Eva recorded this performance live at Blues Ally in 1996 . She passed away a few months later on Nov 2 , 1996 ! I think "Over The Rainbow" hit number one in England but i never heard it on radio in the US ! Check out "Fields Of Gold" from the same concert !
This was in the 1990s. Eva passed away in her 30s from cancer. It started as skin cancer and spread through out her body. She didn't get attention until after death. She has a wonderful voice. I would recommend Stormy Monday.
Eva singing this song always makes me cry. To me she is singing about heaven but little did she know at the time very shortly she would be there. I think this is the most beautiful thing that has ever been recorded.
Recorded in 1996 at Blues Alley in Washington DC along with a whole set you might want to check out. She died exactly 10 months after of melanoma cancer. She is a true original and supremely talented. Taken much too soon but look what she left for us. Thank you for keeping Eva's legacy alive and for your comments. Sorry you are having a tough time. Just keep putting on foot in front of the other and moving forward.
Dude, I grew up in the county next to Eva's but never come across her in the DC area. I only discovered her too late as she was already ill and it haunts me that I missed out on such a talent. She had a gift of interpretation and of course that voice, the timbre---greatest all around female vocalists I've ever heard. I'm a classic/hard rock and blues guy but Eva just kills me every time, she made you feel things you didn't know you had inside you! I love her and miss her. The world is cheated by all the great music we'll never get to hear from her
Lots of suggestions for more Eva songs, and they're all good, believe me! Not sure if anyone else has recommended Autumn Leaves, but that should be on your list for sure. Choose her performance that was at this same concert, Blues Alley in 1996. But honestly, absolutely anything you choose will be a winner. She was one in a billion.
Yeah, she was really something else man! And, as I'm sure many have told you by now, there's a strong story behind her art and all to belated recognition ❤
Eva was close with my friend Mary Ann. There are a couple of RU-vid videos of them singing together but unfortunately the recording quality isn't good because it's just someone's shaky phone camera, but Eva really has a big sort of underground following now.
@@markritter3013 old digital video camera then? It picks up every sound in the bar. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vML4f-9IpyY.htmlsi=73MfGz8i9E4Kzu7I
I just found out about it this morning. And she is from the town over from where I grew up. So she is a homegrown talent that I will always support from now on. Such a sad story though 😞
@L33Reacts for years Eva was known as the greatest singer nobody knows. She became internationally known 5 years after her death. She had record companies chasing her wanting to make her a pop star. She refused because she only wanted to sing what she likes. She made this song her own. People familiar with Judy Garland's version know the difference
Eva Cassidy was so incredible what a voice and talent. It was such a tragedy and loss to the world when she died of cancer at only 33 years old in 1996, but her music will forever live on. Some other Eva Cassidy recommendations are Danny Boy, Time After Time, Fields Of Gold, Autumn Leaves, What A Wonderful World, Songbird. Thank you for your reaction.
She was a master of phrasing and vocal control. Such an incredible and lovely irridescent voice that moves people to their core. So sad she passed so young.
Another lost talent. I knew Eva and I miss her almost daily. This is at Blues Alley in Washington DC, an intimate venue and perfect for her. It's hard to listen to her without crying. 💔
Another interesting take on this song was done in the mid 90s by a Hawaiian named Kamakawiwo’ole. Like this one, done beautifully, but different. Sadly he died not long after he made it big. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V1bFr2SWP1I.htmlsi=v4Upfp5Wii9OFDUF
Eva had a following in the East before she passed away shortly after this performance. Somehow she started getting plays in the UK and it spread from there and she became a worldwide phenomenon.
Paul Walters (radio producer heard about Eva from a colleague. He was Terry Wogan's producer. Top show on BBC radio; one play and Terry did the rest. RIP Eva, Paul and Terry.
@violetflame23 she was one of two artists from the DC area I enjoyed. Danny Gatton was a wonderful guitarist that never got the recognition he deserved
It's difficult to ignore such a beautiful and classic song like "Over the Rainbow". Lots of artists have attempted to put their stamp on it and very few have succeeded. Of course, in my view, the definitive version was sung by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz. It's hard to top that! James Taylor's brother Livingstone did a nice cover in the early 1970s on his first album.
I do think Eva's takes the win. Clapton's is great and another great one is by the (also) late John Martyn (from the Foundations tour/album ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zET-ozTletY.htmlsi=7J5HCR6PIInVG6Zh).
