DU Films 2018: Lake Mattamuskeet 

I once worked all around this lake with the NCFS but never laid eyes on it. Id heard of it as well as Currituck from reading stories of old time duck hunters. Duck hunting was always really special to me. Its hard to be a freelance duck hunter and I wanted to hunt over decoys calling ducks like the old days. I did have success, took a lot of work and I saw some sights only duck hunters know. Some hunt trophy deer but my 10 pt is a dozen or 15 mallards or a few blackies locked over the decoys wings outstretched spilling air like oak leaves dropping in landing gear dowm. I stopped a few years back , age , dragging boats and sadly the lack of birds made my decision. To all that love a sunrise watching and listening for ducks , have safe trips , duck weather and good luck.

I live in Arkansas now. But grew up in eastern NC. I’m an avid duck hunter. I owe it to John Bo Farley. It was a youth hunt almost 15 years ago. We busted ice to the blind that morning. After two boxes of shells I still hadn’t killed my first duck. But I was beyond hooked. I had done a lot of deer hunting but had never expierenced anything like that before. Close to running out of shells I fell out of the blind through the ice. My hunt was stopped short I was rushed back across the street to the hunting house to dry off. I met the old man Farley at that point. I will never forget him laughing about it or what he said. If you’ve never fell in then you aren’t a duck hunter! We all went and ate at a local diner. Around lunch half the kids were going into some timber. I was out of dry waders. They put my dad and I behind the old mans house in a blind right off dry land over looking a pond. After thirty minutes or so a single hen made a circle. My dad told me to get ready she’s going to it. Let her work son. She did what seemed like an hour she circled and finally committed. I finally killed my first duck. She had a band on her foot. That day couldn’t have been any better. Had i not missed all the ducks that morning and not fallen in the water I would have never been behind the old mans house on that particular pond. It’s funny how things work out. That day changed my life forever. Seeing this story on those guys is amazing and brought back all of those memories. Incredible people and what they shared with me is why I’m a duck hunter and a supporter and member of Ducks Unlmited. I will forever be greatful for that opportunity. What a day. What an outfit. What a family.

We have/had a place at Riverside Camp Ground and fish and crab Mattamuskeet. We love East Carolina!!! We are Marylanders too but spend a lot of time down there. Its great for the family and to get away from the crazy life up here. Getting your boys and girls outside loving nature is so important.

I have lived in NC all 60 years now, duck hunted in all major water ways including Lake mattamusket. I truly believe no other state can earn my love for the Old North state.

My entire family love eastern NC. My wife and I plan to retire up that way. I do wish they could get Lake Mattamuskeet back to her glory days. We need the grass back. Not just for hunting but for the benefit of all the waterfowl that need it to get through the winter.

I do my "hunting" with a camera. I never udid understand the appeal of just shooting them w firearms ?
