Its the point where I saw young Athena's spirit utterly broken...witnessing such a horrific and tragic incident and trying to save her mother the only way she knew how. Even so, she still felt it was ultimately pointless and there was nothing that could save her. God, what a heartwrenching image.
That's not how the game portrays it. Athena was a child sheltered from the outside world and didn't have a genuine understanding of how humans worked, she just assumed they were all like robots. So when she said she was going to fix her mommy she genuinely thought she would get fixed and that smile wasn't hiding any hopelessness, which is what makes it truly chilling.
@@skunthundler If anything, she sounded ... Eerie in how eager she was. That's why it's so dark and macabre: Athena as a child genuinely thought she was helping her mother by fixing her to save her :(
By now, I've gotten used to witness breakdowns. As funny or entertaining as they can be, they seem normal. There is something about watching a lawyer break down that is different. These strong guardians of justice losing it... I'm still not used to it. Watching Athena's breakdown stunned me. "The only time a lawyer can cry is when it's all over."
@@triplecatnip7413 The whole cross examination with Blackquill is just an experience in and of itself. He's such a great master witness, using every lie to fit his narrative. Only to be caught in a lie he can't escape anymore. Phoenix asks for his trust to protect Athena, and Blackquill admits that what he saw that day haunts him even 7 years later. It's so chilling especially after the cross examination
It’s funny how this scene was the first to legitimately shock me in a game series about murders. An 11 year girl covered in her mother’s blood with a huge smile on her face is such a creepy image.
I think it's for a number of reasons. First, murder is kind of played up to where I feel like we don't even really register it. A stab, a gunshot. It's kind of whatever. But ripping someone apart, is not something we usually see, and it is such a gruesome image, it would be bad enough. But the fact that the person who did it not only didn't realize what she did, but thought she was doing the right thing because she thought robots and humans were the same. That is haunting
@@toxagen1144 by far the most gruesome murder/death in ace attorney imo, tho if there are other death's in ace attorney that anyone else think is more gruesome than this feel free to list them below
@@MetalizedSoulpuhray zehlot’s death in SoJ is close but I wouldn’t say worse, failing to push a heavy rock forward then getting impaled in the back by a statue is a sad way to go
Her story put a real twist to the entire game, and my heart reacted instantly once this started playing. I couldn't cry for some odd reason, but I wanted to for how emotional it is.
I find that Case 5 is where Phoenix's Creed is put to the test. Everything he's learned. Everything he's gone through, the loss of Mia, the loss of his Attorney's Badge, the DL-6 incident, the Matt Engarde case... he has to find the truth. He knows Athena is not guilty, but so many things were up in the air that it almost seemed impossible to divert her guilt... And that Mood Matrix image... I shudder to think what was going through Athena's head when it appeared... Imagine thinking that you actually committed matricide.
YES. And Simon too, with the loose parallel to Godot and even Edgeworth considering both were falsely accused of murder, except Simon spent seven years in jail for it.
@@fatuusdottoreDude, Blackquill has easily become one of my favorite new prosecutors. He has: The same smug attitude as Edgeworth (and some of their sprites are quite similar too!) Another very tragic backstory, like Godot Control over the courtroom (the von Karmas) through both suggestion (kinda like Manfred, I guess? not really though. he more just demands the judge hand down his verdicts far too early) and violence (like Franziska with her whip; Blackquill’s sword and pet hawk Taka let him do whatever the hell he wants) What an awesome character. I know my pattern seeking brain is stretching some of these, but the parallels to Edgeworth specifically have to be on purpose considering they know each other, I’m sure he must’ve learned a thing or two from him as my headcanon. Wright has Apollo and Athena, and Edgeworth surely has to have trained new prosecutors too, maybe? Who knows. But yeah, blackquill is awesome
yeah especially once blackquill finally confessed the truth, you could tell Phoenix was more desperate than ever before. he really had an impressive performance in this case
This song sums up the mood of Turnabout for Tomorrow so well. Definitely the darkest case in the entire series (with the possible exception of Farewell, My Turnabout). Without spoiling anything for those who have not played it yet, Capcom somehow managed to take the saddest parts of 1-4, 1-5, 2-4, and 3-5, and put them all together as one unholy conglomeration of sadness. Just try to make it through the entire case without shedding a single tear. I dare you. Now, please excuse me while I go cry in the corner.
David Guthary Late reply, but I definitely thought Farewell, My Turnabout was more intense than dark. The darkest one IMO was Rise From the Ashes because of the serial killings, the execution based on purely false evidence without Edgeworth even knowing about it and Gant's puppet master-self.
Klemen Kekec While I agree that there are dark elements of Rise from the Ashes, the same can be said of every case in the series, especially considering that each case involves at least one death and usually has some sort of tragic backstory. What I think makes Farewell, My Turnabout and Turnabout for Tomorrow darker is the constantly present *threat* of a main character's imminent death. And then there's that one image of Athena and the implications behind it.... I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
David Guthary True, but I find the backstory and the backstory of the backstory just so much more dark, because of the psychopathic Joe Darke who just went on an insane killing spree, then the whole stormy office incident with the blue badger flash and the armor impale.
David Guthary I think the darkest case involved that one girl whose sister died. Iney Miney or something like that. She had plastic surgery to look like her sister who died in a car accident.
The life poor Athena lead.. Everytime I see Widget turn completely black and see her empty, hurt stare.. I feel like someone should've been there to save her.. Then I feel bad for not being that person..
That's likely the very scene that got the game an M rating. . . . . . Sure, Ace Attorney has shown grizzly scenes before. But a little child covered in her mom's blood with a smile on her face saying how she's going to fix her? That's dark stuff.
Not only you. Everyone was just as shocked as blackquill and we all were just thinking like he did "Something cant be right." but he couldnt do anything to help so he sacrificed myself for Athena
Phoenix: I'm not... But this...! (I-I can't give up now! I have to say something, anything, even if it's a bluff! I've always managed to pull through that way in the past! I have to make it work!) The defense is, uh, prepared to... present evidence... Athena: ...Mr. Wright. Phoenix: Y-Yes, Athena? Athena: It's... okay. You can stop now...
*SPOILERS* "Please! You have to listen to me! He didn't kill her! His heart is screaming that he didn't kill her!" Even now, every time I stand in a courtroom, it comes back to haunt me. Not being heard, no matter how hard you try... Feeling so helpless... Caught in people's stares, so scared that it feels like your chest is in a vise... I'm terrified of courtrooms. I want to run out of that door even now! ... ...This day has finally come. The day I've been looking forward to with all my heart. This is why I became a lawyer. This is why I studied psychology. It was all to save you from this false conviction. ... The only thing that matters is the truth. It's my duty to find out what that truth is. Simon, please give me this chance! The chance to shake off this fear that's been with me for seven years and to face the truth!
Phoenix, Miles, Apollo, Klavier, Athena, Simon, Mia, Godot... And so many more characters who sacrificed so much and fought so hard to find the truth! ... Makes you want to join the ranks, doesn't it? :') Maybe, one day, we can really have a world like this...
Recall how there have only been two characters with Black Pysche Locks in the series: -Kristoph Gavin -Athena Cykes It takes some doing to have those locks. For Kristoph, it was unhealthy paranoia. For Athena, it was doubt that she didn't kill her mother. You take apart both of their locks (even if with Kristoph you never get the confirmation, his breakdown will suffice).
@@justscrollinginthecomments7930 That's not implied. Memory loss doesn't mean black psyche locks. She doesn't remember because of memory loss, not because of repressed trauma. And she slowly starts to remember during the case, with trickles of memories every now and then. Edit: Masters doesn't have them either. It's not something everyone gets just because they've experienced something bad after all. Or everyone would have them in this series
@@l.n.3372 With Masters and Kay both of them have extreme trauma from their individual cases. For Kay it's intense pain when it comes to remembering small details (after seeing her breakdown at the end of the case, it's fair to say she could have had them). For Masters it's having his willpower completely shattered once he is convicted. In hindsight, I'd say Masters probably didn't have any, but for Kay the argument can be made either way. Also I'm not implying everyone who has something terrible happen to them gains Black Psyche Locks, this obviously isn't the case since we play as Phoenix through the OT and not a single person has them (at least in JFA and T&T).
@@justscrollinginthecomments7930 Yeah but Kay didn't have anything to hide. Athena's black locks came from her fear that she killed her mother because her trauma caused her to repressed her memories of the true masked killer she encountered. Kay by contrast knows from the start that a red coat figure pushed her. She only doubted herself because Blaise keeps saying that she's the killer; Kay herself doesn't have much reasons to think she is bad. She basically confessed to spare Edgeworth the pain of losing his own badge.
@Elliot Downey Sheesh, theres so many things going on here. Getting a comment/correction on a comment I made 5 years ago that I long forgot about. Me misreading the comment and thinking they meant AA1 and not DD, and finally misspelling Incident lmao.
That Part where It almost feels like your only option is to give up, you tried everything you Exposed some contradictions only for them to be explained with ease. And then Blackquill Who has been carrying all that false guilt on himself only to see that its all have been for nothing. And then one simple slip of a tongue managed to Save you.
Those past 7 years were definitely hard on Athena, Simon and even Aura. Glad to know that the cases have been resolved and The Phantom locked up behind cages. Well, time to go back to my pillow fortress and cry myself to sleep.
@@jakestate2353 I guess, he's a lucky bastard and he managed to survive, although he's going to have the issues with his identity. It's going to take him a while. It's going to be tough for one without a name, even a face.
This dark version of Athena's otherwise happy and peppy theme. Those feels. Though I honestly didn't think that Athena accidentally killed her mother because the only reason she'd put her mother on the repair station was because her mother was bleeding after being stabbed. If her mom was doing okay at that time, why the heck would Athena put her in the repair station? And there wasn't any blood on the drills and repair tools right?
Young Athena will haunt me forever... This was the most heart wrenching case ever... And the worst is that this actually could happen in real life... *shudders* poor poor Athena... Ps. This song didn't help... It made the feeling worse.
this song saved my life my niece is terrible with naps and sleeping at night she screams like an honest to god BANSHEE no one can ever get sleep but one time I was playing the last trial of DD while trying to put her down with my headphones out since I figured the monotony of the text sound and the screen tapping would calm her down (which it did) and when this song played as Athena relayed the testimony she remembered, she immediately started to doze. when the song finished she was up and at em again until I played it again. she was out like a light in 2 plays and it's worked like a charm ever since
I always thought this music would be a perfect lullaby and even listened to it sometimes when trying to sleep myself, so I'm really happy to read this.
Awesome ost. Blackquil was great. Anyone got the GoDot feeling back from trials and tribulations when he tried to protect maya? Gotta love the ace attorney prosecuttors. That three way objection finger pointing stance was epic. Though we never got to see the "phantom's" face.
Михаил Литвиненко i know but IMO that was the most justified murder (not really...) I'm currently replaying TT and damn is Godot awesome. in the furio tigre case, he's so fucking cool. Lol i'm looking forward for it. phantom could be an interesting character.
Михаил Литвиненко yeah... that's why i said "(not really...)" i know he was guilty but damn, that bitch (Dahlia) had it coming and fucking deserved all of it... i'm as a matter drinking dark coffee (is 7:00 am right now, and i'm getting ready to go to class xD) and i think is my 17th blend... xD
Михаил Литвиненко Sadly, they will do no such thing. Gyakuten Saiban 6/Ace Attorney 6 takes place in the far past. It revolves around one of Phoenix Wright's ancestors.
I cried when Athena's past was revealed and I cried when Apollo's best friend was murdered, especially since he doesn't know who his own killer is. I just. . .I can't. . .Apollo, Clay, Athena. . .
This case really took the M rating to as much potential as possible, and it worked amazingly well. This is a traumatic, touching, and thrilling case. Man, did Athena's true story make me bawl like a bitch. :'(
Don't see this mentioned in the comments so I'll do it. I like how this theme is a rendition of Athena Cykes - Let's Do This! It may not be very noticeable at the beginning but when you reach 0:30 you can definitely hear it.
I felt devastated after thinking about the possibility of Ms Athena killing her own mother. If it was soulbreaking to blame Mr Diego for the murder of Ms Misty, then imagine the pain of trying to do this to one of the main characters of the franchise.
Just realized this is a slowed down version of Courtroom Revolutionnaire. Everyone's probably realized that, but I'm not scrolling down to the comments and spoiling the game for myself.
Nice Nagito Sprite picture. :3 (And this song and where it plays in the game will always be incredibly sad no matter what, so we might as well bask in the sadness while we're here. Haha.)
@@88Dolfan i feel like wandering hearts while emotionally heartbreaking has some semblance of hope within it, but here it feels like your stuck in this sadness forever
Despair... is truly the worst emotion one can feel. You feel like there is nothing you can do, that everything is lost, that you failed and that you can't fix this. You feel lile you falied on everyone that was counting on you. Despair is Fear's ultimate form, its a maximized version of al the thoughts that you can feel while in a state of Fear. For me, watching Athena hold her arms and how Widget and her eyes turn black, was frightening. You could see that in those times, all hope was lost, not even a spark of hope remained in those deep, black eyes.
Somehow that never occured to me [spoiler, I guess] There is only one time Athena *acutally* cried ... and it was at the very end of the game, when it was all over.
Honestly, I think young Athena’s smile during the Mood Matrix segment is even more chilling with the true context. It’s not the smile of a deranged kid who’s tired of being a test subject for her mother, and lashed out in cold revenge. It’s the desperate smile of a child who’s lost her only parent figure, and is trying to cling to the futile hope that her dear mother can be brought back to life.
I didn't even notice that this song was a slower version of Athena's Objection theme until I heard it in-game. I really felt bad for her sad childhood events.
Keya Aghaei Fire carves scars Was the saddest one imo. The case is entirely depressing, and the sister's past is full tragedy , just thinking about living half of her life as someone else.....
This is such a sad song- I'd be perfect to play every time someone is hurt and they do the thousand-yard stare (like the one Athena did in that dream thing- just staring at all the blood, eyes all wide and blank, or in fear in court). And then speak in a soft, flat tone like " I'm..fine. I'm...fine, really."
Never in my life did I cry as hard as I did when I played this game. Case 5 solidified Athena as my favorite character. Single-handedly, this girl watched her mother die, her surrogate older brother get arrested to protect her, and had to live with the supposed guilt of committing the crime for 7 years. Yet through all of that, she somehow manages to smile. Of course, I knew that Athena was innocent the whole time...or at least, that's what I had to tell myself. And thank heavens I was right.
Thank you, I was searching for this theme. It's just so emotional... Athena's story really touched me. I also like how this is basically a sad arrangement of her Objection theme. Gotta love Athena. I wouldn't complain if they did an Ace Attorney: Athena Cykes game someday.
Me either. Or an AAI Simon-themed spin-off with Athena as his rival or assistant (I mean, he did go to bat for her, so why not a game where she helps the other side? A good psychologist and lawyer should have understanding of both sides of the coin, no?)
Steel Samourai reminiscence, Courtroom Révolutionnaire reminiscence. Why do they have to make so depressing versions of the happiest songs of the game ? *sobs*
Yes, I'm really agree with you. But because of the same reason, I'm really angry with Miles in this case. Out of all of the cast, Miles should be the one who really understand Athena's situation, and understand her feelings. At least, he should think about, maybe Athena really is innocent... Maybe Athena been pushed to think that she killed her mother, like when he think that he killed his own father. But Miles really push Athena to the Edge, and really accusing her of Matricide. I know it's his Job as a Prosecutor to make the defendant admit their guilt, but can't he think a better way to find the truth ? O well, sorry for a really long rant... I don't hate Miles, actually he is one of my fave character. It's just in this case, I really can't accept what he did to Athena... Especially, since he should be the one who really understand her situation...
@@rigelothello709 the way I understood it is: he knew athena wasnt going to go to jail either way, she'd just get rehabilitated, and he was absolutely convinced that she was the culprit (I dont blame him, the phantom's plan was insane and the evidence made it extremely likely), so he was just mad at phoenix for prolonging her suffering, he wanted to end it quick so that she would receive her care and be back along her way
@@Trep3 Yeah, The Phantom plan is indeed insane, and if Phoenix isn't thinking out of the Box, maybe he himself will never exposed the plan. I can understand your point, but I just hope Edgeworth can think that he himself ever almost in the same situation as Athena (especially when he think that he murdered his own father, but it's actually a trap by Manfred). But yeah, you've got a point.
I love Athena‘s theme, but this made me tear up so much,,,, one of my favourite reminiscence themes with the DL-6, IS-7 and SL-9 ones. it’s simple, but awesome
This is beautiful. It's just like in JFA with the Steel Samurai song slowed down. I just want to cry hearing this version, compared to her regular objection theme.
Godot lost Mia (his lover) and a couple of years of his life, he met with Misty And Iris, and made a plan to protect Maya, to him he thought that he had to protect Maya because he wasn't there when Mia died, but he also questioned if his drive was because he really wanted to protecr Maya or just to salvage his soul. In the end Maya believed in Him (And so do I) Simon lost his mentor and decided to protect Athena and lost 7 years of his life. Both Characters are great in my opinion but Godot's story has more depth and tragedy and I prefer it. But again, both Characters are very similar and are good people in my opinion.
SpeedyCord Godot’s story has more tragedy? Simon was going to /die./ The only reason it only lasted seven years is because Athena, Edgeworth, and Phoenix put an end to his execution. If The Phantom had his way, Blackquill would have died for Athena.
Up to this case the game has been pretty soft with the cases, nothing like Acro or Mimi pasts. Then it hits you like a truck in the last case worse than DL-6. as sad as realizing of Apollo's dad plan.
"Something's wrong with Mom, so I'm taking her apart to fix her!" You don't know how deep this word is, It's very deep. Very deep... You know your face have bloods, right? And it's your mother's blood. She loves you, but she always use the wrong way to love. Athena, You're not the murderer.
