This tool has kept me from tearing my fingers to ribbons making leaders and lures. BTW: thanks for the tip on breaking the wire, I was using clippers and always leaving a jagged end that I needed to file down.
I'd be willing to bet a couple more turns on that first set of loops would hold just fine. I usually do my twists by hand on the boat and 6-7 loops has brought in big kings.

Leaders should not be barrel wrapped. The art of making a strong leader is in making certain that both parts of the wire rotate around each other. Barrel turns pull out easily.
great tool , but has 1 major flaw, both prongs should be as high as the tallest prong, wire always wants to jump smaller prong, i use .031 cauge wire and tool sux trying to make twist
Hi Steve, the two pins can't be the same size as when you make the wrap for the eye of the leader you pass over the shorter post while wrapping around the larger post. Check out the video at 12 seconds in. It happens fast so you may need to watch it a few times but the wire goes over the smaller post. Sorry for any confusion. Let us know if you have more questions.
Thanks for the reply, i have tried using 0.8mm and just cant get the barrel to lock with the long end through the slit in the tool,,maybe it takes getting used to,,cheers again.
I use .032 and this says it can do it. Bull! When trying to make the eye it pops off every time. The wire fits into the slot down the side but its tight and its hard to turn the lock. When trying to barrel wrap the tag end the pin won't hold the wire in place. After all these years of fishing you would think that i would learn that these gimmicks dont work.
@shadyvito sorry you are having trouble. I assure you the Kwik Twist is not a gimmick. We have been making this tool since the 80’s and it does work well but I wonder if you have a defect in the one you have. I would be happy to replace it if so. Just oredered 1 of these. Tired of tying anchovie inserts for salmon trolling by hand (basically a homemade cable baiter or wire version of ez baiter). I forgot to ask what range of wire thickness this tool will handle. Im using stainless steel wire if that makes any difference. Thank you. That should work, but in the manufacturing there may have been a "burr" in the channel. You can start by checking/removing that if there is one. Also, the wire you are using is .032" / 0.8mm so be sure that it is not any bigger. If it is even a little bigger it can cause you issues. Hi Jennifer, the loop needs to be able to clear the small pin while making the eye so the two pins cannot be the same size or you could not make the complete eye. Sorry for any confusion.
Be sure you have the tool locked by twisting the knurled end. This closes the tool and retains the wire as shown in the video. Then be sure the wire stays under the retainer pin while twisting the barrel wraps. I am getting better at it, I think the issue I am having is that even after locking the leader in place, it still slides with no resistance and makes the twisting action very difficult. If it grabbed the wire a little tighter I think this would be a winner. I used several leader diameters with similar results (28lb-54lb).
Jim, I understand it does take some getting used to, but with some practice it will be second nature. It is made to work with a range of wire diameters so it cannot grab the wire too tightly for any of them. I am glad you are having better results now. Hi Carlos, It would really depend on the size wire you use to make the leader. Even with a lighter wire it would take a lot of weight/force to break through the wrap. Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
IMO Not as easy as it looks in the video. Been practicing and still can't get a good looking result like in the video. .014 wire. Loop is easy once you do it a few times. My problem is the Main wire wants to collapse during the twist. Seems like it needs to have tension on both ends of the wire while twisting to get a nice tight wrap. I'll keep practicing....
Hi Joseph, You could try practicing with a little stiffer wire as it may be a little more rigid and easier to get the hang of. Ok thanks. Just to let everyone know I'm not bashing the product. I do like it. I can use it to make a small loop and hand twist a haywire and wrap if I'm out on the water.

One side note, if you want to make the haywire twist, take a look at the DUBRO E/Z Twist hand tool, that is specifically made to wrap haywire leaders. Ok finally got it. They look great. With the .014 I had to close up the tip in the vise a smidge. The .014 was coming out of the slot and getting wedged between the inner and outer part when twisting. This stopped the wire from free spinning and caused the loop to buckle.
