I’ve been dreaming of having my own Ducati collection for some time. Unfortunately, I got distracted with crashes and some purchases that didn’t really suit me in the end. I got back on track with the 916 SPS a few years ago and now have finally added another piece to the puzzle: the Ducati 999.
It immediately struck gold in the World Superbike Championship on its release. Thanks to the design, which was not for everyone back in the day, it stands out really nicely nowadays with some extraordinary details. This bike here has low milage, not a scratch and is almost completely original.
The question is: What to do now? Leave it is as it is or add some mods? Be happy with the bikes or get another one? Tell me your thoughts in the comments below!

The new Panigale V4 2025 is quite controversial. So when opportunity knocked last weekend, I packed my camera, drove to Hockenheim and recorded the brand-new superbike in proper 4K. Enjoy! 😊 What are your thoughts on the design? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dgdLBJotm-w.html

I think the 999 is a masterpiece. The way the design flows together and into itself so organically, I find it more beautiful and attention grabbing than any of the bikes that came before it or after it.
@DonnieDesmo

I still feel the 916 looks better as a whole, but it has been imitated a lot, whereas the 999 is still kind of unique. And I love a lot of the details, from the tail to the tank!

I am an outdoorsman and love dogs and wilderness. That's my love. But the first time I saw a Ducati 999. It was just like my first crush. It is difficult to describe in words. But I get butterflies in my stomach when someone says Ducati 999! This is the most beautiful bike ever made !!

Totally underrated design. I recently had a colleague over and we took a look at my 916. Then I just removed half the tarp of the 999 to show the rear and he was blown away by that one 😃

Stumbled over this vid. Been a 999 Bip owner since 2007. Purchased my bike new and she has covered 21,000 miles since then. I like to keep my bike as the designer Pierre Terblanche would have it. However I'am running a full Termigioni 57mm exhaust system with Ducati performance filters and ECU to match set up by my local Ducati dealer (Cornerspeed), Nitron rear shock and rebuilt forks. I have ridden quite a few other sports bikes, many more powerful and packed with technology, but none have made me feel like the 999 does. The handling, outstanding throttle response and general visceral feel of the bike are absolutely 'on message' as far as I'am concerned. And although today she is the garage 'Queen' in her early years she was used properly and I have to say 100% reliable. Which is why I still own it after 17 years!😁

Sounds awesome! I hope I'll keep mine for at least as long. I have been thinking about a Termignoni system, but at least sound-wise I'm surprisingly happy the way it is. Not saying I won't do it anyway 😁

Congratulations on your 999, keep growing the collection, love the video and keep them coming. In terms of modifications I would keep the bike standard and just enjoy the road and track. During the summer I had my 996 SPS on the track and all I can say wow what an awesome bike. I know you consider your 916SP as a China vase, but enjoying to its full potential is so rewarding.

I myself bought a 999R from the MY 2004, so the first generation of the R. This still has the narrower fairing with the 4 air intakes but already the black SBK swingarm and also the standard fairing made of carbon, even the seat is made of this material. In addition, various covers and also the exhaust fairing made of the same material. I was skeptical when the 999 came out - but the R proved to me that the new design can also look very good. The material combination of the R in combination with the special frame and engine is something that you have to look for a long time today. The rideability is excellent and even after 20 years, the bike looks as if it had sprung from today's times. The 999 is one of the most underrated motorcycles of the last two decades. The styling is well done throughout, she is a face in the crowd of motorcycles that are almost the same. It's a great bike.

Great collection Donnie! I am biased by the same dream... currently own a 996 biposto and a 999s monoposto. Both fantastic bikes, but I als love the looks of an 1199 Panigale. In stead of buying a brand new V4S Panigale you can own these both and even add a 1199 to the collection. Isn't that crazy? Guess it's a matter of choices...

Good question, as we know Ducati eventually switched from Termi’s to Akro’s on their racing bikes, so I’m guessing there possibly a better system, a lot of people recommend the Akro above the Termi’s, but for me watching past WSBK and BSBK races it’s the Termi’s that are part of Ducati. After selling the 1098s I bought a Panigale 1298s fitted with the Akro exhaust, sounded good but not as good as my previous Ducatis fitted with Termi’s. 🤟😎

@@alij100100I think the sound dfference is due to the Superquadro engine. I had an 899 with the 108db stock exhaust and that one also didn't quite do it for me. I always wondered if the switch to Akra was a money decision by Ducati management...

@DonnieDesmo
@DonnieDesmo 7 дней назад
The 999 is easier to ride over longer distances than its predecessors, but it's still a superbike. If you're not somewhat trained, 2 hour trips might get a bit tough because the body position will put weight on your shoulders, arms and wrists. The core muscles and legs will also get a workout, and don't forget your neck depending on your size and windshield. The bike's only made to protect you from wind properly when you're more or less flat on the tank. If you're doing more than 100km/h consistently, your head will get a lot of wind.

Nice video sir. I too have a 999 which I bought new in 2006 - knowing the replacement model was on its way. I have the Biposto version and I love it. I still have my ST2 as well as getting a Diavel in 2010 when it was a brand new model. The bottom line is that as an every day bike, on the roads of the Czech Republic, the 999 could not be more unsuitable, hence the Diavel. I have kept the 999 though and took to Brno, Misano, Most and the Slovakiaring though it has not seen a track in a number of years now. I actually think the looks have aged well and whilst it's sales numbers flopped after the 998, I never thought it was ugly and it was a better bike all round than its predecessor. I have thought about aftermarket exhausts etc but I really don't see the value in them. I did fit an 'anti hopping' clutch which was good on the track but that is about it. As for the future and things going electric - well yes that is maybe a concern but it is a worry for tomorrow's me and for now I am going to enjoy the bikes. I think that there shall be a strong fan base for quite a few years to come. Of the bikes you listed there is one, more than any other Ducati that I would lust over and that is an 888. I would truly love one of those and would take it over a Pannigale, 1198 etc. Thanks for the insight.

Back in 2003 I owned a 916 and almost part exchanged it for a new 999 but was so disappointed in how quite it was unless I paid an extra £1000 for termi exhausts so decided to keep my 916. I've had a 748 and now have a 99, 996 with only 5k on the clock. Plus my Panigale V4 my third panigale. I don't even give the ev bullshit any head space. Nowadays the 999 looks awesome. 1st, it's a beautiful motorcycle. 2nd, it's 'old' enough to be collectible. I think a SuperSport style bike or a Monster would be a nice addition to balance out the forward thinking of Ducati. The 'modern' SS formula: grab a Monster add a Panigale style wrapper & finally: handlebar, footpegs 'n seat - for all day comfort. The 2017 - '23 SS only need cruise control to make it Monster 'daily driveable' & it becomes a veritable Swiss Army knife, or Leatherman tool. Wanna cruise the Western mountains from Canada to Mexico or attempt a track day or grab milk @ the Piggly-Wiggly- it's all good! Monster sez Ducati better than any other motorcycle on the planet. Everyone is unique, yet every model screams Ducati from its absurdedly oversized gas tank to the unique sound of the Desmo engine/exhaust. Any (all) Ducati collections require at least one Monster, if only to show Ducati's visionary insight. You asked, right?

I think you should sell the 999 and buy a 1098s. It is the true successor to be 916 series. Barely more expensive to buy and easier to live with than the 999.Also, in my opinion, better looking than the 916. The 916/999 make all the right noises, but are not actually that fast, whereas the 1098 makes the same noise but pulls like a train. Having ridden all three I can say that the 916 makes you feel like a connisuer, but that's no consolation when you get dusted by a family sallon. You crack the throttle, it makes all boom and bark, but doesn't actually accelerate all that fast.The 999 is a lttle faster, but lacks the kudos of the 916. Although an interesting machine, you won't fall in love with it, and will sell it in a year or two. Riding the 1098 makes you feel like a rockstar. You can ride next to any other motorcycle in existence and not feel overshadowed. It has much more road presence than both the 916 and 999, and unlike the 916 which looks good only in side profile, and the 999 which looks good from no angle, the 1098 is truly a timeless beauty, with no weak angle. Add to this an engine which feels monstrous on the road, and brakes to match, the only area the 916 is superior is in nostalgia. But for the 1098 that will come.The 1098 is in that place where it's not new, yet not considered a classic. I believe it's reputation and appreciation will only increase with time, so now is a perfect time to buy.

Weeeell. People might disagree with some of that 😁 I really like the 1098, so it's a big option - for reasons of performance, looks and sound as you say. But to me the looks of the 916 are eternal, especially the front. It may be slower than a 1098 but pushing a 916 SPS takes all your attention or it will bite you. I don't need to be faster than everybody else. I also really like the 999's looks because it's unique. But the 1098 is awesome, for sure, so I'll make a mark for that one 👍
