One of the most important and commonly used material types for fly tying is Dubbing. It can be used for small dry flies, nymphs and even streamers. Many companies make it, and there are many different types of dubbing out there. Each style of dubbing has different properties and can be used in different ways.
Here I wanted to discuss those differences and uses. Hope this was informative to you.

Love the channel. For me, fly tying is about connecting to nature. So I tend to use mostly natural materials. So are so many furs out there and they are each a little different, so it can be daunting at first. The key is to experiment and to identify the pros and cons of each. I like to take the dubbing right off the skin, as it helps me control the amount of guard hairs. Some of my favorites are pine squirrel and gray fox for drab nymphs, rabbit for dark nymphs (it takes dark dye really well), and red fox and golden retriever for light nymphs (for golden retriever, I just use the shedding of my dogs winter coat). For dry flies, I like muskrat, beaver, snowshoe rabbit, and mink. The beauty of mink is that there are white, brown, and black varieties. Wool is really versatile as well. It takes dye really well, so can be dyed to almost any color, and it is hydroscopic. So it will absorb water or silicone floatant equally as well.

Thanks, glad you like the channel. I totally understand where your coming from with materials being all natural. And I also connect with nature while fly fishing. However I like trying all types of materials also. Different types of materials have different properties and sometimes can benefit a fly if used rather than some others. I think many pattern’s definitely need natural materials but I feel some others also seem to do better with synthetics. So while I totally respect and understand your reasoning on why you like only synthetic, I personally like to use both depending on the fly. Hope you understand

@@McFlyAngler totally understand and agree. I’m a firm believer in “you do you and I’ll do me”. I only brought up my preferences to identify some different options for the readers of the comments. FWIW, I’m not a natural or nothing person. I do use synthetics when it’s the best fit. Speaking of that, have you ever used Gartside Secret Stuff (“GSS”)? The GSS Emerger is a killer pattern. I’ve never broke down and bought the GSS (it’s only sold on Jack Gartside’s website), I substitute angel hair. I’m wondering how different GSS is.

I have not used gss, sorry. I have heard it’s a great pattern also.

Excellent! Good to know. I was taught differences using muskrat vs rabbit style. So it's really good to learn the packaged stuff.

Very informative! Dubbing is one of the most (if not the most) versatile materials out there... one of my favorite flies, the simi seal leech, is made almost entirely from dubbing.

Yes, I’ve got a Fly coming out this weekend that is all dubbing (besides a hook, thread and head cement). I agree, dubbing is important

Excellent tutorial Angler. Thanks, I learned a lot. Would you consider a part deux where you could show how to create a dubbing loop, a noodle and direct tying dubbing? I would be very interested in that.

Yes I can do that. This was more about types of dubbing, I plan on doing technique videos for fly tying soon...

Use flash and synthetic yarn with an animal brush. You can pretty much make your own. I did a video before on doing it.

Adams flies? I never use rabbit dubbing, it sinks. I use fine and dry often. It’s a synthetic. Muskrat for when I want to go all natural.

I’d love to help you if it was my shirt, which it sounds like it was. I personally don’t sell them, it’s a company that makes them and sells them, then gives me a cut. Have you tried contacting them? I’m sure they will help you. If they can’t do anything for you let me know, and I’ll see if there is anything I can do.

These comments get pushed back so far it’s hard to find them again. I can’t help you until you can talk with me. I don’t know enough about you and your order to talk with them. If you could find me on Facebook and private message me there when you come back to this, I would be happy to try and help ya. If you don’t have Facebook, then we will have to figure out another way. Maybe make a fresh comment in a new video so it re-fresh’s the convo.
