Love your enthusiasm, but you'll know within a week or two the duckweed is back in full effect.

MsTokies, you are correct that duckweed growth occurs when there are too many nutrients in the water, and that adding more large plants along the banks of the pond would also help. Things like preventing fertilizer runoff, picking up after pets, and preventing grass clippings and leaves from washing into the pond are all great examples of how to reduce nutrient pollution. Hillsborough County residents benefit from our active Adopt a Pond team that helps neighborhoods do just as you advised.

We're dealing with different but similarly ugly situation, which an environmental scientist identified as an organism called Ophrydium versatile, which similarly mars the appearance of the surface because as it dies, it floats. Its difficult to remove because a rake or similar tool goes right through it. It looks like your use of the silt fence and pump might work, but just what kind of pump did you use? I would have thought a pump (anything like a swimming pool pump) would quickly get all gummed up internally from all the material getting trapped inside. Also can such a pump with hoses be rented?

Hi Would be better to remove the duckweed well away from the water as you will add nutrients back to the water as it rots down and start the whole cycle again. Just cleared a 3 acre lake here in the UK using booms to trap it then dragging the weed to remove it. Work with the wind it can save you hours of labor. Like the pump method.

STRING 20 FT OR MORE OF POOL NOODLES TOGETHER WITH 50 LB TEST FISHING LINE AND TIE A REMOTE CONTROL BOAT TO EACH END. GET TWO PEOPLE TO DRIVE THE TWO BOATS IN TO SHORE GATHERING THE MUCK IN A SMALL CIRCLE. AND THEN USE A LARGE SCREEN FRAME TO PICK IT UP. FEED THE LINE THROUGH THE POOL NOODLES WITH A HEAVY SINKER.

If you miss one tint plant it will regenerate in no time. My garden posnd is 8ft by 6ft and I cant get rid of the stuff. The pond [or lake] they are skimming has no plants above the water. Mine does and the Duckweed grown in between the stems and roots of the plants.

Loved the video. We would be happy to harvest duckweed local to the Tampa/St Pete area. We use green sustainable methods. No toxins ever. Our animals and compost love it.

Dana Lewis If you're still interested in doing this, I've got several ponds that could use it.
