Great explanations of the water and awesome fishing :) excited to fish some of the waters in CO with my gf at the end of this month! Thanks & best wishes from Cali ❤
@Kevin Branigan Kevin glad to meet you today. Thanks for checking out the videos today and I hope you enjoy our high lakes adventures. Check out the “2 Minute Takes” if you wouldn’t mind and give me some feedback Kevin. Much appreciated sir!
@Jim Tanner Jim, that spot is the pull-off just after Sheep Lakes on the left side. You can park there, and I’d suggest walking downstream at least a few hundred yards and working upstream. The water all there is so great
Just Googled it on the map i have driven by it many times i will be fishing it this time and I would have missed without your direction thanks for the info
Really cool video. Just started watching them as I am heading to Estes and steamboat in middle of July and looking to fish some small streams and other places within RMNP. What kind of boots do you recommend that would be a good combo for getting wet and hiking? Any info would be appreciated. Wool socks in assuming also.
Hey thanks Matthew. If you’re wet wading, I’d say a good pair of Simms, Orvis or Korkers wet wading boots is great. I have the Simms kind for years. My wife just got the new Korkers and they have removable soles and they’re sweet. One rubber traction and one felt. Check the regs for the park as they may not allow felt soles in there. And yes, wool socks like a mid weight or light weight is great for keeping warm feet while wet.
Great video! Beautiful fish! I just got back from rmnp and believe I may have caught a greenback cutthroat. I was wondering if there would be any way I could send the photo to you to identify it.
@Master Bassin Please do! My email: mattfugazzi@yahoo.com Look forward to seeing it. Also, which lake or stream and section you caught it from would help
Hi Matt. Coming to Estes Park in two weeks and want to fly fish. I could bring my 9' 5wt or my 7.5' 3/4 wt. The fishing on the Fall River makes me think the shorter lighter rod would be best, but I don't know what other bodies of water are like there. Suggestions?
Dave, I’d definitely call Kirk’s Fly Shop right there in the town of Estes Park. We’ve just pulled out of record drought situation in most of our counties because of super high snow and rain fall. In fact, this year we’ve already passed the total precipitation for all of 2020, which is a good thing. But not for your fishing trip in two weeks unfortunately! I’d definitely say bring that 3/4 wt for Fall River (if it’s not blown out from runofff). I’d stay in the Big T (Thompsom) since it’s a Tailwater. Lake Estes itself could be good too depending on how full it will get over the next couple weeks as well. The guys at Kirk’s know the area very well and will steer you in the right direction. RMNP as of today is still under 58” of snow. BUT, if you have an inclination, check with the rangers sometime before you leave and see whether or not you might be able to fish Morraine Park or upper Fall River that runs from the Fern Lake trailhead. That spot right at the trailhead parking lot has BIG browns, some Brookies and a very few Cutthroats! If you need more info, feel free to shoot me a text: 303-523-6333. Cheers, Matt
Yessir. Have to in RMNP but not everywhere else though. Many times I’ll pinch my barbs down but leave them for my wife if we’re on the north Platte or somewhere like that
irbobable It’s actually a purple fly rod; I searched ALL over for this rod for my wife. It’s a 5wt Wright & McGill S-Curve “Fly Girl.” It’s beautiful and has a great feel to it.
@Jeremy Sierro Hey Jeremy, thanks for noticing the details! I am a Casio GShock enthusiast and have a small collection. I particularly like the ones that are rare/rarer, especially the collaborations. This one is Gshock Burton (snowboards) collab with altimeter, barometer, temp and supposed to geared more towards cold conditions.
