Bill is amazing. He restored my 1229 a few years ago. He will talk you through the entire process. You cannot find a better more personal hands on person anywhere. So nice to see him sharing his passion with you in this interview.

I remember in the late 60s and early 70s a lot of Hi-Fi stores had their own service departments. Those that sold Dual also had a large supply of Dual parts on hand. You could replace a tone arm a counter weight, an idler wheel or the screws. And they could service them in shop. I still have a Dual 1209 from 1969. Even their base models were well built.

What a fantastic video. I love this type of video. Bill was so interesting to listen to. His passion for Dual is refreshing. What a wealth of information. I would much rather spend the money to get a very nice Dual than spend an equal amount on a new design turntable. The vintage equipment has just such a high level of quality, fit and finish. When you think about it, you can build an amazing vintage system for a lot less than a modern system and one that will last for years.

Thanks so much for this interview. Love to see Bill's dedication to the craft. I was able to finally acquire the original Dual 1219 that was my childhood introduction into the audiophile hobby. TL/DR, this was my father's purchase back when I was a pre-teen, and after his death in the late 80's it sat in storage. Case and chassis are pristine, and dust cover is intact, but I've been dreading having to have this serviced and have only done surface cleaning and have not powered on to test. I'll definitely be having Bill's team do the service on this unit, I just want to see it properly set up and operational again, even though it will not be my primary turntable. - After thinking, had to add, maybe it will be my primary. Hope it's as good as I remember.

He learned it all himself. He's particularly mechanically inclined, so he mastered it because he enjoyed the challenge. I'm an electronics guy, & he's right that us Electronics & Mechanics guys aren't made of quite the same stuff. But I've spent the last few months running around fattening up my Dual collection; for the express purpose of learning how to fix them because nobody else really wants to! And IF, never mind WHEN, I acquire a certain degree of knowledge & proficiency servicing them, I will want to make my services available to the public at large. But not before! There's plenty of "hackers" out there, & I refuse to be one of them, taking people's money! A close friend recommended this video to me, thought I might find it educational or at least entertaining. Fortunately, Kevin & Bill did a wonderful job of making it both those things. I'm not naturally mechanically inclined by nature. But I love these strange & wonderful Squarehead cuckoo-clock turntables with their Rube Goldberg mechanisms, so I will persevere. Wish me luck!🤞

In 1971 as a high-schooler I had my heart set on the new Garrard Zero-One Hundred Tangential Tracking Turntable. The salesperson at my favorite St. Louis area audio shop (the aptly named Hi Fi Fo Fum, which only just closed its doors a few years ago) talked me out of the Garrard in favor of a Dual 1219 with Shure phono cartridge. I'm forever grateful to that salesperson, and wish I still had that turntable today. Thanks for this great conversation.

That was the same story my dad had in 1971. Decision decisions. My Dad did not get a 1219, but a 1215S. I still have his table among my 10 Duals. Plus I bought a used1216 like his, in 1980. I have my Dads Both serviced by Bill and still going strong.

I've been to HiFi Fo Fum! My cousin used to live in the St. L area and whenever I visited we would go. I loved the LOOK of the Zero-100 but never bought one. Those needed a lot of maintenance over the long haul to keep working. Duals always seemed elegantly simple.

My first "real" turntable was the CS701 with the Shure V15 later I had an EMT TSD 15 complete with shell glued into the arm it worked and sounded great! Thanks for the interview and feeling the kinship with Bill.

Great discussion. I learned a lot about my Dual 1019, which was my first turntable bought in 1969 as a student. Everything Bill said about the 10 series happened to mine. I had the optional 45 auto changer spindle that eventually screwed up the changer mechanism. I also stacked albums without knowing that it was verboten! The UA base came apart at the corners and I moved on to a Technics that is still going today with my son and grandson. Vinyl is back and so is the turntable and Dynaco A25's I bought in 1971.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to apprentice for these guys. Hell as a semi retired guy at 55 who loves all this stuff, and owned much of it in the 70's. The passion has to cut both directions. The desire to pass on the skills must exist also. Even if it takes years to find the right guy.

Duals are fascinating decks because mechanically they bear some hallmarks of lower end decks like record changers and yet they run like Swiss clocks, have very good specs and sonically are up there with some much more expensive turntables. I have just spent a year slowly nursing a sick 505-1 back to health. It took so long partly because I never wanted to disconnect it to go on the bench as I was enjoying the music too much!

Not talk about something that cost $10,000 and its the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not everyone has a budget to buy that kind of gear. I deal alot of 70s type gear. Love this informative interview, Mr Neumann is an awesome and very detailed patient soul this has been very enjoyable and eye opening. Something you and Mr Neumann discussed confirmed a lesson I learned 2 months ago after having to tear down 2 Technics sl 1300mkii turntables, about the humming being also a symptom or issue with audio path/ patch cables. I found this out replaced RCAs had a humming and changed to better connects and humming issue was gone! Thanks 🙏🏽 enjoyed this interview. Also I learned from this segment about the old shure v15type iii as I have access to three I’ve noticed a difference with one of them in sound this may have answered the mystery!👍🏽👍🏽🔥🔥🔥

Really enjoyed this. I own a few Duals, 604, 1019, 1218, 1219 and 1229. It's nice to hear him share his appreciation for Dual brand turntable. Many audio snobs don't appreciate these and tend to dismiss them. too bad for them! I'm with Bill, I'm sold on them!

@@hurkamur1 I have a tough time settling between the 1019 and the 1229. Both of the ones I own are really good sounding and good looking with nice plinths. They compete for a place in my home office. I live close to a busy contry road and when heavy trucks pass by, the whole house shakes and sometimes affect the playing (skips). I find the 1019 to be a better tracker.

Wonderful video, Kevin and Bill! My CS 406 is still going strong after 43 years. And now, I am motivated to get all my other 8 or 9 Duals in rotation again! Particularly my CS 7000 Golden One. Cheers!

Ortofon blue on my 1219. I remember watching that episode of Vinyl and thinking "THAT'S MY DUAL"! I'm the same as Bill every time I see a bike from the wrong timeframe on a film.

I was amused by the Thorens story using the Disc Washer. I have owned Thorens turntables for over 40 years and have always used Disc Washer. I learned right from the start that no pressure is needed. Very entertaining story, I enjoyed watching this video.
