Thanks to my dry suit I've got 10 dives in this year already despite the water being only around 40F. It's actually harder to stay warm out of the water! Really enjoyed this series 🙂

Hello Tim Gosling, glad to hear you have enjoyed our series on Drysuit Diving. Your experience is shared by others who have made the investment in purchasing a Drysuit. It allows a diver to start their dive season sooner or continues their dive season once it turns cold. In most situations, it eliminates the seasons. The entire year becomes the dive season.

Hi Bryan! Love the drysuit series so far! Just a note, the music at the start/ intro in most of your videos seems VERY loud in comparison to the talking part

Hello Dreoni, thanks for letting us know. We are still working out some of the bugs. Hopefully our audio quality will get better real soon. We recently changed our audio and video equipment, and are still learning how to use it.

Hi Bryan , do you teach in the dry suit if your students are in wet suit ? or do you dive teach in what your students are diving in. great series thanks

Hello NAA. Great question. It all depends on the dive, the course, and the environment. If I have a large class that I’m going to be in the water all day, while the students take turns getting in and out of the water, then I will dive Dry. If I am just making one dive then I will dive a thicker wetsuit. It just all depends. I prefer to be comfortable through out my dives, even if I am teaching.

Does SSI advise using a drysuit for buoyancy purposes too, or just inflate a little to prevent squeeze?

Hello Gijs van Lieshout. In general, BCD’s are for buoyancy, and the Drysuit is for exposure protection. However, if a diver is properly weighted, their buoyancy will be effected by adding air to their suit. The same amount of air goes into the suit as the BCD when the inflator button is pushed. I train my Drysuit divers to use the minimal amount of air possible to eliminate squeeze. With the proper undergarments, a diver should stay warm without the need for too much air. In the Perfect Buoyancy Course we focus on proper weighting from the start, regardless of the suit they are wearing, and most students realize, they really only use their BCD at the surface. This is what we call a balanced rig. You use air in the BCD to stay at the surface, and you release it to descend. Neutral buoyancy is based on the amount of weight worn and their breathing. We have a video explaining balanced rigs that you may find interesting.
