The C&S 1009 is a neat caboose, and it's the modernized version of the DSP&P waycar from Railroads Online! Many of 1009's other sisters are still around, but we have the 1009 here at the ‪@crrm‬ . Let's check it out!

These little narrow gauge “cabeese” are definitely adorable compared to the larger ones. (The thing I always love is the amenities and work space. It’s like a literal step back in time)

Interesting to see what those pieces of rolling stock are like IRL. I guess back in the day the conductor's liqueur stash was imbibed when an engineer 'gave it the beans'!!!

Thanks for this tour of the bobber caboose, especially because it showed the interior. My HO scale shops did the reverse and removed the cupola from a bobber to make it a transfer caboose. Since my railroad uses diesels, I also had to install a coal storage bin outside the enginehouse to supply the caboose's stove. Cheers from Wisconsin!

it's funny how anything old is so fascinating and watching/listening to ppl who work at a museum always delivers the feeling of anything old is a lot of fun. i.e. playing red dead redemption and see all the beautiful scenerie, ride the old trains and fall in love with all the details, then watch hyce talking about having fun at the museum ... and then u remember all the grim things you did in rdr2 while sitting in that beautiful old train listening to the engine chonking away :D weird how the mind mends the fabric of reality to what you want to see

Neat! Waaay back in, like, 2009, I sat in the coupola of the NYOW 8146, 1883 bobber that was basically the standard gauge version of this. I’ve always loved bobbers, they are so cute & cozy. But I do remember thinking it was a bit cramped at the time, and the coupola seemed to be a precarious perch. The caboose was originally preserved by Trolleyville, I visited it at the short lived Lakeshore Electric Ry museum that was just a warehouse on the docks in Cleveland, where the collection awaited sale. Everything went it’s separate ways, the caboose is now at the Connecticut Trolley Museum. A lot of the collection went to NORM, the Northern Ohio Railway Museum... I need to get out there some day.

Australian and I think Brittish brake vans had, instead of copulas mirrored windows out the side so the brake man could just look sideways out the window and also see to the front and back! In its current state, the frame is supported by coil springs over the journals, yet there's a 1935 photo of this caboose in Leadville (Google image search) clearly equipped with much easier riding leaf springs. Why is this, or were the coil springs a workaround due to all the frame hardware and equipment missing?

Do modern cabeese have toilets as well? If locomotives have them (like mentioned in one of the Jeopardy videos), surely cabeese have them too.. Also in case of bobbers, "Make sure you maintain 3 points of contact when riding in the cupola." 😁

Unfortunately there are no "modern" cabooses. At least in North America. They have been phased out for a long time in the US, replaced by the EOT device (think "computer brakeman"). You do still see them on various short lines and heritage trains and such but they are extremely rare on mainline trains. However to answer your question: yes many cabooses did have a toilet. Most of which were nothing more than a bucket, or a hole in the floor or a cassette toilet. Can't say I've seen a vacuum pressure toilet in a caboose, but I imagine they are out there on later models. I'm not a professional, just a railfan, I'm sure others would know more.

We have three(ish) - the 04990, which is owned by the city of boulder, and modified from a boxcar and has no interior; then the poor 0585, which is a genuine D&RGW long caboose, but someone cut the sills (main stressed member) and we jokingly call it "the caboose that fell out of orbit" - it's sagging really badly and desperately needs repairs; and then RGS caboose 0404, which is actually in pretty good shape and has been in train service within the last few years.
