The lock buttons, whatever the name given to them by the different brands on the market, are rarely used by most photographers who don't really understand their utility. But hey, it's time to level up your game! Today, we learn more about the lock buttons and the different exposure calculation modes!

BBF definitely 100% all the time, exposure lock not so much.. when shooting in manual mode, independently of metering methods, the exposure is locked anyway, in shutter or aperture priority sometimes yes, however it defies the purpose of using a semi-automatic mode to work faster, depending on the circumstances exposure compensation might be better instead of metering, locking and recomposing; if using P or M with auto ISO, why are you using them in the first place should be the question if then you want to lock the exposure. More relevant for film and DSLR than mirrorless, it is a lot easier to just use the EVF as WYSIWYG, also in digital photography exposure is “almost” irrelevant, compared to analog photography, when soothing in raw and to a certain degree in jpegs, as long as you are +/- 1.5 stops from the proper exposure it is just a move of a slider in postproduction, actually making sure that the image is exposed as bright as possible without clipping the highlights ( ETTR ) is a far better way to ensure the best result possible, only limited by the camera own dynamic range.

Wow, thank you for that relevant and technical comment! I totally agree, if the BBF (and not the BFF as I call it a million times in the video, argh) can be an everyday tool, I had to use the lock button exposure maybe, what, 20 times in my whole career? It is really for very special cases where measured exposure is not or desired. I'm more divided on the second part of what you're saying because it implies that finding the right balance in your exposition doesn't matter with today's tools since anyway, the RAW allows you to "repair" your images in post-production. Divided because I really don't think that's what I should say and teach about the practice of photography; that is kind of a lazy way, but at the same time, factually... it's true. If the highlights and whites are not overexposed, you can fix your picture in post. It's just that I'd hate to pass on to people who are new to photography that they don't need to learn how to get the best exposure possible simply because they can fix their mistakes when editing, rather than teaching them to minimize their mistakes from the start. Very interesting debate anyway, thank you again!

Nicolas Doretti we are approaching exposure in a very similar way, and very probably just explain it in a different way.. for film photography I am 100% with you, you need to get it right in camera, as postproduction isn’t as versatile as the in digital , on the contrary with modern sensors and the different properties of digital cameras it is a different approach, postproduction has much more impact and weight compared to film, for example as ISO, although mathematically working in the same way, in reality it is better to shoot at base ISO underexposed of two stops and fix in postproduction rather than push ISO up 2 stops, you will get a cleaner image, similarly concentrating on framing, appropriate shutter speed and aperture, knowing that you still have an ace in the sleeve, +/-1.5 stops in exposure, will increase your chances to nail a shot; what I am trying to say is that I try to embrace the advantages of the knew technology by trying to understand its principles, and my number 1 is sensor saturation, by exposing to the right (ETTR) I get the maximum information possible translated from what I see into digital data, maximum details from highlights to shadows, then I can bring back the blacks in postproduction, I can erase data captured but I can’t invent data that hasn’t been captured, on the other hand, when light isn’t available, by understanding that ISO values are just a signal amplification I can work on the concept of SNR, signal to noise ratio, and take advantage of a better performance in postproduction shadows details recovery instead of introducing noise in the captured data. I am an advocate of getting as much as possible right in camera, I shoot tethered whenever possible, I want to spend as little time as possible in front of the computer, but at the same time this doesn’t mean that I am aiming to not do postproduction by getting it right in camera, quite the opposite actually, I am aiming to get the best file possible for postproduction in order to achieve the best image quality possible. I believe that in the same way as in the old days you were told how to use a camera in conjunction on how to develop a film and print it, nowadays is how to use a camera and photography software, the two go hand in hand... if separated results would never be consistent. Have a nice day and apologies for being geeky 🤓
