MCN, Can you please make more of an effort with your reviews please. We want to hear about the MPG, HP, build quality, durability... what the headlight is like at night, accessories, how they handle motorway journeys and around town, wind protection etc etc etc - the list goes on. Iv seen far better presented and more detailed reviews from a random biker with a GoPro! Put some effort in guys!

Bit of a rubbish review to be honest. A clash of the Titans review started comparing the size of the pannier and its ability to carry a helmet! Wow, a real crunch point!

One of the questions should be "Can this bike survive one of Ewan's trips?"

For purely sealed road riding purposes I'd agree with this assessment but the BMW has a wider riding brief than just sealed roads so I can't see how the Ducati is the better "all rounder".

Took me a while to find your comment as most people seem to concentrate on money and maintenance aspect while the real question is: What do You actually expect from your bike? To me is the BMW. Had 2007 model and absolutely LOVED IT !!!

Just test drove the Diavel yesterday and let me say FAST FAST FAST. That said wow it throws off some heat and if you are fairly tall (6'+) you are smashed up against the tank. So while I was there I was checking out the Multistrada and they let me take a ride as well. All I can say is wow! Comfortable seating position, super light, almost as quick as the Diavel with 150 HP, and a pleasure to ride.

I've ridden both of these bikes, about an hour each. The R1200GS is a big, solid, comfy bike. It just thumps along and if I were looking to ride across the country, this would probably be my bike, but it lacks any real excitement. The MTS1200 however strokes your soul. I squealed like a little girl when I gave it some throttle. The excitement and just pure joy of riding is unmatched. The difference between these two is like driving a Cadillac and a Ferarri. The Cadi is comfy, but not as fun

I rode them both, that is the 2013 BMW 1200GS WC and the 2013 Ducati MS. In comparison both bikes kick the ass of their respective predecessors. Against each other however, they are simply different characters, but both fly on road - both easily have more power than needed, and both have excellent brakes, and handling. Suspension wise both just float along smoothly when you want to or have the hard edge when you want that, although the Ducati has more dive on hard braking.

I have owned both the GS and the Multistrada. The GS is too heavy and the technology is too dated. The Multistrada is more fun to ride. It is lighter and the performance is better. BMW need to up their game. Now their RR, on the other hand, is SUPERB!
@StuHNomadBiker
@StuHNomadBiker 9 лет назад
The GS is not meant to be a "performance bike" these are two different animals. My 2013 GS has TC and ABS, ESA etc so I don't see how a Multistrada is way more advanced? horses for courses as we say here, go with what you like most, GS has been the best selling big bike in the UK ( and parts of Europe ) for the last few years .
@asturiancetorix2552
@asturiancetorix2552 9 лет назад
IMAO both play different markets. The Multistrada is a RR bike on the shape of a asphalt-trail. Like the new Tracer, and others. We´ll see the new BMW trail with the S1000RR engine, so that´s the proof of the existence of this "new" kind of "tall sporty bikes", Very fast, very powerful. I owe one, think the GS was not designed to be fast, but safe, easy to ride, with plenty of torque at medium rpm. On the older 1200 air cooled I can use that 115NM torque to ride comfortably on the public roads (with speed limits), using the benefits of a high torque engine on low or medium rpm´s.

@fastlosi Hi again. I also noticed, BMW has something called Trophy Tunisia. Looks like Countries compete on BMW GS Bikes in"" Serious Sand"" So, this makes me laugh when someone in a video says who takes these bikes offroad. Also, there is a event here (US) where its pretty hardcore. I can't remember the name. Total Offroad skills course. The winner wins a GS800 I think. Ducatti makes great products and I'm sure if this is their new course, it will be interesting in the future.
@rob2049
@rob2049 12 лет назад
Its not complicated Ducati is more of a street bike that is a good tourer, has a nice upright comfortable position that does a decent job offroad (half-ass job). GS is is focused on offroad sport touring that has a good road handling characteristics, and its native habitat is anything but flat surface. I have the bimmer, king of offroad in this class, period. Good analogy is like comparing apples to oranges, Ducati cannot claim victory on all fronts neither does BMW

I'm gonna get me a new GS when my old R/100/GS hits 200,000 miles. Or maybe I'll just restore it, I love that old bike. I've turned down a few chances to ride a new GS, I really don't want to know what I'm missing. As far as owning a Ducati, no thank you, I like riding too much to own a bike that's as hard to service as most Ducks are. I rode a Strada but at a blur following it's owner on a Bimota, mostly I was on the rev limiter. It felt good to get on my old GS afterwards, man I like that bik

The reviewer said "for an all-rounder, it has to be the Ducati". That's an interesting take. And yet I can't see anyone seriously considering setting off across the third world on a Ducati. That would be lunacy. The GS is made and proven to take anything you can throw at it.

This is an interesting video, in that it has me thinking that modern bikes, due to modern technology, are easily capable of going about as fast as you would want to go on road without any problems (not like the 'old' days where you could go fast but it was more of a risk). Sure, 0-100 times may vary but just about any bike can go 'safe fast' through a mountain pass. So, I am thinking that for adventure bikes its time to ignore their 'on road' ability and focus on 'off road', thats where its at.

The Duc certainly has some sweet gear in & around it but I'm a BMW man myself but I do like the Duc's as well, as they say if you want an all-rounder then the Duc is the one to go for. Speaking of LWR, I'm reading the book, if you haven't read it yet then do so, it'll give you more on what went down! Wonder what it would have been like if they had the KTM's...Mmm?! Cheers.

@wolfyys Ur absolutely right,Ducati's resonably good on the dirt too.It provides enough performance for an average rider to take it offroad. BMW's F800,HONDA VARADERO 700,YAMAHA TENERE,KAWASAKI KLR 650 r the far better in offroad conditions,lighter&manageable.Ducati is not designed as a direct competator 2 BMW(like SUPER TENERE 1100) but has offered something a little different.Rather than competing for BMW's market share DUCATI has a product that can appeal to a broader & newer customer base.

@fastlosi Ok.. my bad. ;) I said it a bit wrong. I do not deny the influence of BMW to the dakar. But I was talking about the BMW 1200 GS as a Dakar bike ;). By the way, a modified version of the KTM Adventure won the Dakar. I like the new BMW racing in Dakar. Its a nice bike! And yes, Ducati doesnt have anything to do with off-road.

Having ridden both bikes, I have to agree, there is no way the DUC can be considered an "all rounder" compared to the GS. No way you can sit in the saddle for 12 plus hours. The panniers have the construction quality of plastic lunch pails and I just would not want to take it down anything rougher than a gravel driveway. It is an ergonomically comfortable sport bike with plenty of cool technology and a shit eating grin fun engine but not what I would consider an "all rounder".
@sscramble
@sscramble 13 лет назад
How about the Kawasaki Versys as an all-rounder, I test rode one of those and thought it was great - comfortable, sporty and can easily take a box and panniers for a bit of touring. Not designed for off-roading but how many of us actually go off-road?!

seriously, you take two 'adventure' bikes, one of which has a dirt pedigree as long as your arm by the way, you then take them on a touring ride and you declare the 'fastest' one the winner, no off-road tests, no hard core dirt roads, no (real equipment, sundries, extras etc)comparisons what a joke, the Ducati would fall apart on serious dirt roads and its more expensive! This has to be the worst side by side 'adventure' comparison test I've ever seen.

@buzzkillor .....Also, just as another consideration..I drew some water into the engine of my BMW R1100gs last weekend while crossing a stream....it took me all of about 5 minutes to pop off the lead, take out the plug, crank it over to expel the water, give the plug a quick clean and screw it back in...on both sides. That would have been a much bigger PITA with the Duc.

As for the Ducati, it's a beautiful and extremely fast bike, easy to drive, with a very sporty heart, but it's just a fabulous big street machine, not as hardcore as the BMW that can take all the punishment that you can throw at it. Besides, most people will use the Ducati as a big street and not as the proverbial Land Rover Defender.
@dahveed284
@dahveed284 14 лет назад
A good review. It would have been better if you had taken both motorcycles on some gravel roads and tested them there as well. Both of these bikes are designed for that, so it would have been a fair test. Then I feel the BMW's 19 inch front wheel would have been a plus, not a minus. I bet the manufacturer ask you not to take it off road. Still, you could have at least mentioned it in the review. How do you think off-road touring would change your picks?
@jasonsitu
@jasonsitu 13 лет назад
@eimpossibile i agree there is no competitors for the trip (they did ask KTM to provide the bike the KTM refused). but it's still very impressive that the bmws didnt have any major mechanical problems apart from crack frame cuz they dropped/crashed it so many times. and to me reliability is the most important aspect of an all-around bike. KTM and ducati fall short in that category. but thats just my opinion =)

It's your own fault, you should know what MCN videos are like by now. My personal favourite is the cruiser test, the Harley won because the others "aren't Harleys"...brilliant. As for this video "you can't quite fit a helmet in the pannier, you have to extend it" in other words YOU CAN FIT A HELMET IN THE PANNIER...jeez
@Real2244
@Real2244 13 лет назад
The only thing that was actually compared on this video was the size of the panniers. How about: Dirt road? Off road? Wet road? Brake? And also, it would appear that they ignore the fact a larger front wheel is what gives you better off-road capabilites (if I had to cross a stream or river , hands down on the BMW). I think that the chance to actually compare two great machines was wasted.

I testdrove both bikes yesterday the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S and the BMW GS 1200. I am a Ducatist and had a 1098 S, most beautyfull bike ever :-) Ducati 1200 S: + Very agil, power is great. - Drive by wire does not feel so good connected, instrument is Playstation style,Price. BMW 1200 GS: + Very nice package, smooth driving, more bike for less money. -not as powerfull and not as agil Ok I bought a BMW GS1200 and got rid of my Ducati 1098 S

Engine wise Ducati wins. But, an engine doesn't head off road to gravel and trail, the whole bike does. Ducati has to fix several deficits in at least one variant of the 'strada to tap the large ADV bike market. It really needs a bigger, 19" front wheel. The wattage of electricity generated has to be seriously upgraded. And, an option made for a factory lowered frame to get seat height down. At 850mm a lot of riders like me are forced to one of the 3 BMW ADV bikes that have this option.

I agree with you 100%.....but IMO the fact that the multi doesn't come with the option of different wheels and tyres means it's not really suited as a true all rounder. My problem isn't so much with the bike - it's great - as much as with the claim made by this video that "the king is dead" ....Now without a doubt the Ducati will beat the BM in some things but I wouldn't dream of taking the italian here... do video search "R 1200 GS vs Super Tenere - ADB & Riemann go outback"

The Ducati feels like it is reading your mind and responds to every input. I have a Maserati and it feels like that. But I also have a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, which goes anywhere, like the GS will, short of trails and heavy sand. BTW the new GS feels much smaller and lighter than the previous iteration (even though it is not) and feels more powerful than the hp / torque #s . In the end I picked the GS (delivery next month) - I don't want to be a road racer. Pick the Ducati if you do.

This is possibly the best bike u can buy...... It looks gud, has ample power, u can go mile-munching with it and on certain days, u can take it off-road(may be with some mods like better tyres)....... Most importantly, it takes away the need of having a bunch of bikes in ur garage.. Its one bike that would equally satisfy a dozen of ur needs!!

The bimmer is an adventurer because it is freaking indestructible, it will go on any terrain quite comfortably and will provide some fun on tarmac. Ducati is a f#cking riding nirvana. It looks and rides like a super bike but is comfortable for long journeys. It was made for tarmac. Both of these bikes are brilliant and it depends on the roads you will ride them on. No or bad roads = Bimmer, tarmac = Ducati. Sure you can take Ducati offroad but let's be honest you won't want to. Me? I want both!

Probably, but you are missing out on reliability with such a test. The question is, is the Multistrada equal to or more reliable than the GS? Only time will tell, but going from the past, there is no competition to the GS when it comes to reliability and for a globe trotter, this is the most important aspect.

@FTFsystem For the 'normal' person any bike will do, but each bike goes a bit more to a different side, Ktm aims more at off-road/adventure touring, BMW more at normal touring and slow off-roading, and the Ducati is more sporty then the others, but to the normal (without the experience these guys have) person with the same tires these bikes wont differ a lot. I would personally pick the KTM 990 Adventure R because I do some offroading from time to time... (but this just reflects my opinion)

Off road use, the gs it isn't an off road bike, I have used it in Morocco, Tunisia and on military alpine roads but offroad is something else, get a KTM 690 or an Elefant 900 production 89-93 to do it.

A-ha, I see that the BMW isn't the Adventure model but just as good; its a bit shorter in the saddle which is good, seat can be either 850mm or 870mm, costs out here in Aus is $21,925 (2010 model). This is the bike I'd pick rather than the adventure for the mere fact that when you're standing you have more control over the beast; remember how Ewan & Charley struggled with their bikes...a slight wobble & you're gone! I like to see the Duc put to the test in a long haul beside the BMW on dirt?!

Fernando Gonzalez The GS is a compromise. If you want do a variety of things with it, they are possible. If you need to be at the top in a particular category, you should choose a specialized bike. For me, the GS ADV is a two wheeled camping and touring truck.

@AJB074 99% of my riding is on road. Half on the highway and half through the city. The Duc will probably be my next bike.

The Ducati is more similar to the Triumph Tiger 1050i than to the GS. They will prefer to test it with a GS - cause this result is more interesting for clients - cause the GS is the Top-Seller in this case... Of course you cannot drive with the Multistrada on same roads like a GS - not a problem to mount offroad-profiles on a BMW - but the GS can drive on all roads a Multistrada does. .. so its everybodies own choice what he prefers. About all this dont forget: BMW answers with a new GS ;-)

@SplashDamageNL Honda had an adventure bike some time ago. I think it was call the Trans Alp. I'm only saying BMW been doing this type of bike the longest and no company should make the claim they are better without a leg to stand on. Comparison should be onroad, wet/dry and trail riding wet/dry. There is a video of this bike offroad. Short, but offroad. I wonder if BMW had patents on the GS platform and they have expired. Many adventure bike claims are popping up. KTMs are cool bikes.

1200gs is a heavy tank. Too heavy weight for urban and too weak for the street. The Ducati is great for street and not really useful for urban. When we are on tour in group we have sometimes a Moto Morini Granpasso with us and this bike is really the champ always and beats all of us. Hope MM can continue their company in future.

any motorcycles would make a "long way down" with 3 jeep below. I remind you that all 3 gs1200 broke the chassis and 2 bikes the damper and many other things but they were the parts back with their. You can not go around the world with gs1200 because there are no spare parts.
