Duckbill scissors

Duckbill scissors are a pair of funny shaped scissors with a wide flat blade and a slightly angled handle so that your hand is lifted from the fabric while you cut.
The paddle blade (also called the duckbill blade) prevents you from cutting the stitches or the good part of the fabric. At the same time the angled handle allows you to hold the scissors well while the blade is really flat on the material. Using the duckbill scissors you can cut fabric very close to stitches and that’s why they are widely used in making appliques.

I'm always accidentally snipping seams too close in my projects. This looks like an excellent tool to keep my hand steady and the cuts neat.
@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry
@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry 2 года назад
Right on! That is the exact purpose of the scissors, to avoid cutting the seam when cutting the extra material after finishing the seam.

I have always called these scissors pelican bill scissors lol No wonder that my sewing friends would look at me like I had 3 heads, but no one ever corrected me 🙂 Yes definitely great in everyday sewing. Since I do not do embroidery I use them for French seams and baby hems (rolled hem)

I have a pair too. wish the finger holes were larger. Can get uncomfortable if need to use them a while. I have a 3rd hand that I use along with these for trimming seam allowances. It will keep the fabric pulled tight for easier cutting. This was another good video with useful information.
@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry
@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry 3 года назад
I am with you with the finger holes, I have also a small version for small details which has this problem. There are larger versions though. But you lost me with the 3rd hand, I hope you mean you have a helper?

@@tatyanasurenyan-krech6372 Palette is the Babylock version of the PE Design from Brother, the two are virtually identical. It just happened that I bought it from a Babylock dealer. Very expensive system and a very steep learning curve, but once you know how to use it, it really allows you to work with embroidery designs.

Are they good for heavier materials such as canvas and denim? I have small curved emb scissors I use for quilting cotton applique but am needing a heavier duty pair
@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry
@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry 2 года назад
Well, we are not cutting big pieces of fabric here, the scissors are for intricate cuts when you make appliques mostly and for cutting embroidery threads close to the fabric, etc. My scissors are sharp and they would cut canvas and denim, they cut batting perfectly, stabilizer, felt. I have never used canvas for appliques. But I think it's better to buy brand name scissors, I am not sure about no name ones. Also, there are different sizes of duckbill scissors, so you might look onto it.

Do you know how to sharpen these type of scissors? Thank you.
@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry
@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry Год назад
Any scissors can be sharpened somewhat with the needle trick: you take an old needle and pretend to "cut" it. Place it in the scissors at about 45 degrees angle for that. But I think for best results you should try a professional service, even if these are not cheap. It may be cheaper to get a new pair of scissors.
