drum solo. He demonstrated sheer musicality and precision in the way he transitioned from one rhythm to another. An absolute master. I was lucky enough to see him albeit in his later years. He has a great legacy of work behind him. He 'made' Sunshine of your Love with that pounding rhythm on 1 and 3 in the bar.

I loved everything about this solo and let’s not forget, Baker had an amazing ear for tuning his kit to work optimum for his otherworldly drumming style. So much substance and hypnotic timing. It’s astonishing one man could contain and use it like he did.

Your comments "So musical" and "tribal" summarized GB perfectly. African rhythms seemed to be in his DNA (He eventually moved to Nigeria). His post-Cream band Air Force is heavily afro-influenced, well worth a listen. Ginger was originally a jazz drummer who became a "rock star". He was a composer and arranger as well as a percussionist - a complete musician. This was one of his better "toads", interesting, complex, inventive, precise. His first one on "Fresh Cream" was his best IMO. An eccentric (and sometimes violent) man, he was one of a kind

According to comments on the original video this was done in 2005 so he would have been 65 and he passed away in 2019

Correct. This was their Royal Albert Hall performance, I believe. I also recall seeing the separate interviews about that performance and Ginger was talking about the second night not being as good as the first night, or vice versa. Then they cut to Jack Bruce and he was rolling his eyes. Then they cut back to Ginger and he's got his fingers up by his temple with his eyes shut shaking his head in disdain. Funny interplay between the two. It is a shame I cannot find those interviews about their 2005 reunion.

I'm not a drummer and most drum solos go over my head, but as a guitarist who went through 3 copies of "Wheels of Fire," for me the drumming on "Spoonful" from that recording is among the best drumming I've ever heard. Also, the live version of "N.S.U." from "Live Cream - Vol. 1" is amazing. Ginger's tone is frequently overlooked, but it really stands out here. Ginger made a record with Charlie Haden (Bass) and Bill Frisell (Guitar) and selections from that record, along with live versions of those songs, are available on RU-vid.

There were elements of this which reminded me of Neil Peart's Frankfurt drum solo. Neil was known as the Professor but he was also always the student and wanted to keep learning. I'm sure that aside from Buddy Rich that Ginger was also someone he very much admired.

If I was too recommend anything it would be his drum battle he had with one of his icons Art Blakey, it truly shows he could keep up with even the best jazz guys - the full version if possible!

Baker is phenomenal - nobody can touch him to this day. Watch this one - I had to hold the top of my head on, I was yelling and screaming, my dog thought I lost my mind, I actually started crying at the sheer talent that Ginger Baker had. Never in my life have I heard a solo like this - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uLQAzrZ4F9c.html

My three favorite rock drummers are Baker, Peart, and Bonham. Mind you I am a die hard Led Zeppelin fan. However, none of them could ever hold a candle to the GOAT, Buddy Rich. And I don't even like jazz!

BUDDY RICH?!?!? SERIOUSLY?!?!?! Don't confuse moving fast with actually making music, all Rich did in his solos was make fast noise, Baker hated him and I agree 😢

Gee thanks for sharing your opinion. They have very different intentions. Such as, Buddy did not use African beats like Ginger. They're both in the very top level-- pointless to rank them once you're at that stage.
