FOLLOWUP: This board has HORRIBLE noise floor and here's how to fix it: • Dual TPA3116 board: Fi...
Some off-hand measurements and hacks on one of the dual TPA3116 boards available for the Breeze Audio chassis.
The performance of the board seems to be generally acceptable, but the low-pass filter for the subwoofer output has a very silly filter topology, making it somewhat useless in its standard issue. I take the time to change it around a bit to make it better.

i was planing to purchase one of these boards, but now i wont. That Subwoofer Filter does not meet my requirements. Thank you Sir for your excellent investigative work here! :-)

Hi, thanks for your review, can you kindly inform me how to shift the crossover to 100 Hz.

Hello, thanks for the helpful video, I have some questions. My dual 3116 sounds like playing music through the walkie-talkie 1. My dual-chip board has the resistors in the same order, does it means they are both masters? 2. I have watched the other video of yours about reducing the gain, so instead of swapping the resistors, I should just follow the sheet right? which says: Master 20 dB 5.6 kΩ OPEN Slave 20 dB 51 kΩ 51 kΩ I am sorry, I have no knowledge about electronics, I would be really grateful if you could get your answer, thank you a lot!

Hello where do you find all the capacitors you use to upgrade. I cannot find the mini box polyester ones.
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 8 лет назад
Most of my components are from Mouser, found using the power of parametric search.
@benniehanas

OK, I checked mouser and found them, I now have the question that since we are improving sound quality, is there specific capacitors I can use which are better than others. So far I have only worked with foil caps for crossovers, but not anything regarding amps, so this is my first AMP project.

benniehanas Generally, you just want to steer clear of ceramics and electrolytics in the signal chain if possible.

I have a similar board powering a 10" passive sub and two 6" woofers in my bathroom. It sounds decent

(I think) I've decoded the filter circuit. It's harder to look at it until we rearrange our own sketch... (dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33246424/Esquema%20TDA3116D2.pdf) The first two op amp are feeding bass pot (stereo input buffer, not in the linked PDF), and from there a mono signal is sent to a 2nd order Sallen-Key low pass filter (one op amp). The other op amp (2b is my schematic) is a virtual ground provider. From the calculations (sim.okawa-denshi.jp/en/OPseikiLowkeisan.htm) this gives a 107Hz cut out frequency (R1=R2=10Kohm, C1= 220nF and C2=100nF). This is not consistent with your measurements and it would be great if someone could took a look at it. I'm not sure virtual ground is well implement or if I get the circuit right.

Nice job, I might look into it in more if I have the time. As far as my measurements go, there might be something playing up with the low input impedance of the TPA3116 as well as the large amounts of 1 µF caps they've used to AC couple everything.
@jopereirapt
@jopereirapt 8 лет назад
It would be VERY nice of you :) Those 2x1uF you also changed (near rear end op amp) are the last two on my schematic and (I think) they attack the bass IC directly (haven't remove heatsink yet). They certainly could extend bass respond (TI recomends if a flat bass response is required down to 20 Hz the recommended cut-off frequency is a tenth of that, 2 Hz, so more is always better!).

For those you may need to change their boards further, I'm posting part of the schematic (dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33246424/TDA3116%202.1%20Original.png). I correct myself about op amp 2b - that's not a virtual ground provider but an inverter (2x gain) that attacks "-" input of sub IC. To get tighter bass control I will change original 100nF cap with a 220nF and add a cap in parallel to R8 to provide an additional order to low pass filter (making it an 3r order low-pass filter). I also changed my sub IC gain to 36dB while making it a slave (100k+15k) and we can further rise the sub gain by reducing R7 (3.3K or 2.2K). I made this not because I like lots of bass but, since all my speakers are all 4ohm, I can get the correct bass intensity without lowering stereo volume (least noise possible). Here are the simulations I've made: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33246424/TPA3116D2%202.1.png

I believe the second amp for the sub bass should be left as stereo and use a dual voice coil sub.
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 6 лет назад
Doesn't make a difference, the amps see the same load.

personally i disagree with your choice for the filter, it should have a good range from 70 to 150 hz ish, its useless that low with the power it produces, as was intended by design
@FFcossag

+Jamie Earp It's generally accepted among audio enthusiasts that subwoofers should cut off at around 80 to 100 Hz at most. Frequencies above that should ideally be produced by the satellite speakers in stereo, since your ears are able to detect the direction the sound is coming from. That said, these parameters depend entirely on the kind of system you're driving.

I like the triple knob system, you can set a volume, and then adjust the sound, as you might want 50% bass volume, and still have 0-100% on the mid/high, or the other way around is more likely, but.. I like it :)

Here's some info that might be helpful as far as the crossover used in this style amp. (techtalk.parts-express.com/forum/tech-talk-forum/60927-opinions-regarding-ebay-yuanjing-2-1-amplifier-board-anybody-tried-it?p=1290800#post1290800)

You are suposed to put 2ohm load on PBTL output! Not 8!
@FFcossag
@FFcossag 7 лет назад
That depends on how it's configured, but the fact that it's able to drive impedances that low does not translate into that being the only impedance it can drive. You don't see much gain from PBTL in 8 Ohm operation, though. It is kind of pointless.

Just received the amplifier from Aliexpress. 6ohm 60w 3-way speakers + 4ohm 300W RMS 300mm (12") subwoofer (Clarion WG3020) Doing some tests and I have noticed the LR Potentiometer at a certain point gives a treble boost. Might be my imagination. Main power cap is a Rubycon and the others are not any brand I recognise, so I might upgrade them. Doing all the mods I can find on the internet + checking the official schematic to see if the output filter has an EMI C-RC Snubber.
@StickySli
@StickySli 7 лет назад
UPDATE: Upgraded potentiometers, opamps to OPA2604AP, all 1uf caps to Vishay low-ESR and noise floor dropped considerably; I left the other caps because I was able to find the brands online and they are reputable and they all are 2000+h rated 105ºC and low-ESR. Didn't add an EMI Snubber because the board already has them in every speaker output wired like the schematic says. Finally lowered the stereo gain to 20db to have minimum noise floor but i think it's overkill. The most important thing was making a ground loop isolator. Used some cheap "10PCS Audio Transformers EI14" from Banggood.com . I have tested them with my ear and they work down to 5hz. The last thing I'd modify is the subwoofer low pass filter. I can definitely hear midbass in the sub and I don't like that. Any recommendations anyone for which values to use?

Hmmmmmmm, a whole nation that is incompetent, rather than the designer it this board.

Well he didn`t say "china`s incompetence" he said "chinese incompetence", so he wasn`t in fact judging an entire nation. They do have some weird quirks now and then, but you can`t really expect more for the prices you pay either, so..

As an American, that just grinds my gears. Why can't they just cut their engineers budgets in half, and get workers paid less than half of the dirt they get paid right now in order to get me better things for an even cheaper price. I am entitled to get German engineering, and quality control at a 25th of the price damn it.
