John Blackwell is AMAZING

Not one of these comes close to Buddy. He was in a class of his own. A drumming freak of nature. Thank God for his film clips.

Most of the drummer in the video were cymbal destroyer. So that's why i love Peter Erskine^^ (RIP Cymbal and Jazz drummer)

I was there. It was an incredible show. Igoe IMHO did the best job with this style of music but Blackwell who I didn’t know much about at the time put on an impressive performance.

This has really nothing to do with Buddy Rich anymore.. It's all 'bout the money.

Peter Erskine !!! Clearly the best big band drummer from all of these guys. They are all great in their own stuff, but Erskine's playing here just feels so right !

Never seen so many drummers (with the exception of Erskine) works so damn hard to achieve so little...Buddy would have walked out.

Chad Smith playing Birdland! I'm playing that in my school's concert in April, the day before my birthday, actually, and it's a fun song to experiment on. I love it (doing the arrangement from a guy named Tom Wallace). and it's cool to try a fill that's not over the top but would also be something outside my comfort zone (I'm a prog-rock drummer, but my drum teacher has taught me things from a classic jazz background, so it certainly makes it the best of both worlds) Bottom line: Super awesome

@ChiTown7721 I do agree that jazz isn't his best genre to play. I'm just saying he grew up listening to a lot of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa and all those icons.

Buddy is so far ahead of these guys. Don't know why they bothered.

Chad's strength is groove drumming and that's what he did here. Quite frankly, I thought that while blackwell is amazing talent, he was so busy twirling his sticks that he threw himself off time. He ought to listen to Steve Smith's version of "Nutville". That was the best version I've heard of it.

I don't know what pisses me off more; Nick's terrible drumming, or the bassist who obviously wants to be the star of the show.

I began playing "drums" in Cuba Listening to The Beatles and then I came to the USA and Buddy was just unexplainable NOTHING moved except his wrists. I saw him in a drumming clinic and someone asked about Rock drummers and he said he "appreciated" Keith Moon people laughed and in a blink he is doing MATCH GRIP (with stick twirling) and was doing a VERY convicting Keith Moon.. and now look at the Buddy Rich homage UTTER SHIT!

Have some respect for the guy.. he is a decent enough drummer and enjoys what he is doing so screw you haters.. get on your own drumkit instead of criticising what others do with theirs.. Nick showed up to drum so it obviously means a lot for him just because he isn't same calibre as some of the others.. why even say that hateful shit imagine if someone said it about you

@ditto372 I played for fifteen years, in a variety of styles, and the only thing that stopped me was a blown ACL and five pins in my right arm and wrist. Yep, I don't know anything about the art of drumming. The thing I think is funny about all of the comments bashing my opinion is that none of you seem to get the fact that I made note of Chad's talent. He's an excellent drummer, but I don't think this venue is the proper one for him. That's all.

@AnorimoS2008 I'm actually not an idiot, I do know when a drummer is swinging with warmth and feel. Neil himself has expressed his lack of jazz ability in many an interview (and he's not just being humble) Neil is a true rock drummer, and in fact if you watch his solo during the concert he holds a jazz solo for all of 40 seconds before turning it into a rock solo "The Rhythm method" In fact, he even flips his stick around and starts using match grip along with his "straight 8ths)

Boy, I do have to agree with the comments. Putting a BR logo on some music stands simply is just not enough.This is not the original line up. And as great as these drummers are only Peter fit the bill.

I have an issue with drummers showing up to a Buddy Rich tribute concert with a million bass drums and cymbals... I think they should strip down their kits jazz style. A drummer shoudn't be working a double bass pedal during a jazz number...

@cromagmax you said he couldnt play jazz, i said west side story. and no he didnt practice, he only played when he performed. and he played with ease what many of the top drummers see as the holy grail of drumming technique. maybe you should stick to watching drummers you do like rather than posting negative comments on videos of someone who many regard as the best drummer ever to have lived. your not going to change anyones opinion
