I asked drummers for one piece of drumming advice. This is the drumming advice that those drummers gave me.
Not everyone had insightful drumming advice, but in this video I'll be sharing what I thought was some of the best advice a drummer can get. This is perfect if you're just starting out and you're not sure what advice to listen to.
Having access to a plethora of information can really confuse us and dilute the truth about drumming and drumming techniques. This video was created in hopes that it will help you better understand the truths about drumming advice.

best drummer advice; if you enjoy playing dont give up, keep working at it and just have fun with it, dont get discouraged, there is always room for improvement its not about the destination, its a journey (: edit; also be open for criticism and take advice on how to improve, never be ashamed to seek help, because you could be doing something wrong and feel stuck like you aren't improving always experiment and dont rely on others setups to dictate how you set up yours, find what setup makes you comfortable and go with that, but alternatively do not be afraid to branch out of yoyr comfort zone as well lastly metroonomes/click tracks are your friend but you will also go a lot further if you plag with others!! edit 2; lastly covers are great, but if you really wanr to branch out try to compose your own unique groves, practice because you want to not because you feel obligated to, but also understand you can never improve if you dont put in the effortthanks for coming to my cam talk

As to number two, while I think you're generally right, as a listener sometimes the drummer "over playing" can add valuable points of interest to a song. A good example of this would be on the album Winter by Oceans of Slumber. Most of the songs are very low key, melancholy in tone. The guitar is mainly ambient, so the vocals carry the music. But they can't carry them alone, and that's where the drums come in. Standard practice would be to match the slow restrained performance of the rest of the band; instead, however, the drummer goes in the opposite direction and plays super active - he sort of fills the role a lead guitar would in other genres, imo. He backed off it for the next album, and the album suffered for it in my opinion. I think the moral of the story is to know the rules and why they exist before you break them. You don't necessarily need to know them consciously, but you need a working knowledge of them. Rigid observance of the rules in boring; breaking rules for the sake of it is chaos.

For real, I play A BIT, of guitar, and it helped me listen to the guitarist while playing drums, and so having a better understanding of how to play

Playing guitar is not bad advice. I myself first start with drums, when we jam, then I play guitar a couple of songs and then a few songs with bass. Then I return to the drums. So then you have become a little warm in the clothes and can take the difficult songs with drums. Works 100% every time.

Have fun..... That is the MAIN rule I always tell people. If you're not having fun there's no point in playing. I have left a small handful of bands because they got too serious and made it about things that were unachievable and it just wasn't fun anymore. So, see ya, good luck chumps. (They ALL broke up BTW) HAVE FUN 🤘🥁🥁🤘

The best advice I ever received was to switch to open-hand playing, with your left hand on the hi-hat, and stop playing cross-handed. Cross-handed playing is a legacy of the early 20th century, as a hangover from an old drum method book that always had you leading with your right hand. Open-hand playing gives you two strong hands and opens up the kit in ways that are almost overwhelming at first. When I made the switch, I was angry I was taught to play cross-handed, because it's so incredibly limiting in comparison, it saps the power of your backbeats, and it's terrible for your back and shoulders.
