Dubai is the perfect example of proverb "The brighter the light, the blacker the shadow".

Having grown up around Dubai for nearly all my childhood and teenage-hood, a number of visits to see old friends... Im so happy I mentally grew out of it too... its one of the fakest, overpriced, entitled, hypocritical, culture-less, superficial and materialistic societies ever. The more I've traveled to other countries in the world, the more I realise you couldnt pay me to live in Dubai again.

It feels like Dubai is just some guy's first attempt at playing Cities: Skylines after watching a few videos on RU-vid and immediately using the Unlock All mod rather than learning about city development whatsoever.

The thing about being rich and powerful is that you have seen and experienced it all, and so you get bored, so bored in fact that it can make you feel like you're going mental because you are on a loop doing the same things every day with no hope of new experiences, and so many turn to drinking and drug abuse, but, even that can get boring if it does not kill you first. And so they think of new ways to manufacture new experiences, but there are only so many experiences you can manufacture before you end up spiraling out of control and doing things you never thought you would do. I had a friend during my early 20s who was from dubai. She's an absolute sweetheart, but living there was hell for her because she is a woman and a lesbian. She disappeared one day about 10 years ago and i still have no idea what's happened to her. I hope she's still alive and doing well, but with how her family is/was she might not be. :(

When I think of Dubai, I can't help but see it as a ruined capital, abandoned of everything in 20 or 30 years' time. The level of emptiness, false values and injustice is as high as its very existence contradicts all the principles that preside over the creation of a city (proximity to water, architecture shaped by primary needs, etc.) A bombastic materialization of greed and all the excesses that go with it, which naturally cannot last forever.

We work in tech and finance and regularly do business in Dubai, sometimes staying for weeks. The city is DIRTY, with poisonous smog. Costs run into 4-7K average monthly spending on _basics,_ has insane traffic, inflated prices, weird urban and infrastructure planning -and it is expanding massively! Not the city it was a few years ago (if you knew where to vibe, made friends, etc.) and will be far less in the years ahead.

When I was in HS, we were on a trip for a hockey game. Me and another guy on the team went down to the hotel pool around 11:30pm and ran into our coach who was coming out of the bar drunk as hell. We ended up talking with him for the next hour. He was always a pretty open and blunt guy but that night in his drunken stupor he started telling us this story about being in Vegas and getting something called a "bathroom window" (I can't remember if that was the actual name for it). He got a prostitute who had him lie on the ground and put a small glass table over his head so he was looking up through the glass as the prostitute...well, did the thing for which the act got it's name. It was apparently a regular service offered by this 304 who came prepared, just like the fiber eating girl on the plane.
