Great information. A Hot Shotter would be nuts to get all the bells and whistles and then put 100K miles a year on. I like the STX at $60K sounds like a great value.
If you get the opportunity, can you do this video with RAM and also GM. You did a great job and knowing the differences within the brand helps when buying.

Another thing to consider when buying a chassis cab you will not be getting the 475 hp diesel its been derated severely, sometimes a pickup truck bed delete is a better option on the F350’s

I had an old flat bed as a extra vehicle. I loved it. I didn't care about the paint on the steel bed and I could load a sxs atv on the bed. On 18 wheeler's tractor I believe it's called double frame
Thank you for this video. I’m in the market for a new truck to tow my 40ft gooseneck with tractor and a couple of attachments. I didn’t know that there was an actual difference between them in terms of capabilities until now. I’m leaning more towards a single cab or extended cab dually which I’m pretty sure both the 350 and 450 with truck bed would do just fine. A flatbed would be nice though
I wish the big 3 wouldn’t change things engine wise in the chassis cab, I do not feel like the chassis cabs are more reliable, my 450 over heated constantly (16) and my 250 6.7 king ranch never over heated with the same towing loads up the hills where I live. And no ladies and gentlemen the engine difference is not only tuning there are also different components
Jason Larsen nah both our 450 fleet trucks did this with high demand, I honestly don’t believe they do what they do for reliability I believe it’s to save money. The hills my way are a killer but in my opinion I’ve never had a issue with any diesels other than the chassis cab diesels with the same motor
My first-hand experience between standard rear wheel or dually is I highly recommend duallys they ride better 😊 and they are 150% safer when it come too safety with have the dual tires. I love my F350 Powerstroke King Ranch dually 2008 I have the 4:30 gear radio 4wd fully deleted

They probably don't put the "high flow" grille on the chassis cab trucks because they don't make any power. The only thing I don't know if you touched on was the towing capacity variances that go opposite of those payload capacities. Tow ratings favor pickups as much as payload ratings favor chassis cabs.
I can say from experience building service trucks and heavy work trucks for a living those F450-550s will beat you worse than any other make/model. Recently had a 5500 Ram get a 14ft service body with a crane and it felt better on the road than anything. This was while it weighed 19,000lbs empty.

I don't plan on purchasing a truck (especially a modern Powerstorke) at all. I was just curious if the Chassis Cab was wider than the pickup. Video was interesting so I completed it.
Now there you go. You get f550 sale your gorgeous f450 to enjoy the journey that will fix there problem. Because you sold it to them they won’t have to worry about that new fifth wheel they want. Stop with the robust go with much more heavier duty. Love video.
What about warranty issues with the cab and chassis. My dad bought 2 GM 1 TONS in '77 and'80. Paper work stated no warrenty due to not being a complete pick up.
We've tried mounting our aftermarket bodies/lifts on F550's. They have failed miserably. Cracking the frame right behind the cab in testing. Have stopped manufacturing them with Ford chassis. Dodge only going down the assembly line for now.
What kind of lift was it scissor, telescopic ??? Im curious, also what's the possible reason for the cracking isn't there a reinforcement there ??? Thanks
No unless it was just a cobbled together job. The regular trucks have bends in the frame (to where a C&C truck has a flat straight frame) and a wider frame then the C&C trucks. So not only would it have to be shimmed in some spots it would have to be a whole new mount system as well.
Might be a dumb question but can you get a chassis cab F350 with a regular truck bed on it? Would like the extra payload for chassis but still want a regular bed. Thanks for this comparison video. No sir. Unless you completely swap the suspension out, simply adding airbags does not improve the ride quality of a truck. They are designed to level out a load.
@@benjamin-8403 Short of Ford offering an airride cab upgrade there's much that can be done for the unloaded ride quality. But that is a whole new can of worms too. A comercial style seat may be a simpler modification. The Volvo seat that floats front to back is a little odd at first but I do miss it. They would let you tune the seat to your body weight irregardless of the load.
Why are chassis cab rated to tow much less than their pickup truck counterparts? Is this because of different turbos or different certification methods (chassis vs dyno)? For example, the 2014 f350 6.7l drw 4x2 chassis cab is rated to tow 16,100 fifth wheel where as the same pickup truck is rated to tow 23,900 fifth wheel. Will the chassis actually be able to tow 23,900 but it is just certified different because of EPA? Thanks. -Interested 2014 chassis cab owner
With regard to the chassis cab dually grill. Aren’t the chassis cab trucks derated in terms of power? If so, this may explain the SRW style grill. Just doesn’t need the additional air flow or it’s a consumer marketing gimmick to begin with.
How come I can't get a pick up truck bed on an F-350 chassis cab. I talked to a fleet rep for Ford and they say it is different the a pick up truck model. Explain tgat please? To me it looks the same length, the frame is just thicker on the chassis, so I get a better payload , which I need for a heavy truck camper such as a Arctic Fox 1140 which is 5500 pounds fully loaded. I need tge extra GVWR to get a bumper and winch etc. Any thoughts would be appreciated...

The shop where I work has an F550 cab and chassis with a flatbed on it, carries and hauls everything was out on it but does ride like a tank when not loaded
The over engineering of trucks that are supposed to be work vehicles is going to be the death of their reputation. They haven't learned from decades ago when they built things that "on paper" worked but didn't work in the real world. It's like a person that runs on a treadmill that finally hits a real trail and realizes that there is a huge difference between running indoors in a controlled environment and running on rocks and sideway grades, without A/C, Heat, etc..
When I ordered my 2015 F-350 Diesel Dually Platinum with every available upgrade and option, other than the roof, the sticker was over $70K. That was in January of 2015. I didn't receive the truck until the end of March that year. That included the upgraded rear end, 5th. wheel, tow package, camper package, etc., everything that Ford had available at the time. That vehicle was terrible. It was the only time I spent an insane amount of money on a vehicle and the experience has made it that I will probably never do it again. Prior to that I had a 2010 F-150 that was fantastic. The Dually F-350 was in the shop too many times and the electronics seemed to malfunction in the heat. Causing the vehicle to not run. Both rear windows "fell" into the door linings within 3 days of eachother because the truck is designed with what are essentially large rubber bands that hold the glass up. They can snap when your truck is off and parked and it causes the window to just slide down. You can't even slide them up by hand and lock them into place. What a horrible design. The truck was never beaten or pushed too hard and only had 34k miles at 4 1/2 years old when I finally sold it. With the advent of aluminum beds, etc. I have lost my faith in these trucks. The ridiculous 5 1/2 ft. bed on the newer trucks are proof that Ford is catering to the suburban person that wants to be one of the cool kids and not people that use their trucks for work. Sure, you can pay through the nose for a F-350 that does the equivalent of the older F-150's but look at the cost. Hey, I get it, they are catering to the market trends. The problem is that it will (and is) contributing to a decline in quality of their pickup trucks actually being trucks.
I don't believe Ford has put anything further out regarding the F-600 since announcing it. I've been looking for info intermittently and haven't seen anything come out this year.
i got an 04 f350 chassis cab v10 for 5 grand and its setup to pull just under 26000 pounds, as high as it can be before jumping to cdl weight. Mine has somewhere around 11 spirngs on each side. Its got a commercial 5th wheel plate and setup. With no weight in it the ride is not smooth at all lol you can feel every bump in the road but for what i paid i couldnt find anything even close in comparison that could pull the 40ft fifth wheel we have.
Maybe Ford has additional cooling fans for the F-550 and that is why the grills are the same. Plus since those will more than likely be service trucks might see a lot of idle time, so auxiliary cooling fans might make sense. I would have loved to see the interior of the F-350, for me that is a more affordable price keeping a F-350 in the $60K range, everyone is doing reviews on top of the line trucks which some like me don't have $80-100K laying around. Great review, would love to see some more videos of the middle range trim package trucks.
2021 Lance 1172 is new and i just saw the blue print and .... i dont know what to say about it... it looks big... too big to be true, like a bad april fools joke. Could you find one somewhere near you and do a video on it? I want to make sure Im not going crazy here because there is no way a truck bed camper has that much stuff in it.
You missed one very important side note the cab chassis’s are de-tuned somewhere in the 130 horsepower which is a bit. I own a F350 pickup and also a F450 cab chassis it’s noticeable but it still pulls very well.
Very good that's exactly what I was looking for. "F 550 chassis cab". Is there such a version of that WITHOUT the king cab? I need the bare rails as long as possible. All the way up into the area where the king cab is. 🤔

Great video. I bought a 7.3l 2020 f350 drw stx regular cab same as the white pickup. I thought they sold me a chasis cab upfitted with a pickup box bc on my odometer statement it said cab and chasis under "type". Which wasn't what I wanted because of hp difference etc. So i didn't know how to tell the difference until this video. Im pretty sure I have a f350 pickup now. I wish you got under the f350 drw pickup so i can see if the frame looked like mine . I have a 14k gvwr and 7101 payload.
Great Vid JD, Thanks for sharing. Pulled my campers for many years with a f350 7.3 PSD chassis cab. The biggest pains were two things. Getting different springs to make it ride better and then the very limited aftermarket support for chassis cab trucks. Things from exhaust, hitches and flatbeds are harder to find and generally more expensive.
Would love to see a vid about using a dually as a daily driver. I'm retired now...need a new truck but cant afford a new dually and keeping a daily driver. Don't drive as much these days so maybe it would work?
I hate how in the work truck models they come with the clear windows on every window... feels like I’m driving in a fishbowl! I’m a 5% tint kinda guy lol and i would also NEVER get carpet floors in a work truck!

I got a ford 7.3 2wheel drive dually n I got to put air bags in her because the 1161 Lance camper makes her squat a bit more then I like n I also wana pull a small open car hauler behind with the 2 Harleys or 1 vette n she will have her hands full I'm sure n that keeps it right around the 10.000lb mark for it. I LOVE THOSE 550s
What about the wiring for trailer lights and service body or flat bed applications. I think the wiring for a service or flat bed is different from regular bed pickup.
Doesn't the 2016 and older 350/450 pick up truck also have box type frames to the rear of the cab then transition to C channel to the rear of the truck?
With a narrower frame on a C&C, how much less is the distance between the outside rear wheels? My wife doesn’t want a dually because she’ll clip curbs on turns, but maybe not if a C&C is significantly narrower?

I drive a 97 f350 4x4 c n c now replacing my 94 f350 dually that got totaled when a guy ran a light in front of me. The c n c has a 11k gvwr vs the pu had a 10k. In 97 the ford dually pu werent offered as 4x4 but c n c were offered. The pu had like 4 or 5 leafs that were 3 inches wide. My c n c has 12 that are 2 1/4 inches wide. 10 was offered and then a 2 or 4 leaf overload. Mine has 12 plus 4. I put new main leafs and hangers ubolts shackles as one hanger was gone and others not far behind. I pull a 13k pintle and put around 1.5 to 2k tongue wieght (guessing) dont touch overloads. Wanna get a pu camper for when go to tractor shows have to build a custom frame to mount it on my flatbed on my trk
From you experience wld u recommend a c&c or a pu,,,??? To carry brings and dirt on the back , the only issue with the conf is the extra soence of buying a flat utility bed a oh all ready has one Which one do u like more and why?
