Age related macular degeneration is a major cause of blindness and since February is Macular Degeneration awareness month, I wanted to share some information about it.
Age related macular degeneration or “AMD” or “ARMD” is an eye disease that affects the retina in the back of the eye. It is where the area of the retina that is most responsible for critical, high definition vision, called the macula, begins to degenerate.
As the name implies, age-related macular degeneration is “age related” and chances of developing the disease increases from the age of about 50+.
There are two forms of the disease. There is Wet age related macular degeneration and there is dry age related macular degeneration.
Dry macular degeneration is often characterized by the presence of small protein growths within the retina called drusen. As drusen builds up, the retina begins to atrophy and form what is called geographic atrophy. People with dry AMD often experience blurred vision and even loss of central vision in the end stage of the disease.
Vision loss from wet macular degeneration is usually more severe and occurs more rapidly than the dry form. Wet macular degeneration is when new blood vessels from the choroid (a thin meshwork of blood vessels and tissue behind the retina) grow into the retina and leak blood and fluid. This leakage of fluid causes swelling and distortion to the retina and can lead to permanent vision loss.

2. Blurred Vision
3. Distorted Vision
4. Loss of vision
⚡ Few quick tips to reduce your chances of getting ARMD ⚡
1. Eating healthy diets rich in green leafy vegetables and consuming oily fish twice a week has shown in studies to reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
2. Eye vitamin supplements have shown to reduce the advancement of the disease for people with intermediate or advanced stages of the disease. *best ask your doctor if they recommend these for you.

3. Don’t Smoke. Cigarette smoking is strongly associated with increased risk of AMD

I'm currently going through a degeneration in my eyes right now, it started at age 18 and through many Lasik procedures, my retina specialist was able to somewhat keep my retina in tact.. I have something known as Sticklers Syndrome and it caused many problems to occur with my eyes. Mainly my right eye at the moment. For the past 2 years, I've been seeing, what I describe as, a jellyfish/plastic bag-like figure floating around in my eye constantly. I can see through it but I know it's mostly my left eye straining itself to have sight.. I was told I'd eventually have to get this weird buckle surgery to keep my eyes into place, though if I'm being honest, once my amazing retina specialist retired, I haven't visited or really talked to the new one that I was assigned to, mainly because of the fact that my old specialist knew everything about Sticklers, and my new one knows remotely nothing and hasn't made any effort to help me with my situation... not fun.. hoping to get in contact with someone else who can help.. I know its only a matter of time before the Lasik stops holding my retina in place and I'll be at risk of going blind yet again.

I have early onset dry AMD at 29. I went for a regular eye test, she saw some discolouration. She sent me to an a specialist, and that specialist sent me to a retinal specialist. I have to test my eyes daily. Right now my glasses do help correct my vision, but without my glasses if I look in the mirror, I have a black spot where my nose is haha it scared me at first! It is scary thought, but I just keep doing research and learning more. You explained a lot more than my retinal specialist did. I didn't really get much info from anyone I saw. I learnt a lot of it on my own

Eye health is so important. My mom has been getting shots for so long. I can see where I’m headed. With her most recent shot she got a horrible infection and was on so many medications to fight that infection. She almost went blind. Here in the Midwest, the clinic is completely overwhelmed with patients needing shots for various eye diseases. The optometrist doctors/surgeons are in high demand.

@mathisnotforthefaintofheart
@mathisnotforthefaintofheart 2 года назад
Before you go into supplements, please first get a proper eye exam (with the Optomap so that the doc can see the back of your eyes). AREDS is typically for people who have (stage 1) AMD. If you don't have that, then a general supplement called Ocuvit (Bausch & Lomb) would be a better choice

Excellent video Doc. Really packed with information. I have fairy advanced macular degeneration inherited from my father (Mine came on much earlier and more aggressively)- in fact, the retinal specialist at UCSF(who gets an award for bedside manners bounced into my room after looking at the photos of my eyes and exclaimed 'you have the most advanced macular degeration I have ever seen in such a young man! - I was 59). I am now 64 and use a 4k monitor, a bright yellow keyboard but have massive blind spots. i am looking into an amazing headset called nu eyes e2 plus that is their middle model but works best for and flk. I have not purchased yet 9working on financing- but it is not like those $10k devices so its possible), it seem to remove the blind spots- I have no idea how...maybe it is the 3D technology that is using 9appealing0 to the whole eye? But it is a game changer for me- I could see the SF skyline for the first time ungarbled and watch a movie on our big screen. I will be writing about this in the coming weeks if anyone is interested or if you are. But I am looking at ALL available technologies now.

Just when I turned 40, I was diagnosed with dry AMD. Yay! Happy birthday to me! I don't have anyone in my family with AMD. I'm not a smoker, I eat healthy and exercise every day. My eye specialist didn't educate me about AMD. She only said " There's nothing I can do" but "Can you come back tomorrow so I can show my colleague the pit you have in your right eye?" LOL. Are you kidding me? I have a rare pit in my right eye and because it's rare, the eye doctors go crazy about it. Years ago, my eye doctor asked me if I could go to the University she teaches to show her students the pit in my eye. I agreed. Her students were all over my eye. I felt like I was a guinea pig. So no more. Anyway, I'm kind of frustrated because my eye doctor didn't care to help me. Because my eye dr specialist didn't explain to me that I could lose my central vision, I forgot that I have AMD. A couple of weeks ago, all the sudden I remembered that I have AMD then I decided to find out more about it, I discovered that I can go blind. I feel hopeless, sad and worried about my future. I've been eating healthier than ever to get the vitamins that are good for my condition. I have an appointment with my eye doctor to ask all the questions I have about AMD. I don't want to take AREDS. I'm on MIND diet. Can you do a video about whole foods that can help to slow down dry AMD? And recommended dosage/portion daily? Thank you Doc. for a very informative video.

AREDS2, leafy green vegetables, UV protection for you eyes; these are your treatment options for dry. Use your amsler grid routinely at home. If you develop wet, you'll likely need anti VEGF injections from a retinal specialist. See your optometrist regularly for follow ups, and don't spend time worrying about the things you can't change.

I’m 50 and have wet AMD. I noticed that door frames etc started to appear bowed, so I went to see an ophthalmologist who diagnosed wet AMD. It started all of a sudden, with me first noticing my eye felt as though it was being pressed. I went for my 3rd injection today and the surgeon said the edema has reduced again compared to the second visit. My vision is still wavy, and I can read 2 lines larger than my other eye on a sight test chart. The injection is uncomfortable, in fact today’s was very painful. I think perhaps the local anaesthetic drops didn’t have enough time to be fully effective before the injection. Still, I’ll bare the pain if it saves me from losing my vision as I am a web developer and sight loss would also mean job loss.

I stumbled across the video today. A few years ago my doctor let me know I had drusen in both of my eyes. He showed me on my eye scan (not sure of the correct term) that the edges of my retina were "blurry". Being the curious person I am I turned to Google to find out what drusen were. I knew it was related to MD but wasn't shown how that connection was and how it worked. I am pretty sure this is what my Memere (grandmother) had. The drusen were found when I was 47. I am 50 now and so far nothing has happened with my vision. I go to my eye doctor every 6 months (regular check-up and an extended appointment for the drusen). Thank you for your great videos. I am waiting for a consultation but based on a 3D scan by my optician she says I have a macular hole rather than AMD (I’m 62). I’d love to see a video on macular holes vs AMD - presumably wet AMD since the symptoms you describe are what I see and my scan looks to my untrained eye very similar to the wet AMD scan you showed which is worrying since my optician said that a hole can be repaired in many cases whereas wet AMD can’t. It would be really interesting to hear about the similarities and differences between the conditions, how to tell them apart, treatment options (or lack there of) etc.

Very informative. Such a nice contrast to the many claimed "cures" out there. One small note: my understanding is that anyone with we md will also have dry, even if it's negligible. I have both, both advance. Drusen was observed in my eyes when I was 27. I had a major bleed in one eye at 48, losing over half of my central vision for a while. I've had over y0 injections at this point and the first ones almost completely restored the lost vision from that episode. The dry, of course, continues to progress and I have extensive geographic atrophy in both eyes and am legally blind. I used to teach speed reading, which is sort of humorous if you have my bent sense of humor. The commercials that Henry Winkler is doing hide it but are actually sponsored by the pharmaceutical company that has developed a treatment for geographic atrophy (but probably not the genetic type I have and having about an 8% chance of causing vasculitis. Thanks again.

I have age related macular degeneration a wet version. I was diagnosed when I was in my 50s and I am 66 now. It started with dry and by seven years it was wet. I knew when it happened. I am now considered legally blind. I was wondering if you had done any research on the stem cell replacement in the retina of the eye and if so how successful are they and where can you go to get clinical treatment for that?

I had cataract surgery in both eyes 9 months ago. I've had severe astigmatism my whole life and even had a crossed eye as a child. My Dr said nothing about any of this when I had my appointments for the cataracts. Anyway, your video was extremely helpful.

My question, is this hereditary and should I be worried that I might be at risk of developing amd? My Optometrist says my eyes are very healthy but did suggest that I might want to start taking an eye vitamin. I also have issues with dry eye so I've been taking an omega 3 supplement. I went for my annual eye exam and my doc told me i have a few (wet) drusen in one of my eyes. Nothing wrong with my vision. I am early 50s and he explained to me the relationship between drusen and the possibility of getting AMD. He said I don't have AMD nor did he say that I would get it. He insisted that not everyone with drusen go on to develop AMD. He did give me the advice to start taking an OTC drug called Ocuvit because of my age as a preventative measure. nonetheless I am not too happy with the diagnosis as 2 years ago he did not mention anything about drusen. He told me to have annual eye exams from now on.

Thanks. My optomotrist recommented I take a AREDS supplement 5 years ago. The study used 2 doses a day. It's dry AMD and the drusens have increased so now I typically take 1 a day rather than 2 a week. I mentioned to him that the drusens have a cholesterol componen and I mentioned that it's odd because my total cholesterol is low but my HDL is huge, over 2.2 mmol/L. Sure enough there is a connection between "good" cholesterol and AMD. Being white, having blue eyes and spending lots of time in the sunshine without blue or UV A & B protection also speeds up the progression.

I have dry AMD and it does run in my family; my mom and her mom had it. I want to say that the photo you had of a page of print does not represent what I see when I look at a page of print. Instead of a black dot, I just see more blurriness in the center of the page, and random letters are just missing. I can still read reasonably well using an iPad on the largest font.

I certainly don’t recommend sugar. But I personally recommend some form of a whole food plant based diet. Whether that be high or low carb is probably best based on your activity levels. But staying active is important for cardiovascular health and better blood pressure and cholesterol levels have a lower risk of AMD as well

I grew up knowing my grandfather had AMD, idk what kind though but I think dry, alongside colorblindness. Recently found out I have a both copies of one of the more common genes for AMD and it's pretty hard to deal with. My normal myopia script is -4.00 for both and just had bifocals added at -5.00. I've had glasses since I was 10 and my husband is adamant that lasix will fix it before I lose it all, but he doesn't understand the fear. My eyes are everything to me in my career, I'm a scientist
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 29 дней назад
Thank you so much for your comment and for sharing your concerns. While LASIK is a wonderful option for reducing the need for glasses, it's important to understand that it doesn't change the underlying shape of the eye or the risks associated with certain conditions like macular degeneration or retinal changes from nearsightedness. However, there are several ways to reduce the risk of macular degeneration, such as maintaining a healthy diet rich in leafy greens and antioxidants, wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV light, and not smoking. I recently did a livestream on this topic, and I think you'd find it really helpful. I'd encourage you to check it out to learn more about how to take proactive steps in protecting your eye health. ru-vid.comif-fytdsYoI?feature=share Please feel free to reach out if you have any more questions or concerns-I'm here to help!

He has had many injections in the wet eye that seemed to of slowed the leaking. I've been told this may be hereditary? My eye Dr. checks me every year for AMD and so far no sign. My eye Dr has been watching my eyes which show signs of glaucoma, but she is almost convinced it is the shape of my eye as my pressures and peripheral vision is excellent as well as my overall vision.

I have two questions if you have the chance to answer them. My mother was diagnosed with AMD when she was in her late 70s or early 80s. She had several older siblings, one of whom had been a long term smoker, and none of them developed AMD, nor have any other of her relatives. She has been under the care of a retinal specialist and the AMD progressed quite slowly with treatment, but now at 93, she mostly just has peripheral vision. My first question: I have heard what I think is mostly anecdotal connection between getting cataract surgery and developing macular degeneration afterward, as though the cataract surgery was a causative factor in developing AMD. I now am 69 and probably will need to get cataract surgery before much longer, from what my ophthalmologist has noted. Is there a causative link between cataract surgery and developing AMD? And the second question is: Do advancing cataracts also cause issues of needing more light to read clearly, and having problems with glare driving at night? I see my optometrist and my ophthalmologist regularly, and they tell me I have no signs of AMD. Thank you, Dr. Allen for your clarity and insight in these great videos!

Hi. Thank you Dr for this informative video. My mom is diagnosed with dry AMD, and exactly yesterday she was diagnosed with wet AMD, and now she is getting three injections of Avastin (one month apart). I have two questions. 1. What is the difference between other anti-VGEF medications such as Eylea, Beovu, and Avastin. 2. Are there new anti-VGEF medications out in market now that can be done annually or every six months instead of monthly? 3. If someone is diagnosed with wet AMD and does the injection, what are the chances of getting wet AMD again? in other words, is it possible that you treat wet AMD and you never get it again? or when it happens, it keeps coming back. I will be grateful, if you inform me about these questions. thanks again.
@cloudgazer4570

I'm rather late, but. The other products are very similar with practically the same effectiveness and risks as studies have shown. Usually they start with one product, and then switch to another if there is no improvement after a series of 3 injections. All products must be given monthly and a total of 3 injections in case of wAMD. There is Ozurdex which is given only once and then the patients have at least 3 months of no therapy, only checkups but it's not an anti VEGF agent but a Dexamethasone implant and it is not used to treat wAMD. wAMD is a chronic disease. Once the diagnosis is given it stays for a lifetime. It can not "regress" back into dAMD. It can go into an inactive phase and then can get back to active once again. The vast majority of patients will need several series of treatments and thus will be treated with IVOMs for years, sometimes decades. At least a slow progression and vision loss is still most of the time observable despite the treatment. Very few patients experience longer phases of inactivity and no need for treatment whatsoever, and even fewer will reach an absolute stable inactive phase after only one or a few series of IVOMs with no need for treatment at all ever again.
