Thanks so much for the side by side comparisons of the different Morels. I always enjoy your videos.

@@northernwildharvest Are morchella elata the ones you call the naturals/ greens? On a side note, I`ve probably bought morels that you guys picked. Great videos!
@northernwildharvest
@northernwildharvest Год назад
@@jadenkrosis3087 true Morchella elata the species don’t grow in NA, they are native to europe however the elata clade, which are all black morels, are most of what we’re harvesting. The greens are Morchella exuberans and yes they are in the elata clade. but they are distinctly different than the early fire morels that we refer to as naturals, also sometimes called conicas, both of which are outdated terms because of the scientific categorizing changing fairly recently. All of them are in the elata clade of black morels.

@@northernwildharvest Very Good! And this explains why you prefer the greens, and I myself have plenty of dried morchella here at my home in Michigan which I have purchased. I have tomentosa (fuzzy foot) conica (exquizzitte`) importuna (not bad!) and aslo some exuberans (exquizzitte`maximum`) Anyhow I`m sure you`re very busy and as such my measly morel season in Michigan is about to begin. In a three month season here, 117lbs has been my best. I am considered a heavyweight over here. I would not even move the scales in your arena. All I can say is that I feel so good to know that, there are so many more levels higher than my own station, which keeps me from being arrogant, keeps me humble. I love your channel!

@@jadenkrosis3087 Sounds like we share a passion for harvesting mushrooms! Right on, how great is it to be in a place where we can harvest morels?! Burns harvesting is definitely quite different, 117lbs of true naturals is great. Thanks for the kind words also, glad you're enjoying our vids. Happy harvesting!

hey guys thanks for sharing your mushroom picking from last year . I recognize some of the roads that you were on in this episode from the Elephant Hill Fire but i went in from Loon Lake. Actually stopped and talked to you on the ranch road the one day . Anyhow it has been great seeing all of these videos and look forward to the next . Hoping you get some Matsu videos this year . If there is any. I am really hoping for a great year of picking .

Hey G.A. Gigger, thanks for watching. More to come! Elephant hill was a fairly good year, lots of people but the area near loon lake was nice. Fingers crossed for a good fall mushroom season!

Those "greenies" sure look meaty. How's the flavor? Also, how would you rank each species in taste? Really interested in what you guys consider the best.
@northernwildharvest
@northernwildharvest Год назад
Randy and I consider the greenies to be the best in flavor and texture but that is personal preference. All morels are great but the greens are very nice, the challenge is the insects feel the same, so it's common to see insect damage on them. Tomentosa are a close second.

How many years can you return to a burn?
@marijuonko7092

I'm from sw Pennsylvania and I'm lucky to find a few dozen a season. I had a spot where I was able to pick grocery bags full. Showed one buddy my spot and now it's completely ruined. Never show people where your pick your morrels
@northernwildharvest
@northernwildharvest Год назад
That’s unfortunate, sorry to hear it. These are fire morels so they are a one time harvest the spring following a wildfire.

@Northern Wild Harvest ok is that why their so abundant? Glad I found your channel. You guys are living thw dream. Keep up the good work.
@northernwildharvest
@northernwildharvest Год назад
@@marijuonko7092 that’s one of the reasons they are so abundant. The whole burn isn’t like this, it was a better than average patch but the burn can stimulate them to grow.
@kingfisherfd2
@kingfisherfd2 Год назад
Are you looking in burns that are the previous year? Or is it a certain number of months? I'm just wondering if some of the controlled burns that happen on public games lands would be worth looking in depending on when the burns happened.
@northernwildharvest
@northernwildharvest Год назад
Yes we are on burns from the previous year. Might be worth checking recent controlled burns from the previous summer, especially if you find some in coniferous forest areas.

A lot more than that! There's a couple more episodes left in the season and then after that we will have a season overview which shows the season total with a daily breakdown.

@northernwildharvest Год назад
@@jadenkrosis3087 We just love doing it. The harvest can't always be this prolific but it's sure nice when it is. There's been a few fires that Randy has picked in past years that put this to shame though!
