In this video, I go over how to approach questions that ask you to either strengthen or weaken an argument (claim, hypothesis, etc.) on the Reading & Writing section of the Digital SAT. (Officially, these are known as (Command of Evidence - Textual" questions.) I explain the basic strategy and then go through a couple of specific examples from official practice tests.

Full text of example passages:
1) "In the mountains of Brazil, Barbacenia tomentosa and Barbacenia macrantha-two plants in the
Velloziaceae family-establish themselves on soilless, nutrient-poor patches of quartzite rock. Plant ecologists Anna Abrahão and Patricia de Britto Costa used microscopic analysis to determine that the roots of B. tomentosa and B. macrantha, which grow directly into the quartzite, have clusters of fine hairs near the root tip; further analysis indicated that these hairs secrete both malic and citric acids. The researchers hypothesize that the plants depend on dissolving underlying rock with these acids, as the process not only creates channels for continued growth but also releases phosphates that provide the vital nutrient phosphorus."
2) "Many archaeologists will tell you that categorizing excavated fragments of pottery by style, period, and what objects they belong to relies not only on standard criteria, but also on instinct developed over years of practice. In a recent study, however, researchers trained a deep-learning computer model on thousands of images of pottery fragments and found that it could categorize them as accurately as a team of expert archaeologists. Some archaeologists have expressed concern that they might be replaced by such computer models, but the researchers claim that outcome is highly unlikely."

Thank you. Just like you said I also do skip questions from 10-16 on the paper test; I realized coming back to the harder part at the end was kinda the best knowing you have solved the remaining ones. I would like to ask(never done the Adaptive test digitally) what number of questions the complex ones start from Digitally??
@345tutoring
@345tutoring Год назад
Good to hear that. Let's see, on the digital test, it varies, but it's usually around 10 or 11 through 14 or 15 where you see these questions. Each section (er, module) is a little bit different, and it seems like there are more of these questions in the hard version of module 2 (i.e., the version you get if you do well on the first module). But it's always somewhere in this same area -- around 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through.

That's a good idea. How familiar are you with the previous SAT format? There are definitely some similar question types in there, but there are also a lot of question types that you won't see on the digital SAT...

but in question no 16 where is it talking about other aspect of human isn't the answer supposed to be mentioned in the passage?
@345tutoring
@345tutoring Месяц назад
Not necessarily. If you think about the idea of the "gap" in the argument (which is often an unstated assumption), it's definitely possible for the answer to be something that isn't directly stated in the passage.

how can we identify archeologist's tasks. there are no info about that in the passage
@345tutoring
@345tutoring 11 месяцев назад
I don't think they're expecting anyone to identify an archaeologist's tasks, apart from the fact that their job involves something/anything besides just categorizing pottery fragments.

Why not D for the archeology question? If few super computers received dedicated training that means they would not replace all the archeologists because the supercomputers were few Idk why C seems clear Could you break it down with a comment please?
@345tutoring
@345tutoring 10 месяцев назад
One important thing on this question is distinguishing between what the archaeologists think and what the "researchers" think: "Some archaeologists have expressed concern that they might be replaced by such computer models, but the researchers claim that outcome is highly unlikely." So the archaeologists are concerned that they might be replaced by computer models, but the RESEARCHERS think this is unlikely. The correct answer needs to support the researchers' claim -- namely, that it's unlikely computers will replace human archaeologists. Answer choice D ("A survey of archaeologists showed that few of them received dedicated training in how to properly categorize pottery fragments") wouldn't support that. Why? Because even if archaeologists received more training in this area, it wouldn't change the fact that the computers could do it just as well. And given that computers are relatively cheap (compared to paying a human archaeologist), and given that they can work around the clock (i.e., they don't need to eat, sleep, socialize, etc.), they would still be likely to replace humans. The best way to support the researchers' claim is to show (or at least suggest) that there are other tasks that computers can't do as well as human archaeologists can do them. And that's basically what (C) does: "categorizing pottery fragments limits the amount of time [archaeologists] can dedicate to other important tasks that only human experts can do. So if the computers are brought in to categorize pottery fragments, this doesn't endanger the archaeologists' jobs, because they have plenty of OTHER things to do that computer's CAN'T do (because "only human experts can do" them).
