What a great video. I been diving since I was 13 I'm 54 now. My dad and grandfather both dove almost to 80 years old. They told me horror stories of the gum rubber suits they would use. You would come out of the water with pinch marks all over:( They also used enter tubes as bc's before the Fenzi's BC's came out. The Fenzi was ahead of its time. It had a built in bottle to inflate the BC and was a bailout when the need arised.

And it's worse in the spring! I have made thousands of dives in Toby, and the other Great Lakes too, and I use a dry suit - when necessary. I still prefer a wetsuit if possible with comfort and safety in mind. It's simply a more inspiring way to dive. Take care. Alec

Well depending on how cold, wool or warm pyjamas could do. Anything below 60 F and good insulated garments are needed for long or repetitive dives. Enjoy Michael.

I can't believe it. It's FINALLY here ! that Kevin guy... :) Crushed Neoprene Bare suit can be closer to 2mm I think. Also there are so many fabric kinds (I have 2 very different ones) - you forgot to mention one downside is they don't stretch (well my Bare SB (Stretch Breathable) system does, but then it leaks as it's delaminating now) so you need extra material and sometimes crouch strap so they feel a bit more like wearing a garbage bag (arms are 2x the diameter needed) vs more form fitting suit that stretch. But then you can easily layer fleece as needed (I dive same Bare Nex gen in 45-65 deg water, just change the layers) and it dries instantly (vs neoprene). Maybe a closer comparison would be a 2mm compressed neoprene (ex Bare XCS2) vs a laminate (ex: Bare Nex Gen, or TRILAM TECH DRY) and say why would can be better than the other ? Also soft socks (much easier to fit different sizes, easy to reverse to dry, just need slip on if you intend to walk much else just fit in your fins) vs boots. Can't wait to see what you have next.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 6 лет назад
Right. Generally a fabric suit (non-neoprene) does not stretch and looks like the divers is encased in a garbage bag. That extra space is needed so the diver can move around, raise his arms, bend over, etc. If you Bare SB is failing, it may be an early model. It had problems early on and was actually removed from the market for a while. Many of the problem suits were replaced by Bare at no charge to the diver. Check that out. I'm pretty sure the current version has proven excellent. I used an SB on a dive trip to Alaska and was very pleased with it. It is essentially a lightweight fabric suit that's form fitting. Take care Alain. Alec
@alaind831
@alaind831 6 лет назад
yeah I need to contact Bare as I absolutely love the SB form fitting but lightweight stretch, but on my last boat trip I had stagnant water in both feet after 5 dives and the seals are ok. Even after 1 dive the inside feel much more damp overall than my much dryer Bare Nex Gen which I bought as a replacement for now. Read Bare warrantee isn't what it used to be (lifetime on seams) once they got bought out by Huish Outdoors and they stop replacing defective SB suits - which they no longer make (I don't even see a replacement that stretch). Unfortunately my local Bare shop closed when the owner passed away (still diving strong in his 70s in our cold waters here). Will have to contact them and see... :(

Idk, but my opinion is that you sould buy neoprene dry suit only if you cant afford fabric one. I mean, sure it's more easy to repair neoprene suit, but it's also much easier to damage it. So, easier but much more often repair, is it really a con?

Alec, thanks again for an amazing video... I've seen this one at least 10 times. Then I went to order my made to measure Drysuit from a small manufacturer in north of England (Otter), and then I got asked a dozen more questions that I didn't know what to answer... where do you want your pockets, on the side, on the front, half way in between (opted for that). Do you want velcro or zipper pockets (... got one of each :P wasn't sure which was better). many many other questions...
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
It sounds like you're working with a good store. They ask lots of questions before they order your suit. Most pockets are on the thigh (upper leg) and slightly off center. That's the easiest place to reach them. Good idea on the pocket design - the Velcro is easy to use; the zipper is secure. You didn't mention a PEE valve. If you opt for one, make sure it's on the front!! LOL. Good luck and have fun. Alec

Alec, thank you for replying so quickly. I thought about that but the length, and chest dimensions are really close. But the lengths change by 2". I plan on having L.J's. I'm 57 years young I to am experiencing mussel loss but I still want to play! Will the extra length hurt my proper fit? My choice for the dry suit would be the ScubaPro's newest. I wish that your shop was here! Not to much scuba in this area. It's a lot of money and I need to get this right. Thank you again for responding to my stupid questions. Have a great day.

A bit of extra length is much preferable than too short. Extra leg length or even body length disappears underwater. Be sure to get suspenders and shorten them to pull the legs well up into your crotch. 57?? Just a kid! Go crazy. Get a suit and have fun. Where are you located? Alec

Hello Alec, This will be my first scuba suit of any kind. I will be buying a dry suit for sure. I live in Colorado and the river water is very cold year round. I will be using it mostly for snipping gold in the the river beds. How much room is left inside the suit for long johns. The sizing charts show S-XXL. But they don't ask if you have over sized body parts ie. stomach, butt, thighs etc. If you can't try it on before you buy it, what other options do you have? I have been watching your videos and they have helped a bunch. Thank you.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
Most dry suit manufacturers have a size chart. Check and you will see suggested measurements for height, weight, leg length, waist, chest, hips, etc. Get one that is close or bigger. The size charts normally make allowance for some underwear so don't try to make it extra big to accommodate the underwear - it will be way too big! If you are diving for gold in river beds you may never be too deep and don't really need a true scuba dry suit with the valves. You can get by with a surfing dry suit. They are very similar but don't have the inflate/deflate valves that a scuba diver needs. And they are a lot cheaper. I'd say that if you are not going deeper than 10 - 15', you don't need valves. So look for a dry suit at a windsurfing or surfing store. Use a safety line for the first few dives at least (if not all the time depending on the current!). While gold diving you usually have a solid bottom and are on it and not too deep. Good luck. Alec

Some brands do made-to-measure, others only stock sizes and others something in between. I went with the third option. I recently ordered a Santi drysuit and picked a brand that had a reseller nearby. They measured me at something like 26 points to find out which stock size would be the closest fit. Then, since Santi includes free adjustment of up to 4 things the reseller advised me where I could lose an inch and where I should have a bit added. Getting it done in a store was a great experience since they gave plenty of advice, which I needed as this was my first suit. It'll take two months to be made, which is a downside of this method but I'm convinced the fit will be very good. Made-to-measure is even nicer but the most expensive option. Stock sizes are cheapest and some brands have enough size options that there may be something that'll fit you fine.

i'm a bit late to the party Alec but i think your excellent summary missed one very important difference . Neoprene suits ( standard and compressed ) have stretch and shell/fabric suits don't stretch. This makes a huge difference in comfort , from sitting down to getting in and out of the boat to reaching back over your shoulder to shut down a valve, everything is easier and more comfortable in a neoprene suits Ian
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
You are right and that's the main reason I prefer neoprene. Also, they have inherent warmth meaning that you can wear a neoprene suit without any underwear and stay warm, if the water isn't too cold. The single biggest downside to neoprene suits is the buoyancy that could require you to carry an uncomfortable amount of weight. But the newest neoprene suits, the crushed styles that are only 3 or 5 mm in thickness, are much better and probably no more buoyant than a wetsuit. Alec

Hey Alec, Curious how compressing a material makes it lighter? - You said the compressed/crushed neoprene is a 7mm compacted to a 4mm thickness. The statement that it is lighter seems impossible unless it isn't just compressed but another material completely.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

It does seem to be a contradiction Seth. It could be just an impression that is influenced by the thinner material and increased flexibility but it sure feels lighter. I've not actually weighed them. Alec

Alec, can you go into details about semi-dry suits? I have often thought of using that instead of a drysuit. Thanks!
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
To the best of my knowledge, semi-dry wetsuits were the creation of Frank White Sr. of Victoria, BC. Franks was a very innovative developer of many wetsuit features that still appear occasionally as "New" ideas in modern suits - rubber wrist seals, cross-chest zippers, Farmer John pants, rubber neck seals and more, were all from his fertile mind. He was dedicated to helping divers keep warm in the cold British Columbia water. I sold and used his semi-dry suits for many years. I'll see if I can find one and do a video on it for sure. Alec
@timgosling6189
@timgosling6189 5 лет назад
I have a 6mm semi-dry for diving in the Med etc. It's basically a wet suit but with much better sealing. They frequently have an additional neck collar and the idea is to cut flushing to a minimum and keep that water your body has warmed up inside the suit as much as possible. For the same cold protection, a semi-dry can therefore be used instead of say wearing both a 5mm wet suit and a shortie over the top. You are therefore keeping buoyancy to a minimum also. As usual, getting a good close fit is the key thing.

@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

Generally, I stick with an idea that applies to all products and all divers. I don't like to mention brand names if it's not really relevant. I dislike being accused as a "brand" supporter as has already happened. Some name brands are simply a better choice and they may get more attention or be mentioned more frequently for that reason. However, there is very little difference between most similar products regardless of the brand. Scuba gear, like automobiles, televisions and mobile phones, are all similar in most respects and most give good service. However, if the brand name is of value, I will mention it in the future. Alec

1more disadvantage for neoprene drysuits, as you dive deeper, the insulation gets worse and you get way to heavy as the neoprene gets compressed.

Thank you, and Kevin, so much for producing this series! Just got a drysuit (fabric) and your sage advice will prove to be timely...especially looking forward to your advice on dry suit inflation, and buoyancy control. Standing by to stand by for more
@AudioPhil84
@AudioPhil84 6 лет назад
Dragomir Ronilac the isolation you wear inside the suit will stay the same, as you regulary inflate it with gas as you go deeper, so the buoyancy and the isolation is not so much affected. I personally switched from neoprene drysuit to a dui350 as i advanced below 30m, as i felt like a rock on down there.
@alaind831
@alaind831 6 лет назад
yeah uncompressed 7mm drysuit have all the disadvantage of wetsuit when it comes to buoyancy - need ton of weight at the top, and loose the insulation as you go deeper and start sinking. Not sure why Alec spent that much time on those as they are rarely seen (other than old used ones). Compressed Neoprene (at least the 2mm version) mostly solve that, but they are heavy vs fabric. With fabric your fleece is your insulation and as you go down you ad air inside to stay buoyant which keeps the insulation constant thickness so you keep your warmth - game changer.

@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
If you get a lightweight drysuit, you can probably use less weight. By lightweight I mean one with no neoprene. It's the neoprene that makes you buoyant. There are lots of fabric or shell suits or laminate suits like this on the market. The suit does not provide any insulation. It just keeps you dry. You wear cozy underwear to keep warm. Less neoprene = less weight. You should be able to get by with 1/2 the weight you're using now. Plus it's easier to don and doff and more flexible than a semi-dry. Check out the BARE Trilam Tech Dry or Aqua-Trek Tech Dry or something like that. Good luck. Alec

When you dive with a drysuit, do you always need to dive with tanks? Suppose I wanted to dive in shallow water just off the coast in 10 feet of water. If I had a drysuit would I need to use tanks with the dry suit?

@traydog1257
@traydog1257 3 года назад

@seikibrian8641
@seikibrian8641 2 года назад
"Suppose I wanted to dive in shallow water just off the coast in 10 feet of water." That would be a good time to use a thick wet suit, especially one of the "semi-dry" types. With a dry suit you need to be able to add air as you descend in order to maintain insulation, although if you have a neoprene-foam dry suit it might provide enough insulation even without adding air as long as you don't go too deep.

Why are there no hoods attached? I understand there is some body heat that is lost thru a divers head.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 6 лет назад
True Ralph, dry suits don't have attached hoods as they stop at the neck seal. There purpose is to keep the core body dry and warm. There are many hood options to pick from so it is up to the each dry suit diver to pick what is comfortable (hair or no hair) and appropriate for each dive profile. Thanks for asking. Take care. Alec
@jordynchan5103
@jordynchan5103 6 лет назад
I've heard drysuits with attached latex hoods that keep your head dry, but they are pretty rare and you still have to wear a wet hood on top of it because it doesn't help retain heat.
@KimonFrousios
@KimonFrousios 5 лет назад
Hoods leave only the face exposed. So an attatched hood blocks access to the neck seal. You need access to the seal to stretch it to get in or out and to roll it so it actually seals. So drysuit divers use independent hoods instead.

If I want to dive with a dry suit. Do I need a PADI certification for dry suit diving?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
Nope. But it's a good idea. Diving in a drysuit does require some special skills and practice as well to get it right. Get it wrong and it could be disastrous. Some dive operations require a course before they will accept you on their drysuit dives. That's how important it is. I think taking the course is a great idea. Plus you get another C Card. @elmo319
@elmo319 4 года назад
Only a fool uses diving equipment without proper training, which is why they offer a dry suit speciality course. Dry suits affect your buoyancy as they are another air space so you need to know how to control them when descending and ascending in addition to other topics such as dry suit squeeze, carotid sinus reflex, donning and maintaining them. The course also explains the different types and variations in a similar fashion to this video but in greater depth. Dive safely within your limits and ALWAYS take proper training with any new equipment and/or type of diving.

HaHa. I'm old and my bladder control is not what it once was. On a fairly recent dive trip to Alaska, I wore a diaper - DON't YOU DARE LAUGH!! You will all be old one day!!!! Turns out I didn't need it. My drysuit stayed dry and clean smelling. Take care. Alec
