@@DL-rp4lu I’ve come to the sad conclusion that some people need things spelled out for them. I’m well aware that Peter Benchley wrote JAWS. The idea I’m speaking of has to do with DUEL. Not even for its day, IMO. This is a fascinating movie peppered with genuine suspense- so few movies are. Hitchcock truly was a master at it. (To me, true suspense has nothing to do with gore-and is much more difficult to film.). Sure, if you go to films to see gore, don’t bother looking for the suspense genre-you cannot even compare them.

That scene is ridiculous. For one, why not simply haul on the handbrake and leap out of the car? Second, what is the point of sticking your head out the window and yelling "Hey!" when a train is thundering past, your engine is revving and the truck driver clearly isn't going to be stopped by yelling at him? In this whole movie there were umpteen occasions when Weaver's character could have turned the tables on the truck driver.

All of the railroad scenes were filmed after the movie was completed as producers thought the running time was too short. It was originally shown on TV, on ABC's 'Movie Of The Week' minus this sequence. The truck is a different one to the one in the rest of the movie. Spielberg, in his first directing role, gives himself an obscure namecheck in the film. (The pest control van with the company name 'Grebleips' - Spielberg backwards.)

I have only just now realised the trick they did to avoid breaking the boom gate. When Dennis Weaver stopped at the gate, he was on the correct side of the road, but then the scene was changed to the incorrect side of the road to clear the gate. You get glimpses of the gate in the down position while the truck pushes the car through as both are passing the end of the gate.
