DSAT R&W: A Challenging Graph Question (Command of Evidence - Quantitative)

This is an unusual and pretty challenging question that appears on Module 1 of Digital SAT Test 5 (the linear/PDF version, not the Bluebook version) that a student requested I go over.
I thought I would use this question to emphasize the value of making a simple diagram (e.g., a quick sketch of a graph) on science-y R&W questions, especially ones that involve complicated relationships between variables. However, there is an additional wrinkle to this question having to do with the x-axis of the graph and the way it depicts time.

If the ocean oxygenation is inverse to the manganese to calcium ratio, wouldn’t it be a substantial increase in oxygen in the alboran sea?

It would if this were a normal graph. However, since the x-axis measures years before the present, you have to read it from right to left (and not the usual left to right) to identify whether the Mn:Ca ratio is increasing or decreasing over a given time interval. If you trace the line/curve for the Alboran Sea backward from 10,000 years ago to 8,000 years ago, the Mn:Ca ratio increases, which means the oxygenation decreases over that interval. It's a very unusual and confusing graph-something I've never quite seen them do on an SAT or even an ACT.

@@345tutoring The reading sections were not too difficult. A lot of words from your vocab list showed up. The math mod 2 was insane. Overall, I feel pretty good.
