Great video! Thanks! BTW, I live in Oklahoma, so I've been drying herbs in my hot car! Usually only takes one day! I dried sliced plums and apples in the car, too!
Thanks. I have had zero interest in this kind of thing, until taking over a coworkers orphan herb garden. It's all very interesting, and it sounds silly but I love it now.
I have got all three daughters into gardening. In fact one daughter’s husband now wants to become a farmer and grow his entire food supply (veggies, raise pigs, chickens, etc) I’m having a terrible time trying to propagate sage. You have answered a lot of questions here. Going out to try your tips! Thank you.
Thank you for a great video. Couple of queries: 1. Do you leave the brown bag open or closed in order to dry the leaves 2. After bottling the dried leaves, do you store them in the refrigerator or in the pantry?
This has been so helpful and you have a great kind way of explaining things. Thank you for sharing your experience, knowledge and love for herbs. All the best with your continued gardening
Thanks for your informative video. I really enjoy it. One question for you, would I be able to use the same suggested steps for drying and propagating with white sage?
Your sage plants are the prettiest I've seen. Just starting out from seed at this point, but hoping my plants look very similar to yours as opposed to the more slender leaves. Thanks for sharing!
All of the rosemary in my garden came from a prepackaged fresh supply of springs from the store. I used half of it to bake a lamb roast and the remaining half to root in water. I planted those sprigs and I’ve since propagated from those plants. Now I’ve got rosemary coming out my ears. It’s a lovely prolific plant that really adds to the garden all year long.
I did enjoy your video. You have inspired me to try drying leaves from my sage plant. I shall also attempt to propagate pieces to share with friends 😊. Thank you so much! Keep those thumbs green 😉. Lady Bell
White sage is the plant most often used in burning bundles, it is endangered in the wild. It can be used as a culinary herb. Common sage (the one he has in the video) can also be used in burning bundles. SO they are both fine for any use.
like our Native ancestors taught us, we burn sage to bless our homes and to encourage peace, love, health, and freedom from fear and destructive harmful thoughts. We have been burning sage more than ever this year. You can do a RU-vid search for videos by respected elders on how to do sage blessings and you can learn how to make sage sticks (they look like chubby cigars) and if you run out of sage you can purchase sage sticks for blessings on Amazon. Native people can pick sage on their lands, but it is endangered in the wild from over harvesting so responsible people who respect sage grow it from packaged seeds. Blessings.
White sage is the holy grail of sages. Used medicinally and to make cleansing bundles, it is indeed endangered from over harvesting and is somewhat hard to start from seed. Cherish your white sage. I was finally able to get some started from seeds and have a small stand that is 4 years old. Had no luck cloning because I just stuck the pruned pieces in soil. Thanks to this video, I will try again.
Might not be necessary depends where you are. My winters can drop to below 0 and my sage has started to regrow without much help. Very resilient plant.
Thanks for the tips, the sage we have is the thin pointy leaf kind. Last year we grew some but the squirrels ate it all, and now they have come back after not doing anything to protect them over the winter even in -20 weather. hardy plants thats for sure. Hopefully i get to dry some this year.
The sage you show is culinary sage and the cultivar is, I believe, Sage 'Berggruen.' This culinary sage is rather different that the long-leaved sage, which I guess could be used for culinary use, but is stronger and bitter, but the plant has wonderful profus purple flowers in summer that are much loved by bees.
Hi Khang--I have a healthy sage plant in my garden and for some reason, this season it has come back bright green instead of the soft green the leaves used to be. The leaves taste more bitter in this new color. What happened to my plant and how do I get the soft pale green leaves back? It is April now. I like to use the light green leaves fried on top of salmon.
Thank you Khang, You have given me the best advice that I have gotten yet. I am a city girl afraid of natural things because it isn't in a jar :) I have had sage for years. I make home made sausage which call for sage and I was buying sage because I didn't know how to dry my sage. you have been very helpful.
Nice herbs next to your sage. QUESTIONS: 1: What is the green and white plant to the right of your sage, is that an herb too? 2. Do you close the paper bag or leave it open when drying the sage? 3. Does the bag need to be in a warm place to dry and not mold? My house temperature is kept at 68 degrees. 4. Does the Sage come back in the spring if you get below freezing temperatures? 5. If it does come back in the spring in colder climates, do I need to transfer it out of my 20 gallon pot to the ground in order for it to survive? 6. Can you grow sage indoors? Thanks for the nice video on harvesting and drying sage. I am going to give it a try right now. This is my first time drying sage.
That´s very cool, thank you. I will try to buy a sage plant now. Is it important to use a paper bag for drying? Would it harm to leave it in the open, on a table or in sunlight?
Can you do a video on bacteria infections or fungus on pepper plants if ya haven't already. I had 5 plants wiped out in a week cuz I didn't know what was happpening
Thank you very much for this video Khang. We have moved to a house that has a huge sage bush and I wondered if I could propagate it and maybe gift it to friends and family. Your video is just what I needed. Thank you once again.
Hilarious! I was thinking something is so familiar in this video?? I have the same marble counter top and I live in Cuenca, Ecuador! I grow my own sage and it is very thick and furry. It takes a long time to dry. It is medicinal and used in tea to cure pulmonary issues like coughs, pneumonia, bronchitis.
I use the paper bag method too. I have also dried it in a low temperature oven, but you have to be very careful because it is easy to heat it too long and ruin it. 150 rot 6 to 10 minutes should be long enough for most herb when layed in a single layer on parchment paper.
Patrice's Projects Hi, can you please tell me more about the paper bag method. Such as, do you leave the top open? Can you use any size paper bag, i.e. “lunch bag” size? Thank you. I look forward to receiving your reply.
Since there are so many different varieties of sage, which varieties are best and most fragrant for growing in the garden? What variety are you growing?
What a great video. You left no stone unturned. Your videos have really helped me with my horrible gardening skills. If I could only figure out why I can´t get cilantro and parsley to grow... I live in Mexico City so I think the climate is right. I just propagated some sage (salvaje) that I bought from the supermarket. I hope it works.
How often do you water Sage? I'm in California it's 90 degrees every day. What do you feed sage? Also, how do you prune it? I have some and it's shooting up all over the place and dying in some places, it's pretty big now tho!
Hey my new best teacher 👍👍👍 Thanks for all the information. . I just got my Ghost chillies up an running. .they look very small but I guess there grow next year Thanks again . Pizz
I've tried propagating sage so many times..and no success for me..they just turned brown and rotted..is there a certain time that's best to take cuttings plz
Yes, they will do well in containers. In my experience, they grow best in nice, soft soil that allows excess water to drain easily. Good organic compost are excellent to hep them grow big and healthy.
A simple, elegant plant. Thank you. I've been growing this past year but haven't used any in cooking. I have given as gift. Very pretty. I'm drying some now and will use soon.
Khang, thank you for this well thought out, well presented and total start to finish of a project. I am growing sage this year and plan to follow your advice.
Thanks for the info! Trying the propagation today for the first time...never had any luck but I'm gonna use your technique . Have a safe one brother :)
Very good video. Just purchased Garden sage for myself and seems like a very Medicinal herb with many Uses. Keep Gardening and stay Healthy Viewers.....friends n Family
