Thanks for making this! I was trying to do a case swap on my DS Lite and broke the power switch when I was putting the bottom cover on. I'll have to try this replacement guide some time.
@@mat7540 When you start, be careful when desoldering the current power switch. I sort of ruined the pads... The switch was a bit hard to get off so when I kept the soldering iron on I burned one pad and accidentally pulled off another. Haven't attempted anything with that particular board since then, lol. BUT, I've read that the switch doesn't need all of the pads to function, some are just there for mounting purposes. I may give this another go today.
SolKnightt thanks for the advice, I’m thinking of just applying a little flux and hitting it with the hot air gun until it gives way. I’ll let you know how it goes
@@mat7540 Forgot to post back. I was able to solder on a new power switch using just the 4 remaining pads. Everything was back to normal until I put in a new screen that didn't have any shielding on the back (like electrical tape or similar). That blew the F2 fuse lol. Live and learn I guess!
SolKnightt ouch! I’m glad I read this so I know not to make that mistake. I actually spent an entire day looking for the replacement power switch I got off eBay. I’m assuming I accidentally tossed it :( gotta order another one darnit
Nicely done. I followed your guide and it worked for me. A heat-gun is a really necessary part of this fix, if you don't want to lift the tracks on the motherboard here. It's the only way to get enough heat onto all the pins at the same time.
1:50 What is the device you used here? You called it a blowing device. It looks as if it heated the solder joints so you could pull the part off the board without damaging the pad. I used those plastic solder suckers which take quite a bit of time to remove solder and aren't the best size for these small points. You had some difficulty soldering the new part in place given that it is not a through-hole component (it doesn't have legs which fit through holes in the board) but rather a surface-mounted part. When I need to hold a part in place (through-hole or otherwise), I use a piece of tape to hold it down in place. I then remove the tape after soldering.
It's a hot air blower - sometimes called SMD rework station. Its an alternate way but it is possible to melt the plastic in the switch with it - so it needs to be used with caution. If you have a fine tipped soldering iron and good eyes and steady hands that it the most precision way of changing them I think.
6:35 when you tried putting in the new switch what you could've done is add flux first, place new switch on top of the solder joints while holding it with tweezers and used the heatgun to get it to sit flush. that is what louis rossman does. when he places a new chip back he adds flux on top o the solder that is already there, sits the chip on top of the solder joints, and uses the heatgun to get the solder melted thus placing the chip back. you did it the hard way 7:20 haha.
Is this a better way to replace the volume switch? That s what I was trying to figure out because the plastic black nob on mine snapped when I was replacing my old shell for a new one.
Hello, before I remove the switch my DSL can still turn on when I short the PWSW with ground, but after removing the switch (I did damage the 2 pads lower section of the switch) now my DSL can't even turn on (shorting the PWSW with ground). Please help
Hello Rean. Yes you definitely can. I have used IPA - Isopropanol Alcohol to do this. You could also try using an electrical contact cleaning solution like Deoxit to do the same thing. Elliott from The Retro Future does this with IPA all the time.
I did a quick video showing how I would clean the switch with IPA if you are interested - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KLbEhfT-WHI.html Thanks again for the comment and I mentioned it in the video too - sorry if I said the name wrong :)
Hey there, did it work properly?? i had to replace the switch but as you could see it´s a little bit different than the one that comes with the nintendo. I have te same replacement switch than you. What did you do with the two extra pins that the switch had???
Thanks for reaching out Martin. My switch turned out to be the exact replacement - Each of the pins on the switch had a pad on the board so I didnt have extra pins to play with. I did buy the switch from ebay as a 'replacement NDSL power switch.' I had been looking on alibaba / banggood etc to see if I could find a strip of these switches cheaper - but couldnt - maybe you got a more generic switch from somewhere.
Back in 2019 when I recorded this they were easy to buy on ebay for less than £10 - Not sure if thats the case now though - try searching on your local ebay you never know - also see if you can find one with a broken screen as you can alwasy harvest the board from that if you are lucky
@@spidermaf okay thank you, it's very hard to find atm so it's probably better to buy a new power switch and try to fix it or just buy a new ds right away
I've used on of my kids broken toys power switch. Line up the positive and negative and it should still work. Down side was it didn't fit back in the shell so do a dry fit first to see if it will work for you.
Hey Benjamin - thanks for your question - I don't think you can - but I did a short video comparing the switches. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B52Ctsv02bw.html thank you for the video idea. Sorry if I pronounced your name incorrectly.
fml... I managed to break this thing twice. Twice. I knew what I did wrong when putting the shell back on the first time and then I broke this goddamn pin on a second DS Lite. I''ll attempt this fix tomorrow with the new power switches I ordered from AliExpress. Hopefully nothing goes wrong...
Hiya GamesMajor. If you have recently taken apart your DS the plastic slider may be the wrong position on the switch. It's hard to describe this in text. Give me a couple of days and I will do a video about it to explain. If you haven't taken it apart and you have had it from new I cant think of what the problem may be.
spidermaf Did the ds lite switch work properly? I also need to replace a power switch on my ds lite. But I believe I took 2 pads off the motherboard smh. If you could let me please. I would like to fix my ds lite. Thank you. And great video btw.
Yup - its still working now. If you have took the pads off its probably because the solder had not melted before you lifted the switch. You can possibly add 'botch wires' to run a little wire from the switch to the place that it connects to but thats more fiddly. I would recommend that you try and buy a new ds-lite motherboard from ebay if the pcb is damaged - probably a cheaper and easier way to fix your ds.
