Although previewed as far back as 2018, the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Automatic reached the marketplace recently enough to contest and win the 2021 GPHG "Mechanical Exception" prize. This 41mm white gold watch measures an exceptional 4.3mm in diameter; it ranks among the thinnest automatic watches in the world. Piaget builds the movement into the caseback in order to minimize thickness and adds a peripheral rotor automatic winding system for the same reason. The Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Automatic employs caliber 910P with a peripheral winding rotor and a "hanging" mainspring barrel in order to achieve a 4.3mm profile. However, the Piaget remains a viable daily watch for office and formal use. The Altiplano's power reserve of 48 hours and 20-meter water resistance equal the capabilities of far thicker watches from rival watchmakers.
