Drying and fire hardening an elm stave for a selfbow - Bowmaking - Longbow - DIY 

Update! This bow exploded without warning. I think I cooked it to hard and to fast. I’ll let you know when I’ve made another with this method!

String follow is very normal. Even composite bows get "string follow" even though u can bend them back to straight

Thanks for making this! I've seen Thad/Keith's video and Clay's as well, but it's always nice to see another variation! How did you make your form? I'm mainly interested in how you created the curve.

What is the backset of that bow now,maybe you have used it a bit and left it strung for longer periods, I ask because I am experimenting with the same process, must say tho I have'nt gone to the stage of actually blackening the wood, maybe I need to!!

the chineese and japanees do thaat to the bamboo. the elm bow I made was a noodle, but when heated it was super., and too the elm in my region is light brown.

Hi Peter, great video. I to am experimenting with the firehardening process, at present I am making a 54" flatbow from hard maple, I tried one session over the charcoal but didn't quite get the result I was hoping for.I'm starting to realize that you really have to 'cook' that wood, just not really crazy about the burnt wood look! But, if you get those results I guess I can live with it! Have made a proper form and wiil try again.. Cheers from Waikato, New Zealand..

You have to split and expose the wooden logs to moving air if you don't intend to smoke them

It works very good, ive done it with an elm stave ive cut one month before but in winter so the wood was quiet dry. Didnt Crack at all

Thor is a handsome Vizsla, and that's a good looking bow. If you plan to hunt Thor, introduce him to the gun carefully. I once had a big beautiful Vizsla. He was a great pet, but his previous master ruined him as a hunter. He was so gunshy the sight of a shotgun frightened him.

peter is there another type of glue i can use instead of hide glue? getting to a point where hide glue smells to much. does titebond glue make a supplement

I once bought a moisture meter for this and then learned you apparently have to drive the pins into the wood the whole way to get accurate readings, so I guess not terribly useful for bows. Maybe they can measure the very outer layer. If you force moisture out with heat you definitely need to allow it to stabilize for a week or two before shooting or its too dry and brittle.

I have been making a few Osage bows including a bendy bow which I love. I have some hickory ready and plan to heat treat and fire harden them. The white woods are a little more tricky in some ways but can make great bows. great video again my friend

What does climatizing the bow do

Doesn't matter how much it "follows the string" beyond the straight line. It matters how much it "follows the string" over all. Bows with "set back" in general are stressed much more than straight bows , so they have to be thinner and wider than a straight bow. It's a false assumption that setting back a bow would help with stringfollow.

Good evening Peter 😃 One consideration & I'm not sure it's applicable for Bows 🤔 The Australian aboriginal community placed their boomerangs & nulla's in clay pits about 2 feet deep & packed the clay ! On top of that was their camp fire for 6 to 9 months & then remove 😃 I would love to trial the concept with a hand shaped bow when i have available time 🤔
