Dual-System Sound: From Set to Post with Tentacle Sync
This is a guaranteed approach to streamlining your production and post-production workflow!
If you record dual-system sound, where the audio is recorded separately from the video, how do you sync those files in post? The manual approach can take a very long time, and automatic methods are not always accurate.
Learn how to magically sync your media using timecode with Tentacle Sync!
Tentacle Sync devices can send both LTC (audio) timecode and SMPTE timecode to cameras and sound recorders, and Tentacle Sync Studio can sync both forms of timecode, even if the source originated from a different manufacturer's device.
Watch this tutorial to learn all about the Tentacle Sync ecosystem, and how to work with synced media in Final Cut Pro X.

For the two individuals who gave this tutorial a thumbs down. If for nothing else but the time that it took to put this video together you should be grateful. Who watches a 24min video all the through just to give it a bad review. Its because of channels like this that some of us even have knowledge pertaining to video production, which allows for some of us to be able to acquire jobs, whether freelance or corporate. Why hate or put down those who are only trying to give back. We rather tare down more than to build up. This simple but intuitive video would have cost you $$$$ in a classroom setting or off the shelf of some book store written by God knows who. But we give no acknowledgement to those who invest their time to give back freely. Some people logic and reasoning will never cease to baffle me.

Looked at a lot of videos trying to understand how to set up a few cameras and Logic pro x for sound in my studio and this is the only clip that explains everything that I've been trying to understand. Thanks so much.

best in-depth video explanation of the tentacle sync E system. I have been using them for almost 16 months now as a sound guy but never bothered digging deeper on how do they sync in post. Lucky me I am using the best way, meaning equipment with dedicated TC inputs and outputs.

Great video but why wouldn't you connect the tentacle to BNC/TC IN the Sony Fs7 instead of an audio input?? Maybe you didn't have that cable???

Great video! A very clear and thorough explanation for using timecode. I’ve been using SMPTE exclusively but now am confident to use LTC. Thanks Gabe!

Thank you for watching and commenting! I (Gabriel) felt a bit robotic on camera as I’m used to chatting with Felipe, but as long as I communicated the message properly that’s all that matters.

I (Gabriel) just picked up a Track E myself. It’s a wonderful tool. The only thing that makes me nervous is the inability to monitor unwanted sounds like the mic rubbing against clothing, as 32-bit float can’t fix that. I’ve had good experience using Rycote under covers, but there’s always a risk.

Great job on this! I'm trying to figure out a timecode workflow so videos like this are super helpful. Thanks :) The Tentacle Sync E does look like a great option. Having that scratch audio and being able to do LTC sync is good. I'll be using basic cameras that would need the LTC method and some type of lapel plus audio recorder like the new Zoom F2 that can apparently handle timecode. Tentacle has the new Track E, but it is mono so I'd prefer the Zoom F2 to be used with a dual head lapel mic. I'm guessing I can just "jam" the timecode into the Zoom F2, but their manual on the device is sparse. Guess I'll wait until more information comes out. Anyways, thanks for making videos like this!

Amazing tutorial. I am using a tentacle sync-e with two Instamics and a gopro. But have mostly failed so far. Have echo when two subjects are close together.

If only FCPx would use LTC, it would solve a lot of problems. As a future wedding videographer, I need to find a way to use the Tentacle Sync with a TASCAM DR-10L (maybe an audio splitter on the line in?)

Using timecode in final cut pro x, would I be able to batch sync all my single camera video clips with their respective audio file? Because using the audio sync, I have to do them one by one. Its not a problem with multi-camera because everything is synced into 1 multi-cam clip. But can I get individual synced clips without having to do them one by one?

Hello, for a long shoot is it better to not shut off the tentacle sync(s)? Or is it recommended to leave on all day to have the same time code? Thank you - just confused about if you shut them off and turn back on does it change the time code for editing process.
@gabrielspaulding4830

Good question. When fully charged the Tentacle Sync units should easily last an entire day. If you decide to turn them off to save battery life you will need to re-sync them after you turn them back on (this only takes a few seconds). However, because they use time of day timecode when you start shooting again the timecode will continue as normal -if you shut them off for an hour long lunch break in post you will clearly see the timecode reflect that missing hour. Put another way, if the last timecode before shutting them off was 01:15:30:10, when you come back from that hour long lunch break they won't continue from 01:15:30:10 they will start with 02:15:30:10. Hope that makes sense.

This does make sense, thank you - I’m happy to know that when using this I will always make sure to keep Time of Day and not let me OCD make me start at 0 - unless I want to re-sync every time I turn off. This is what I think you mean. Thank you for the quick reply! And sorry for all the questions
