Hey there, my name is Bree and I moved to Germany after getting married to my German husband in College. I use this Channel to record my experiences in Germany and provide insights on challenges I experience here. You will also hear about my experience of becoming a mother in Germany and raising a bilingual child. I might also annoy you from time to time with dietary insights since that’s what I studied in College.

Due to current laws the baby will actually have dual citizenship by birth. What you have to apply for are probably a US citizenship certificate (or whatever that is called in the States) and passport. Most likely your child is able to pass on the German citizenship no matter where your grandchildren are born but it may be that the US citizenship can only passed on when they are born in the US. At least that’s the case for Germany and Canada. If someone is born outside their home country they can only pass that citizenship when their children are born in that country. That means that technically one can pass on dual citizenship.

Your baby will be like me, born with two nationalities! I am a citizen of the USA and of the Philippines. I was born in the USA to an American father while my mom was Filipino at the time of my birth. It's a very cool thing to have I gotta say

I know exactly how you feel. My husband and I live in Germany and our baby was born a month ago. Since I am German all the german stuff was easy to get. I feel like the US stuff is a lot harder to get and is connected to a lot of paperwork, actually just a lot of copies. Our appointment is in couple weeks, so we will see how that goes:)

The paperwork is completely overwhelming, but I read that the more paper/evidence you can provide, the better! Good Luck!! I hope it goes smoothly for you as well! congrats on the baby!!

Remember, as your baby is automatically a citizen by birth (the annoying paperwork is for getting the passport and social security number/getting the US to recognize the birth), it will be actually illegal for him to enter the states without a US passport! I know it's water under the bridge because you are getting the passport anyway, but just for informations sake! :)

Rain is very common in Germany. This is why so many people are so well stocked with umbrellas.

We are all over the World Cup!!⚽️🙌🏼🎉 surprisingly this one has felt like a huge plot twist! Lol! Iceland beats Argentina😳🤔 they played amazing and very strong, but who would have ever thought Iceland would have pulled that off? Must have been the Viking Chant! Hehe!!😊jk! We watched Mexico vs Germany and we were rooting for Germany. We were shocked at how flawless Mexico played and how Super FAST their players were. It was a very stressful game to watch to say the least. We are also disappointed that the USA didn’t make it. We love Dempsey, but we also like Mueller and Messi. I guess when it boils down to it, we’re hoping it’s between Germany & Argentina. Whoever wins between them we would happy.

yes I am always super surprised at every game. I don't know which teams are supposed to be good, so rimo tells me the back stories and then the outcome keeps surprising us! Hopefully Germany can make it the next game and not be kicked out!! since the US is out, im just here for the entertainment !

Bree moves to Germany it was crazy, but I don’t blame Germany at all for not scoring. Did you see Korea’s goalie and how fast and effective he was😳 It was a bit frustrating to watch. I felt as if Germany couldn’t get one in no matter how hard they tried due to how well Korea defended their goal. Crazy! Germany played well and I hope they realized that. They’ll have to come back even stronger next World Cup. 😊🙌🏼⚽️

Thanks for the info on dual citizenship. I wonder if it has changed, because I know several people with dual citizenship due to marriage. And I LOL'ed at your walking disagreements. My husband tells me that I have an "airport walk" because I always leave him behind getting to our gate. OTOH, he has a "football match walk" and leaves me behind on the way to soccer games.

My boyfriend and I always disagree about the walking speed ;) He is quite a bit taller than me so he obviously walks faster, so I just hold his hand and make him walk my speed instead :D And I can totally understand the whole forms and things you have to fill out. For my student visa there was also a LOT and I had to go to the consulate (in Frankfurt) by myself and couldn't bring a purse, electronic device or anything with me except the documents, I was so bored waiting there...

How did you find out which papers and documents you would need for your children to get dual citizenship? Looking forward to seeing how the process goes for you.

I went to the US embassy website and they have a bunch of links for each thing and I sorted through them all. I just had to write it all down as I went otherwise I got confused. It has all the forms right there to download and print out as well!

Are you sure about Germany being OK with dual citizenship? AFAIK that is true when citizens from other EU countries (+ Switzerland) are concerned, they can become Germans and still hold on to their original citizenship (except when the other country objects to that, some do). Also children born and raised in Germany can usually become German citizens, even if their parents are not EU nationals (like Turkish people). But if a national of another country (like the US) wants to become German, they will usually be asked to give up their original citizenship. The US, on the other, tolerates dual citizenship AFAIK.

@Conchita Martinez I dislike Roland Koch ("brutalstmögliche Aufklärung") as much as you apparently do, but you can't really give him credit for the current situation. Historically, Germany was in principle opposed to dual citizenships, which then changed a) for EU / Swiss citizens because it was felt that would be good for European integration, and b) for children born in Germany because so many children of Turkish nationality were born in Germany who mostly didn't acquire German citizenship, so to aid integration something had to be done. For people that don't fit these cases (EU citizens or children born in Germany), it's just the old status quo. And there are other countries, like Austria and the Netherlands, which still principally (with some exceptions) don't tolerate dual citizenships, even for citizens of other EU countries.
@imrehundertwasser7094
@imrehundertwasser7094 6 лет назад
@Conchita Martinez "at the age of 18 they have to decide which one to keep. This is basically still the situation today." Not quite, this was changed again in December 2014. Now they can, in most cases, keep the German citizenship (in addition to their e. g. Turkish citizenship) beyond the age of 23 (which was the latest date at which they had to decide before). There are some prerequisites (born in Germany, grew up there, lived there for at least 8 years before the 21st birthday, went to school there for six years etc.), but most of them will be eligible.

Think about the consequences of dual citizenship. US Army, Taxes etc.
@k8con
@k8con 6 лет назад
klaus kleber the baby is automatically an American citizen if Bree is still a citizen at the time of the baby's birth. All of the paperwork is about registering the baby and getting the American passport. But since the baby is a citizen, if Bree wanted to take the baby to the states and didn't have an American passport for him, they could get held up at the border, as its illegal for citizens to enter the states without a US passport. There aren't real consequences for this, but it's a hassle.
