I had no idea that was the reason my lips were always dry. And this was such a constant issue that bothered me so much! After I started using only vaseline my life changed. You’re amazing Dr Dray ❤
You still should use SPF to protect your lips from UV rays. Lip thins and contracted as we age is the result of sun exposure, much like skin thins out and becomes leathery.
Since I followed your advice 2-3 years ago, I never had chapped lips again. Vaseline is non-scented, no taste, elegantly shiny and super effective and cheap! I am never gonna buy lip balm again and will continue like that. Thanks Doc!
I get allergic reactions to lanolin which most lip balms have. Discovering CeraVe healing ointment was a game-changer. I've had no issue with the chapped lips since.
I stopped using Vaseline because my lips would get dryer faster. The Vaseline would last 30 minutes tops then my lips would feel tight and dry again. I’ve been using Aquaphor and it’s been working but I truly don’t know what to do about my lips
No literally same. I’ve been using aquaphor religiously. I go thru 1 mini tube every couple of months. I even get up to pee at 2AM and reapply it: I leave it on the corner of my mattress. The moment it dries out, my lips start sticking together and it feels like someone rubbed sand paper on them.
Try simple Propolis balm/salve from your pharmacy (if they have it in your country) literally saved my life cause nothing else worked. Mine has some marigold in it too.
I’ve tried all the different SLS shampoo conditioners and toothpastes and my lips are still dry Aquaphor contains lanolin and even hypoallergenic vegan lip balms still leave my lips dry. Vaseline has never worked for either. I’ve always believed that made them drier than anything else I’ve used.
I was suffering from dry lips from when I was a child one day I looked at a video that was talking about mouth taping for people who breathe through their mouth especially at night… I started doing mouth taping at night with a tape that is gentle for your skin . Lo and behold I have not had dry lips since also my jaw line improved because I was a mouth breather especially at night… try it it might work for you as well I literally spent years on lots of different products before I found this out
The way she talks about Vaseline in her videos/shorts reminds me of the way some mom's talk about VaporRub lol. But seriously, I really like Vaseline for my lips! I use it at night and my lips are so soft the next day.
I started using lip balm that comes in a little tube that you squeeze out, and it's SO much better! it stays on the lips for ages, actually doing it's job, not needing to reapply. Also you don't have to apply it directly to the lips like with a stick, you just squeeze some out onto your finger, which is far more pleasant for me in a sanitary sense; especially since I'm going to have the product for like a year or something lol. So, that's just looking for something with petrolatum in it, yea. Or like, certain oils. Straight-up petroleum jelly doesn't feel as nice on the lips for me, that's more like a grease film that isn't as slippery... but still WAY better than chapsticks.
I hate what I' m gonna advice because I' m an integrist of "show me your formulation and prove me results" regardless of what' s written on your packaging aka brand name buuut... As an isotretinoine periodical consumer, NOTHING re-epithelizes overnight like *Elizabeth Arden* _8 Hours Original Cream_ (the rest of the line is mere cash grabbing🙄). Even the deepest bleeding lip fisure wakes up closed and totally healed. If you kindly accept my reecommendation, ask for a sample and compare with any other product. 8 Hours and barefoot style shoes: the only expensive things I pay with pleasure. Hope it helps. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
Stay hydrated - I had the same issue and I cut out all scented lip products. I stick to Vaseline only for my lips - and I drink lots of water. Also, you have to build up to drinking 2-3 litres of water over a span of a few months. These days I don’t even need a lip balm - my lips feel fine without anything on them.
It took my lips a month to heal after using EOS lip balms. My lips were peeling so badly and weeping blood, it looked like I had pieces of rice paper and blood on my lips. My skin is pretty tough and I've never had an issue with it before using an EOS lip balm.
I agree totally, Lip balms make the lips dry . Dont know why there are ao many fragrance and what not in the lip balm. Bepantane, cerave healing ointment and Paula choice peptide lip is what made my lips hydrated and healed
I always use Vaseline for my lips and still have issues, though I did notice that when I was working at an outdoor music festival they went away…the crew was always pushed to hydrate a lot because of the heat, so I think drinking more water is key too.
Vaseline was the cause of the problem for me. I stopped using it and my lips got a bit worse but within a week, they stopped drying out completely and now I use nothing on them and I don't get chapped or dry lips any more.❤
@@rachelmckitterickVasline seal the moisture, I guess that's why your lips got dry at the end of the day. But if you use it under the right lip moisturizer, it might works miracles.
Vaseline won’t do anything without an oil underneath. It simply prevents moisture from escaping. But if you’re already dry, it won’t do much. You need to put moisture in
Fun theory, but unless your skin is dead and disconnected from the blood supply it will eventually replenish water stores and natural moisturizing factors if you keep drinking water (which you should, for obvious reasons.) So yes putting on Vaseline absolutely does work even without another product under it according to all available data and trials on the topic. Hope this helps!
In my experience, Vaseline doesn't do enough and feels like chapped lips under a layer of grease. Hydrogenated polyisobutene is a bomb ingredient for chapping though. That's why lip masks and glosses work
That feeling you described is why I usually go in with a hydrating serum or moisturizer to the lips before applying Vaseline. That way it’s sealing in a greater amount of hydration
hey Dr Dray, I use vaseline too but I saw somewhere that it can darken your lips If u apply it and go out in sun. Idk it’s true or not. Can you confirm or deny? What’s your say?
I only brush with solid coconut oil melted and mixed with a few drops of clove oil. The coconut oil you get from the grocery store in the baking aisle. It may seem odd at first but your teeth will stay smooth and clean all day. Been doing this for many years.
@@myknicI think the general advice is to change your toothpaste into a milder one. Mint is usually an irritant. For me it's sodium laureate sulfate which also made my inner lining inside my mouth peel. Sensodyne is the only tooth paste I can use safely. 😢
Does anyone remember Bonnie bell lip smackers used as a young girl ? They were fragranced waxy colored flavored pretty packaged stick lip balms that likely started a lip balm addiction in early grade school 😮 marketing our youth develops lip balm lifer's 😉
The main thing is after you brush your teeth, apply Vaseline or aquaphor immediately after...soft, moist lips after. Apply as needed throughout the day ❤
Simple Propolis balm/salve from your pharmacy could help you (if they have it). Mine also has some marigold in it. For me nothing else worked, different balms, vaseline, nothing.
Before I used to think that the Vaseline lip therapy was an okay product when I was younger but after buying it again because my lips kept on getting chapped and dehydrated this fella saved my lips! I also gotten a lip mask and I used it first but all it did was just made my lips worse. It was just extremely flakey. So after awhile of using Vaseline and drinking enough water everyday, my lips has never been better! I reccomend putting vaseline overnight because my lips always feel soft hydrated when I wake up in the morning :> And yes I know this sounds like the most common solution to healing chapped lips but just drinking enough water really, REALLY helps a shitton. Putting Vaseline only and not drinking enough water won't save those chapped lips enough.
Same here. I noticed mine got a lot worse after my hormones got all out of whack and especially made my estrogen levels low. Even years later, my lips haven’t been the same since. So I’m sure the hormone aspect plays a part in it as well.
Low vitamin D can cause dry lips, when I started talking supplement my lips didn’t needed constant lip balm. If you have vit D deficiency taking 1000 IU may not help at all.
Dry skin, lips, and nails are also often a sign of hypothyroidism. Maybe on your next appt with your doc, ask for a full hormone panel to check if your T3 and T4 levels are normal (within range) or off balance. Good luck! 👍
Lip allergies can also be from toothpaste. Tretinoin can cause lip dryness and chapping too. Also nutritional deficiencies for example B vitamins. There may be a fungal issue too. Also can stem from various other causes such as... Eczema Lichen planus Lupus erythematosus Autoimmune bullous diseases Crohn’s disease Sarcoidosis Certain nutritional deficiencies Mouth breathers often suffer with dry lips, try mouth taping. Staying hydrated, using vaseline and not mouth breathing (especially at night,) should help most people. For those whom it doesnt look into any allergies, nutritional deficiencies or underlying health conditions.
Vaseline does not work for me. At least, not used alone. I finally found relief by using MEDICATED Blistex, then Vaseline on top. I found that the Vaseline locks the Blistex in for longer and I get relief and healing. It’s the only thing I’ve found that works for me.
If its around the mouth then it's likely eczema/dermatitis but could be fungal too. My daughter had a patch of eczema that wouldn't react like other patches elsewhere. When they swapped the plain hydrocortisone for one with an antifungal in it went.
I didn’t know I’m allergic or sensitive to EOS lip balms. Actually most solid lip balms even aquaphor that’s in lipstick form. I thought that I wasn’t using enough and would put more. My lips was so dry. I actually would have a line of thickened dry skin and red line on my top lip. It would bleed. I now only use the gel tube versions of lip balms.
I like to use aloe gel from the bottle first, let that soak in for 5-10 mins then I wipe it off and put a thick layer of Cereve healing ointment cus it had ceramide’s and hyaluronic acid
Get your gut checked. I’m histamine intolerant now and I believe my lips were the warning sign. Dry painful lips everyday now. I can’t eat food and I’m down to 98 pounds. The lips are the window into the gut. I have an appointment with gastroenterologist in feb and hopefully after years of being told it’s anxiety I’ll actually get some real help.
My problem isn't my lips being dry or chapped. It's the problem of constantly peeling, because most lip products feel good for some time, but then start to form hard casts, that I peel and then causes me to bleed. This includes vaseline. I just want a lip product that moistures for a few hours and then absorbs completely without the hard cast.
Mine requires also my full attention. I got the idea on an RU-vid, to copy my face skin care routine on my face. It means exfoliate regulary, not with sugar but an acide, then seal it with vaseline. I also use vaseline, at night, or when I have to go outside in the fall or winter. And I tried some moisturizing serum on my lips as well. Keeping in mind the ones that works well and "save" it for emergency. And right now I'm trying an micellar water/oil cleanser. And of course I have an inclusive list of balm lips, chapped ones not included
Yep.. EOS destroyed my lips. Threw off the moisture balance and it spread to an infection around my mouth. I learned any lip balm with beeswax is a NO for me.
I have the same problem. Reading comments from others here… I am taking supplements, been on a health kick for few years now. My bloods were checked etc. I just feel like vesline just doesn’t work for me. That’s the reason why for the last few years I only try it for one day and than go back to limp balm.
Yeap, always had flaky lips untill I started using vaseline. At night ill put a moisturizing cream under the vaseline as well for extra hydration, they feel great the day after
But vaseline doesn't have spf! I'm running into issues where seemingly anything that isnt Vaseline will give me perma-chapped lips but I really want spf lip balm!
I remembered using “baby lips” the brand all the time when I was 12 until I noticed a few months later that they were messing up my lips in general for the worse! Those lip balms cracked the sides of my lips extremely bad making them bleed, swollen, and painful! The damage done, it was too late and for years I’ve slowly trying to heel the wrinkled cracked side parts of my mouth ☹️🥲 So y’all chose your chapstick wisely, no fragrance, less ingredients, definitely use Vaseline!
For me it's always avobenzone in spf lip balms, it is true the allergy doesn't show up immediately, and upon suspending doesn't get back to normal immediately either. Very difficult to pinpoint, I'm so glad I found my culprit 😅
@@alexngreta if avobezone in a lip balm is causing your allergy, I would look for mineral or avobenzone free lip balm options. Sun bum has one but it's Hard to get by where I live, so I usually use my face spf on my lips, which is avobenzone free as well, my favourite are Holika Holika soothing essence waterproof spf50, beauty of joseon spf50, and European sunscreen like avene intense protect or cetaphil sunscreen for kids. If you don't like the feeling of face sunscreen on your lips, because it can be drying, add a layer of vaseline on top or look for a lip balm that doesn't contain the irritating ingredient.
Hello Dr Dray! When you said that contact allergies don’t happen as soon as you put on a lipstick,it reminded me something. I used to use fragranced skincare products and although not having any actives included in my routine recently, over time i started developing cystic acne that felt absolutely swollen underneath the skin. I figured that it could be my fragrance allergy and after not using the said products my cystic acne cleared within 2 weeks. I was prescribed with antibiotics for much less severe and inflamed acnes before that so i knpw it was bad. Is it possible that was contat allgery as well? And do i also have to be cautious with body creams? Thank you!
Vaseline was the cause for my dry chapped lips. I stopped using it and within a week, my lips had improved. They got a bit worse in the first couple days but then came right. Now I use nothing because I don't need to. No more dry chapped lips.❤
I do remember my lips burning with Aquaphor but it was so expensive that I just pushed through, I keep using it even though it seems I'm sensitive to beewax 😅
My dry cracked lips won't heal either but it's because I don't really do anything about it 😂 I just suffer until winter is over Surprisingly, I haven't had them this year yet though. And this is the year I started using Vaseline on my face before bed
My chapped lips are due to my acne treatment with spironolactone and contraceptive pills. They helped me a lot with the acne and the oiliness, but my lips and eyelids that are naturally dry, now are like the sahara desert. My lips are cracked and I can't smile whatsoever or they crack more :(
I have had best results from beeswax balm. I use vaseline to my arms and feet after shower to lock moisture, and on my face some nights. I also get relief from cracked heels using glycolic acid and putting Vaseline + socks. Now my feet won't take carpets with them when I walk aroud 💀
Unfortunately for me, even that plain Vaseline made my lips dry and crack constantly. So I would use more not realising that it was the cause. I watched this video ages ago. I decide to stop using the Vaseline on my lips and after about a week, my lips have stopped cracking and getting dry. Sorry Dr Dray but your advice on this one thing wasn't good for me. I love your channel tho ❤
Not related to this video but can you please do one on nails please. Mine are brittle and split all the time. The split goes from the tip towards the cuticle. I am in NZ, so might not get all products but can you please help ? Thank you soooooo much, my nails are an embarrassment 😢
Elizabeth Arden lipfix lotion worked wonders to soothe and heal lip skin barrier and return to normal....not sure if its still around? Holy Grail 5 star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Avoid most lipstick, glosses and lip stains specifically 💥💣 the alcohol is highly drying leaving lips dry and parched like the Sahara desert, sad but true 😮 So many chemicals in commercially manufactured lip products and you'd be surprised to learn of the high lead content in lipstick especially the reds 😮 Avoid common lip balm culprits like lanolin, castor oil and especually menthol which can cause excessively dry, splitting and peeling lips. Petrolatum products can cause rebound lip dryness. Drink more water with electrolytes to help stay hydrated And focus on reparing and restoring natural lip barrier to normal without needing daily lip product ~ try putting organic honey on lips before bed to normalize moisture barrier, its a natural humectant and absorbs into the lips leaving them healed after a week or so. Applying during the day speeds up the process and your lips will be healthy and healed. Try using natural lip balm if needed with Shea butter, coco butter, olive oil, avocado oil, almond oil 💋 Research the ingredients and through trial and error you'll find what works for you 💙
No all winter starting @ thanksgiving through to April the line of my lip where it meets skin becomes inflamed , nothing helps it ! Docs have no treatment for this
I don’t get much in the way of chapped lips, it’s the skin around my lips that gets chapped (or maybe it would be better to say it’s almost like what happens when people lick their lips a lot and the skin around the lips gets red and irritated? But without any discernible cause.) It’s been that way my whole life, and apparently isn’t too uncommon in my family. It’s weird but I just use a menthol chapstick on the skin around my lips instead of my lips for relief from that burning sensation.
That burning sensation makes me think of perioral dermatitis. Dr. Dray probably has a video on it, she has perioral dermatitis herself, maybe check that out. Menthol is definitely not a good idea in any skin condition, very irritating. In the case of perioral dermatitis or allergy it might be the actual cause of the condition. If that cooling sensation is a must maybe just put your vaseline (or the above mentioned LRP Cicaplast) in the fridge or even freezer?
My dermatologists ruled out any potential condition causing it, and said the chapstick I was applying was fine if it’s giving me relief, as it does not seem to be making things worse. As I said, it’s just a weird thing that I have dealt with my whole life, and have some other family members with the same thing. There’s no scabbing or peeling or blistering or dryness or swelling, just some redness that is pretty identical to what happens when people lick their lips a lot but without clear cause. The chapstick I use helps reduce the redness and the discomfort, so all in all I am not overly fussed about it. Just a weird thing.
Don't use ANYTHING and wait until your skin adjusts. Yes, it takes some time, lips might be chapped and even bleed, stay strong. NO PRODUCTS! It's what I did many years ago, now my lips always look nice and soft. And I live in a northern country with pretty cold winters (-30 C/-22 F). Remember, we are born into this world perfect, without any chapstick in our hand.
lol I’m glad that method works for you, but I’m sorry - we are definitely not born into this world perfect. Infants are born with defects all the time, not to mention the fact that if a mom is chronically stressed, anxious or depressed while pregnant, her child is at increased risk for having a range of problems, including emotional problems, ADHD, conduct disorder and impaired cognitive development.
I’ve been doing this since July. It’s not this way for me. My gut is the problem, and until my gut is healed my lips will not heal. Also hormone imbalance. I’m going to see specialists soon for these problems.
None of those sticks work for me. As soon as i run it even the soft ones it automatically scrapes my lips. It feels like and papers. I will try omg the way it's made i need it get over it i guess
