Flights were disrupted at Dubai International Airport on Friday after heavy rain and thunderstorms in the Emirates.
The wet weather caused 13 inbound flights to be redirected to other airports, while six outbound flights were cancelled, a representative for Dubai Airports said on Friday.

Scaremongering headline - DUBAI IS NOT SINKING!!!!! The storm started around 2AM and lasted till just after 6AM.. The Police warnings via SMS are normal when storms hit, yes certain areas were affected which happens every year with these storms. Race to Dubai Golf Tournament still went ahead and the majority of people went about their normal working day as did most schools…

Between 1970 to 1975 lived in Dubai, worked in Sharjah and Qatar. Rain was considered to bring good luck. Having the tallest towers in the world creates eddies drawing in moisture from the Gulf in over the desert making the perfect conditions for precipitation. When weather fronts breakdown strong winds result. When high winds and precipitation combine the outcome can be costly for regions such as the UAE. Humidity, of course, is always present day and night. Cloud seeding has it’s place under the right conditions, obviously not in the UAE.

Dubai's infrastructure has not taken floods due to rain, into consideration when town planning was done.There were very few ducts on the sides of roads to channel away the water .

This flooding of the very modern Dubai areas proves once again that large scale concrete constructions on every available land space becomes unscientific as far as rainwater drainage system is concerned. Normally such desert zones did not get heavy rains from olden days, but now because of large scale climate changes everywhere, the dense areas of Middle East too get torrential rains. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and now Dubai, are all prone to such floods regularly because of large scale building constructions all over the land space.😊

Well....in this case yes. If you google it it will state that Dubai is sinking about 5 millimeters/year. Plus those ridiculous man-made islands are sinking back into the seas where they belong. Nakeel, Dubai's largest developer, had to be bailed out of a $25 Billion debt for those island in 2009. It seems that all of Dubai is plagued with improper thinkers with wealth to further intoxicate their lust, passions and appetites.

People in this region are use to sandstorms - not torrential rain, flooding, etc.. I am willing to bet that they're scared to death as to what to do now. Just remember - stay calm and act like you know what to do even if you do not. Fear will cause people to do reckless and dangerous things.

@@yufu9163 It's funny because it was reported that the authorities did not take adequate time to install drainage pipes to help with the flooding. The reports kept talking about rain catching reservoirs. It's also funny that some companies from around Saudi Arabia bought land in the Southwest of the U.S. in order to grow food that could not grow in the Middle East without ample supplies of water. The amount of water this company was using to grow their crops was staggering to the point where the state government had to end their farming because their water usage was affecting neighboring areas. With all this water from the flooding, they need to take full advantage of it before it disappears into the ground or sea.

I'm thinking a lot of desert cities probably don't handle heavy rain too well. Maybe desert terrain just makes handling water difficult, or the planners just figure it's not important to be able to deal with something that happens so rarely. I live in Amarillo and we get floods when it rains hard too.

Dubai city need to build a flood control disaster prevention underground temple tunnel which Tokyo Japan has. The tunnel is whooping 60 meters underground and used to prevent flooding in the greater Tokyo area during a major natural disasters such as tsunami typhoon or massive flood waters.this tunnel temple is so massive it's a size of 600 football fields and it's depth to 50/60 meters underground, one and only such a infrastructures in the world. so Dubai government is very rich so they can afford to bring Japanese engineers and contractors in Dubai to build such a extreme engineering project to prevent future flooding waters in the city. It could cost more than 200 billion dollars, cheap project for the country like 🇦🇪

Nah, unless it lasted hundreds of years with no prolonged dry spells. Just washes away any top soil and the water either passes straight through the sand or is quickly evaporated. They could do more with better water management, appropriate storm drains etc.

They do. They make it rain over the mountains and collect a lot into reservoirs which allows the water to soak into the ground and add to the ground water. It’s pointless trying to keep lakes and reservoirs because of the heat and evaporation rates.

Not really because it rains about 5 days per year there, and that’s not even widespread rain, just localised rain from passing storm cells.

The video certainly seems real, but i don't have any knowledge of the areas filmed to say whether or not they are all in Dubai nor could I assess if they were all filmed recently. I watched some TV news tonight, but there were no stories about this flooding. Does that mean there is no real story, or that the story just isn't newsworthy compared to all the other competing stories?

@@rickmerritt128 Exactly. Some background info is needed for context. I assume that such flooding is quite rare only because, if it were common, the people would certainly develop protections against injuries, deaths, and such extensive damage to cars and flooding of buildings. But, I do not know how often this could happen or if this flooding is only in isolated locations. Maybe the cost of installing and maintaining flood control channels and storm drains would be too high to justify if this is a very rare occurrence.
