The DSL100HR is the latest thing from Marshall. Its wonderful, you can get Plexi broun sound, a roaring 800 crunch and Mesa Like OD2 the Tone Shift on the HR works, where the H robs sound

Great video thanks for putting it together so well, I've wondered about how these two compared. I bought a H once and couldnt sell it quckly enough... it was shite - I couldn't stand the tone. Effectively I see that the HR isnt that far removed from the H - its better, but still not what *I* want in an amp. If I could only choose one DSL, it would be a JCM2000 era not one of these. In the end, the 2203 and 1959 are the high-water mark for Marshalls. Everthing else - with perhaps the 410H-JS (thanks for a great amp Santiago) being the only exception/peer of those two - is lesser.

@Death Metal Devin (DMD) yeah it sounds amazing. I wanted a jcm 800 but that costs like 2000 more and it's only a single channel amp that needs a boost. I saw some compassion videos of the jcm800 and the 100hr and the sound similar, the 100hr more suited for modern tones and the jcm800 for vintage tones

So basically, with the master turned down that low, this is just a preamp comparison. The differences in tone could easily be from tube differences or component tolerances. Shame he didn’t crank it.

Since the new line of DSL Marshalls have come out I haven’t played a single one that didn’t fart on the low end. I use dimarzio tone zone pickups and they just sound soo flubby with this newer line.
@brandonjackson5865
@brandonjackson5865 2 месяца назад
Huh I’ve never heard anyone say that the new dsl sounding flubby . People complain about them being fizzy and they are until you get the volume up high enough on them, also I don’t think v30s are the best speaker for the DSL, unless they are paired with Cream Backs or G12T-75. If you crank the resonance up too much maybe they would get flubby but I don’t know, the resonance control is nice to use to adjust for cab and speaker combinations and probably at lower volumes but cranked up enough to get the power tubes working you might need the resonance completely off ? I play a Duncan Distortion into a sd1 into a dsl20cr and it might behave completely different than the 100 watt versions but playing it as a combo I tend to turn the resonance up but playing it thro a cab or combo and external cab I find that less resonance and more bass is the recipe. DSLs can be a scalpel super defined with the Marshall Clank with the right settings and boost , start with a SD1 and you might never need anything else. Anyway good luck to you, I’m not familiar with the Dimarzio pickup you mentioned, I’m more of a Duncan guy, but I can’t imagine how pickup making it flubby . You gotta mess with the dsl more than classic Marshalls but once you get that they can do just about anything you want them too.
@greendayray
@greendayray 2 месяца назад
@@brandonjackson5865 Yea I don’t know what it is but the new DSL models just aren’t tight. I know the dimarzio’s have a ton of mid range and low end but I didn’t have any issues with the JVM I had, or any older Marshall. But I tried the 40w combo and the 100w head for the new DSL’s and it just can’t cut it. Maybe an overdrive would help…but still I don’t know what they did wrong. Sounds nothing like the old JCM2000 DSL either.
@brandonjackson5865
@brandonjackson5865 2 месяца назад
@@greendayray yeah I don’t think they have to have an overdrive necessarily but I always use one in front of mine, some people just don’t get on with DSLs , everyone has their own ears and experience and if an amp doesn’t do that thing for you then it’s probably just better to move onto something else than try to fight it with pedals, they’re good to give you a little more of something you like but they’re probably not going to change your opinion of said amp .

HR seems to have more bloom/gain and texture/sizzle like old Marshalls did, maybe slightly crispier, to me it sounds a bit saggier, maybe due to gain. IMHO DSL H lacks Marshall "hair" which is top end sizzle which can be annoying and sound oldschool. When I listen to the bass alone it seems like HR is tracking faster, H is like AM radio (I guess thats what you call classic) more low end than low bass, but HR adds thick/sizzly layer on top of the bass it, sounds edgier, but at the same time less brutal by adding these oldschool highs/fizz/hair, at least for me. I kind of feel like H is simple, brutal and punchy. H is one of the closest amps to Splawn - at least amongst low volume amps I have played - aggressive, punchy, brutal, classic. I have even sold my Engl Blackmore as it was a bit redundant, it had that classic mid punchy tone as well (though still different of course).
@DeathMetalDevin
@DeathMetalDevin 7 месяцев назад
Killer description man. I def liked the H more so myself and felt there was more to play with there. Just sounded more organic to me. I have yet to play the JCM2000 DSL and would bet that has an even more classic touch to it. Still waiting for the right deal to pop up on that

I don’t know the difference. I can tell from this video that the amps sound different but if the circuit is “supposed” to be the same then the only difference must be the tubes. And it’s not just about the tubes gain. Each tube has different values of treble, mods and bass. Some tubes can be all bass with little treble. There are so many tubes in the DSL amplifiers where you cannot mess with the gain. The 2nd 3rd and sometimes 4th gain stage has voltage dividers. 470 over 470 is half so the 2nd gain stage divides the volume in half and you don’t get a gain control.
