NOTE: I have K&N filter already installed. If you have OEM filter see info below. Please read the service manual and use that as you primary guide. This video is just a loose guideline to get you familiar with the job so you know what to expect and hopefully inspires you to do your own maintenance and learn about your motorcycle.
Oil mesh filter does not need to be checked every time. See owners manual for service intervals. But it is not much extra work to do so there is no reason not to do it every time you change oil.

Very good video; this is the DESMO oil change, on the regular service you skip all those extra steps but just draining the oil and removing the old filter. fill it with new oil and new filter and is done.

gotta say, one of the best instructionals I've seen. No explosive intro with twerkable music, no "I'm gonna do this now" talk and holding hands before you do it - you just do it. "Show me don't tell me" format, love it! Subscribed. How do you like your Monster? It sounds awesome. I'll have to look through your videos and see what exhaust you have on it.
@HoldFastFilms
@HoldFastFilms 8 лет назад
Hey man, thanks for the kind words! It's really appreciated. Bike itself has been pretty good so far. It's definitely a bike that wants to go and go fast. Can be scary at time when you wind it up. It's no slouch that's for sure. I have Zard exhaust on it. Everyone has Termi's on and they were bit too expensive for my taste so didn't want to go that route. Nothing else appealed to me either so I settled on Zard. I'm not happy nor disappointed with Zard. It's not a bad exhaust but it was not loud enough for me. Made the exhaust note a little deeper than stock but not much louder. I wanted something that would make the bike sound like ... well ... a monster.
@jessefretwell

+Hold Fast Films makes sense. I've been looking at it just for a little bit recently. I love the looks and sound but I'm having a bit of a hard time with balancing my needs and wants. I am interested to sit on one at the dealer and see how it fits me. I'm 6'4" and cycle-ergo.com only goes so far. For the longest time I was in love with the Yamaha fj 09 but I saw a video of the 821 and a sc projects crt slip on and that's all I've been thinking about. Sounds like a monster. I'll have to send the link later. Keep up the good work!

Just used this video to change the oil on my 2016 Monster 821. The 12mm oil mesh filter drain plug was on SUPER tight. It might feel weird when you are taking it off like you are stripping something but it will come off. I didn't have anyone to help support the bike but it finally gave. The oil mesh filter is 17mm NOT 19mm. Be careful on which 17mm allen you use as it may not fit through to be able to reach the 17mm part. I had to run out to the store and grab an actual 17mm allen key because the 17mm allen socket bit I had would not fit through. Also changed from the original Ducati oil filter to the K&N filter as it will be so much easier to take off next time with a socket.
@ktmarvin300
@ktmarvin300 4 года назад
Did they oil change yesterday, but ran into 2 problems: the midpipe just won't come out of the headers and the socket of my 18mm hex was too thick to fit into the oil mesh filter. Solved these issues as follows: If you have trouble removing the midpipe, remove the silencer first. If you've only got a thick socket with a 18mm hex insert pressed into it, knock it out of the socket and use it with a slim 17mm nut to reach the mesh oilfilter.

Question. Do you need to replace the crush washers (in the 5mm and 12mm nuts ) and oil mesh gasket ?
@HoldFastFilms
@HoldFastFilms 8 лет назад
Duc Nguyen I typically change crush washers every other time if I don't have one. I've never had a problem with it so that's up to you. Mesh didn't have one. Just an o-ring which I didn't change. I don't see a reason for that.
@aberzvideo2285
@aberzvideo2285 8 лет назад
Hold Fast Films Thanks. Service manual doesnt mention about replacing crush washers or O-ring gaskets. I just ordered a bunch of crush washers for my m821 (both 5mm and 12mm allen nuts) from amsducati anyway. They are quite cheap and often backorder on ducatiomaha, so may as well grab some extra when I can :). Another thing. Service manual instructs to open the bottom 12mm allen nut beside the 5mm one but I dont see why. Any insight ?

My 1200's oil change turn into disaster! Even though there is only one oil filter on 1200. My cheap oil filter wrench ripped through the canister and I was not able to remove the filter at all. I ended up buying multiple tools, spent hours to get it out and also had to remove the pipe as well. Everything was too tight for some reason! Though, this was my first time doing it, I think it'll be much easier next time. It seemed like this wasn't your first time;)

When I did the 600 mile service, I didn't have any sealant so I didn't use any. Didn't use the next time either and have not had any issues. I noticed that Ducati put some on there from the factory so if you have some, it would not hurt to seal it. Now that I have a whole tube, I might start using it.

@HoldFastFilms
@HoldFastFilms 8 лет назад
Oil change intervals depend on a lot of factors - which oil, type or riding, temperatures etc. Personally, I am sticking to ~3000 miles. For torque values, read the video description. There is a link to the service manual which is a must and a great resource.
@RayCarrender
@RayCarrender 8 лет назад
Hi Hold Fast! I love the video and in double checking the service manual vs the video a couple of things caught me by surprise. On page 131 of the service manual it gives a ridiculous torque for the plastic mesh filter (you say tighten by hand only) and the bolt behind it is the same huge number (but it looks like you barely use the torque wrench at all) Also, when cleaning the mesh filter and bolts what is the best way to clean this? I know it seems like a stupid question, but better safe than sorry.

The mesh filter is made of cheap plastic so I would not torque that at all. That's just a personal preference. You can just spray it with carb cleaner but anything will work. It doesn't have to be specific. Just make sure it is dry and free of lint and other debris before you put it back in.

Lots of vids of this online, this one is THE BEST I've seen so far. very cool. IMO What a lousy design, having to take off the exhaust to get the filter. Freakin engineer idiots! AAgghh.

Vard its a compromise , at least they made it super easy to remove with just a couple of springs and a clamp. No big deal.

Hey awesome video again. What stand are you using and spools?

Just some cheap stuff from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01721KF6I/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I guess they don't sell the spools there anymore so I don't have a link to them.

hello there, I have a question you indicate on the video that 4 sizes of allen are needed to perform the oil change 5mm, 12mm, 17mm and 19 mm, but in the tool list above there are other sizes like 14mm and 19 mm is not listed, so wich are the correct sizes needed, I have to purchase them so I want to be sure, thanks in advance

I'd love to know that as well.

I´ve already double checked sizes 5,12 and 14 (already bought them) I guess those sizes are pretty much it, I wonder what about 17 and 19 mm......, seems to be a mistake, I am eager to confirm this

Hey, sorry I've been swamped with work and have not even seen the bike in a month. I don't have the time to go over and see if I made mistakes but check out the service manual in video description. That should confirm sizes. That was the idea with these videos - to just show the amount of work and steps and at the same time get you familiar with service manual. Hope that helps man!

If using a strap wrench, how do I know how much to tighten the filter.

So it is OK to put the bike on a rear stand only? thought you would need to do front as well to keep it level?

I didn't do one and probably won't because there are a tone of really good videos on the subject already. Here are couple of good ones: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7H5hgVbTvhg.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XgPpLKCUlbA.html

Your video is very informative and straightforward, thank you from a future Monster 821 owner, how much the oil and filter cost?
@HoldFastFilms

There is a link to oil and filter on Amazon in the video description. Roughly $80.

I have a 2016 monster 1200 and about to hit to the 1st service (600miles). Do you think it is necessary to bring it to the dealer? or can we just do the oil change? Thanks for all your the videos, it is really helpfully.
@HoldFastFilms
@HoldFastFilms 8 лет назад
You can do your own oil change but you won't be able to reset the service light yourself. If that bothers you, it might be worth it. Also, the dealer will check other things at first service (so they say).
