How do I use thee, pumpkin powder.? ..Let me count the ways! So many exciting recipes are enhanced with the addition of pumpkin powder--fresh pasta, muffins, ice cream, pumpkin bread, meatloaf, pancakes, cakes, and the list goes on. If you have a dehydrator or a freeze dryer, you can make your own. It keeps well and is a great addition to your food storage.

So it appears that dehydrating pumpkin takes a bit of work, but the return on the investment is a very dense powder that will go a long way in the end. LOL, now I've got visions of pumpkin-spice cake dancing through my head!

In the spring my garden was flooded and the vines almost died. My pumpkins are about the same size as the ones you have. In the past I have struggled with trying to cut and scrape and chop them to make pies and bread. This year I figured out if I use a 1 or 2 inch paddle bit and drill a hole in each end place it in the microwave for 8 to 10 minutes when it comes out it is soft and easy to peel and the seeds are easier to scrape out. With an exit for steam to escape there is no chance of a pumpkin explosion in the microwave. Lol Its faster and less stress on hands and wrist I can process more back to back. Hope this helps everyone who dislikes cutting up pumpkins in the fall as much as I dislike it. Love all your blogs ,thank you for sharing. Rebecca

Pam, last month I cut, cubed & canned a 15 lb pumpkin from my garden. Due to age & arthritis, just the cutting, cubing & peeling took me all day. And a week of pain. Today, I took another 14 lb pumpkin off the vine. I decided to put the whole pumpkin, stem & all, into my 23 quart Presto. Steam canned for 10 minutes. What a wrist, hand, arm saver, as well as time saver. I cut, peeled, and grated the pumpkin up for the dehydrator (thanks for the grating tip), as well as cleaned the kitchen, all in 1 1/2 hours. I am sure different sizes and types of courgettes will need different times. but 10 minutes worked perfectly for my 14 pounder. I can highly recommend this work saver tip!

I'm really enjoying the food storage powder series Mrs. Pam. I didn't know you could make pumpkin powder this way. Dehydrating compared to freeze drying yields way less but either ways works. I don't have a deydrator or freeze dryer so I guess I'll just use my oven. Thanks again Mrs. Pam for sharing this with us. 🙂

The methods used, dehydrating vs freeze dried, produce different volumes, from the same weight of pumpkin. So it's not "less" from dehydrating, as it's the same amount of pumpkin, but a smaller dried volume.

Aren't both these machines fun? I reconstitute the exact way you do with the dehydrated powder. What amazes me is the little space this powder takes up vs. pumpkin in jars or tin cans. I'll take the powder any day!! Thank you for the great content! Waiting on the next video!

You can use a multi purpose appliance. We were gift a glass air fyer. Has the heating element in the top. I can squeeze 4/11 inch rounds. It takes a bit of monitoring as the timer only works 1 hrs. The excess liquid condenses on sides & bottom. It was a good start in experimentation. I was very successful with citrus. And powder the rinds was excellent. I will use the powder added to hot tea & vanilla cake etc. With all unknown future I thought it best to embrace all possibilities. I've done a 10 inch pumpkin. Cleaned & roughly chopped. Leaving skin on. The air frying process on low was successful. I peeled the out rind for pumpkin powder. The rest I made a delicious pumpkin soup that was extremely tasty and Healthy.

Once you have a dehydrator, there's no turning back. Food preservation using one is so easy and very satisfying. Builds prep pantries quickly. If you only dehydrate one pound of food a day, you would have the equivalent of 365 pounds of food in a year which is shelf stable using a fraction of shelf space. if stored correctly, dehyd. food Good luck to you.

Pam, score your pumpkin for the freeze dryer to make it more manageable. Just use that square scraper to smooth it out then score/divide each tray. I do the same thing with Yams, pumpkin or any purée squash. Wait till you try FD Yams, they are delicious even as a snack in chunks. I personally like the powders for storage and reconstituting. Great video.

Do you have a website or presentation that you do on the internet like Pam does? Do you prefer the freeze-drying to the regular dehydrator? And if so, which one? I'm trying to decide it's so expensive to do either one. I learned just recently that the brand new convection oven I bought for myself for my birthday has a dehydrator function! And I'm nervous to use it

You talked me into freeze drying some pumpkins! I love what you did. My husband adores pumpkin pie, so I can talk him into helping me. Here is my question: If you have freeze dried eggs, how much of the freeze dried egg powder and water do you add to make it like a fresh egg/pumpkin pie? Would you have a recipe developed for freeze dried pumpkin pie with freeze dried eggs? I can see this going into you & your sister Cindy’s new book! I would love that and I bet everyone would too. Thank you for this video. Again, as always, I learned so much. Next question: would you do a video on pumpkin seeds? My mom and grandmother never had fresh pumpkins at all. I’m clueless. 🧡

I just separate the seeds (give the stringy stuff to any kind of bird or compost) rinse seeds & springle whatever seasonings you like while they are wet. I taste them- then pop them into a cooler over like 225 or 300 for as long as it takes to get them crispy. I find making them real crispy ensures the outer seed hull is as edible as the inner seed.

Oh, how I wish I could be across from your back yard...my dogs LOVE pumpkin and squash skins. They eat them all...no waste when I cook either one...they would love to visit you. Once the 31st is over, I'm going to visit a local farmer to get some of the pumpkins and squash he cooks...delicious produce. Thank you for sharing this video. Blessings!

Wonderful. Do you think this would work with squash? I have grown lots. I'm going to try it. Many thanks.

Oh wow ok… thanks! I tried to dehydrate pumpkin before but didn’t blanch it first and it was gross. I’ve got a bunch of pumpkins to process from the garden… I’ll be using your method!!
