Sand blasting without the mess? Yes indeed! We made a DIY dry ice blasting machine that uses solid CO2 (Dry Ice) instead of sand. Dry ice turns into pure atmosphere, so the mess we make on our carpets at home will simply disappear. After cleaning paint off surfaces though, we realized that we either need a higher pressure compressor or larger dry ice pellets, otherwise the process takes way too long.

Sand blasters use high horsepower compressors for a lot of air pressure. It is a very energy intensive process. I also thought the dry ice blasters make the dry ice from compressed CO2 kind of at the nozzle.

They don't. I've used industrial dry ice blasters and they do indeed use pellets.

Dry Ice blasters seem to be priced in the $3k and up range so upping the budget to create a more effective machine would have value. An auger feed from the chamber and determining a similar means to create the optimal size pellets will go a long way to producing a useful tool

Thanks Ric, we won’t be putting more time into this project and we’re really hoping it would work, but I do agree with all your suggestions. Cheers

I have used similar models of those sand guns. I imagine part of your problem was the feed orifice was extremely small and was getting clogged. If you had a larger hole and possibly a rotating agitator disc over it to shuffle the ice, you should get much better throughput. Alternatively, mounting a small ice crusher on top of the gun to make pellets on the go.

The blaster from Amazon. It was cheaper than building our own.

hmm - Need to try this with pellets and more air pressure.

Yeah I believe you are correct. We probably won’t be trying this again but at least anyone who wants to has a project to work off of 😅. Thanks for your comment. Cheers

Can I use a sandblaster for dry ice blasting? (Performance Tool M549 Portable Abrasive Blaster Kit)

Can you do something simpler for the next video please? Something like an 8 axis CNC+3D Printer + Plasma Cutter for under 100 dollars please

You guys should build one of those laser cleaners. It's in the spirit of this project, but is much more achievable while still being very "cool". :D

I like the idea. We have experience with lasers and I am familiar with the concept of the technology so we may give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion 😊

another great vidio lads really like the concept of this .it would help me alot in taking sound deading from car floors 😁 just on the pellet side what about if ye crush the ice and then us a compact mold male and female put it in a vice to form the desired pillets 😁 our a plastic bag and hammer 😂 a idea for a future vidio for ye to try is vaccum forming machine thats semi auto that would be a fun project that most hobbiest could tackle 😁 keep up the great work ye do make my day when ye post new projects 😁

I didn't hear you say anything about working with this in a well ventilated area. You don't want people dying in their garages.
@ActionBOX
@ActionBOX 2 года назад
Dry ice turns into CO2, and it does so very slowly. It would take a huge amount of stored dry ice to have a fast effect on the CO2 concentration in the garage (or more accurately, the partial pressure of CO2). Furthermore, your body’s primary stimuli when breathing is to detect high CO2 (not a lack of oxygen, fun fact 😃) so at dangerous levels of co2 in the room you would feel the same as you do when holding your breath for a long time, and you will have that amount of time to respond. Hence, I would not consider a 10lb block like the one we used to be dangerous for pulmonary gas exchange in any way when used in a conventional home garage. Thank you for your comment regardless, Cheers.

It'd be cool to see if you could utilize the pressure buildup of the dry ice evaporating instead of an air compressor.
