Drying Early First Cutting Orchard Grass

Date: 5/2-3/2023
In this video we are trying to get some first cutting orchard grass dry to bale before rain comes on Friday. You will see Tedding with the Deutz 6150. We put plastic and pallets down to be ready to stack on the new lean to and we take the tracks off the Gehl 6635 skid steer to move totes of firewood and other things. We do a little work on the fuel system on the Oliver 1650 and bale a few bales…stem moisture is a bit high. So we go ahead and get the preservative system working so we will be ready to bale the next day.

Such a tough call! That stem moisture in the super early stuff is so tricky. I've been there - I think you made the right decision, though it's so hard to pump the brakes and delay baling when it feels *so* close and you have everything set to go. Hope all went well!

Yeah it’s tough when it’s so close. Like I always say, if rain was coming it would bale. But since it’s not we’re gonna wait. It turned out pretty good though.

I’m sure the acid isn’t good for the baler. But I try to clean it off pretty good whenever I use it.

I’ve made some executive decisions like that before!!!😂 You have to take chances this time of year because you get limited dry days until mid summer!!

Yeah it worked out this time. And if it didn’t at least it was a small field. Having some preservative makes it a little easier too

Yep I did one of my small fields Sunday & it has rained a little every day since, maybe I can Tedder it tomorrow & get it to dry good enough to bale if it was round I’d turn it over let it lay half a day & roll the crap out of it but folks need squares so it’s squares!!!

I don’t think my horse customers would go for putting up my hay that early.

My horse customers don't tell me how to make hay. They buy good hay from me and rely on me to get that job done. If they want to tell me how to do it I'd say they could do it themselves.

@@thebalerman well my horse customers love my hay including 2 veterinarians. All I know I’m sold out every fall. But if early hay works for you then go for it.

Same here. The earlier you get 1st cut done the better second you’ll have. The more mature it is the lower quality it is.

@@Dave-ll6ei Obviously I'm not lowering the quality of this hay. I got it early and therefore higher quality. The quality decrease as the hay matures, not the other way around.
