Join me as I take my WR250R on a quick dual sport motorcycle camping adventure where I spend the night camping in Sam Houston National Forest at the Kelly's Pond Campground and have a blast riding the off-road / dirtbike trails they have to offer.

Thanks for watching and for the kind words. Glad to hear that you will be hitting the trails soon. Be sure to check the status by calling 936-344-6205. Don't rely on the website as it is not updated regularly so isn't always up to date. Have fun.

Yeah, the National Forest does a good job with them and since they are the only public trails in a pretty wide radius, they get quite a bit of use which helps keep them in good shape also.

Ted, thanks for watching and commenting. Have fun riding SHNF. Remember to call and get a trail status before you go. You don't want to make the drive and then be turned away by the rangers. It happened to me once. Total bummer.

great video! I am wondering if there is some "trail" not "too hard" for a BMW 750GS .. over there any advice ?
@wanderbynature2508
@wanderbynature2508 Год назад
It all depends on how well you can ride the bike. None of these trails are tight since they are wide enough for ATV's and there isn't anything real technical. So, although the 750 is a big bike for trails, if you are pretty comfortable on your 750, you should be OK.

Thank you for this. It made my hubby super excited. He moved out here to Houston from So Cal and has been lamenting about finding a good place to ride off-road. Would you say this is a good trail for a mountain bike or are there too many motorcycles for it to be safe? I personally prefer human powered 2-wheeled vehicles, but it would be cool if we found a spot that both of us could enjoy with our preferred 2-wheelers of choice.
@wanderbynature2508
@wanderbynature2508 2 года назад
Mendyviola, thanks for watching and commenting. I also love to mountain bike and there are lots of good places to ride around Houston. As for these trails, you would probably be OK but need to really pay attention for motorcycles and ATV's. I would not assume that they will be looking out for a mountain biker.

Thinking of getting a dual sport. What is the est gas mileage you’re getting? Only important because I live In West Texas. Trying to figure out routes, extras, and all the fun stuff.
@wanderbynature2508
@wanderbynature2508 4 года назад
Samy B, thanks for watching. When I'm just playing around I get 60-70 mpg. If I'm riding pretty hard, it drops a bit. But, I get my worst gas mileage if I try to do highway speeds around 70-75 mpg. Then the mpg drops to 40 or 45. Also, the WR fuel tank is just a hair over 2 gallons so has a max range somewhere in the neighborhood of 120 miles but to be honest, I start to get nervous when I approach 100 miles. Hope that helps. Good luck with your upcoming purchase.

@wanderbynature2508
@wanderbynature2508 3 года назад
Urban Acres, thanks for watching. Yes, you can use ATV's. I think their might be a 50" wide limit but you can double check that with the Forest Service. I would also recommend that you call them first to make sure the trails are open. I wouldn't rely on the status posted on the website as it is not always current.

Beau, thanks or watching and commenting. You are right, you have to watch out for everyone when you're on a bike because they're not looking out for you. For that very reason, I took mostly backroads. Mostly FM 149 which is pretty nice. Definitely not I-45. At least not on that bike.

Thanks for watching and for the kind words. For luggage I use a set of DrySpec D20 (20 liter) waterproof saddle bags (no frame needed) in combination with a Medium Wolfman Expedition Dry Duffle on the tail rack. You can see the luggage and what I carry on my video at this link - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F0xYaDtXKSg.html. Hey Wander by Nature, thanks for your reply and link. Travelling light is key on these smaller bikes. I hope to have a similar set up and also carry a 1 gallon rotopak for extra fuel on the tail rack. But will get a 3 gallon IMS tank one day. Cheers

Awesome Awesome video What was your reasoning for going with the Yamaha WR250R? Did you consider the CRF450L? I'm have a lil dilemma of picking 1 over the other....thanks in advance I just subscribed as well
@wanderbynature2508
@wanderbynature2508 4 года назад
Thanks for the kind words and for subscribing. I went with the 250 for a few reasons. They are easier to find used and there are a lot of aftermarket accessories available but the biggest reason I went with the 250 is because of the more forgiving maintenance schedule and their rep of being absolutely bombproof and not needing much in the way of repairs. It needs an oil change every 3,000 miles and the valves checked at 26,000 miles. From the little bit of research I have done on the 450 it looks to have an MSRP somewhere around $10K which makes it quite a bit more expensive than the 250 and I think it needs the oil changed somewhere around 1,000 miles and valves need to be checked at 6,000 miles. However, with all of that said, I realistically won't put more than a few thousand miles a year on this bike so changing the oil twice a year and having the valves checked and adjusted every few years probably wouldn't be that bad. I'm very happy with the 250 and have a lot of fun riding it but if the Honda 450 has a maintenance schedule that you can live with and you enjoy the extra power and the way it rides both off and on road and can afford the extra $$, I would go with the bigger bike.

There is an honor box at the trailhead. There are envelopes with a tear off tag. You fill out your info. (name, date, etc.), put the money in the envelope, seal it, tear off the tag to keep with you, and put the envelope in the honor box.

@wanderbynature2508 4 года назад
I am running stock tires that I will be replacing soon. I also noticed my knees seemed a bit high up in the video but I didn't feel compressed or awkward when I was riding. I think one problem is that I am 6'2" but pushing 230 pounds so am compressing the spring a bit too much. I need to either lose some weight or adjust my spring or maybe a bit of both.

Thanks for the comments and for the riding tip. I think the GoPro camera makes it look like I'm going harder than I really am. Also, it's sometimes hard to tell when I'm standing especially with the chinbar camera mount. But I will remember that tip next time I ride.
