It is one of the best cinematic sword-fights for sure. The choreography is amazing, it's easy to follow, you can gauge the skill of the participants and it tells a story. It isn't realistic, but of course it isn't meant to be. I am a big fan of the duel at the end of the movie Rob Roy, which is also brilliant, but in a different way.

To this day, I think this is the most beautifully choreographed fight scene I’ve ever seen. Also, I appreciate the artistry of it so much more as I’ve gotten older compared to when I first saw it as a 9-10 year old. Truly awesome!!

Exactly, I believe she did say she still could have beat her but held back in a later scene when was talking to the guy who owned the sword I forgot his name. Even if she didn’t say it I know she could have it just wasn’t her intent as it was to probably more so teach her a lesson.

Yes, 100 %.... Shu Lien is seriously OP at this moment, but she is significantly older, so some could say that Jen, being the child of this martial arts prophecy, would surpass her and all the masters by the time she reaches her age, even without the sword.... I guess the importance of giving her that invincible sword now is to help her training by boosting her confidence and "ego" million times

You can be very good but all the time in the world won't give you the talent to be a genius. Same here. But Jet is almost her equal here.

One of the best fighting scenes in cinema history, and by two women which shows strength and power is alive in anyone who fights. Not once did the flow of energy look fake. Ang Lee had mastering emotional control and the editing and music all worked.

its amazing because its NOT supposed to look like Choreography ... its supposed to look like they are fighting. and they are Fighting very well here. The annoying part is when movies do fight scenes and it DOES look fake and coordinated ... this looks like they are really going at it.

Jen had the better weapon and some skill but Shu Lien was older and far more experienced. Jen relied on the sword way to much and got cocky.

Idk did we watch the same scene? It seemed it the whole fight that Jen was only able to keep the advantage due to the sword she had. Without it, it's clear she wouldn't have stood a chance.

Doesn't Lo mention at the beginning of the film that she prefers to fight with a dao (what she starts with) and Li likes to use a jian (the type that the Green Destiny is, and the sword she uses at the end)? So she adapts to using a series of weapons that aren't her specialty before finally taking Li's mantle and overpowering Jen. Very beautiful.

I noticed that too, not sure if I caught it the first time. Also not sure if dao was translated as "machete" the first time I saw it, but it helped me this time around because you can see why you might translate it that way... So many cool weapons.

This was such an amazing movie. The split at 1:52 amazing and just wow. What a movie. Zhang Ziyi really left an impression honestly with her loveliness and acting. A student that has far surpassed her master and is also arrogant and doesn't listen. But then gets taught what life is about.

What's crazy about this seen was Michelle Yeoh mostly. She tore her ACL in an early scene so in here she had to stay stationary for her close up shots and had a stunt double do the wides.

I sensed a clash of generations happening here as well as jealousy and anger at work. Youth's energy and determination versus age's experience and perception. Lo said it best, too: "Without the Green Destiny, you're nothing." It was her way of saying "If you didn't have that thing, you'd be dead right now." I need to re-watch this movie, now!

I saw CTHD when it first hit theaters back in 2000. This is one of my favorite cinematic fight scenes of all time! Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi made their sword fight look like a graceful yet fatal ballet.

The part when she first grasp the green destiny with the two swords...there was a pause, expecting the apprentice to counter, she didn't and she flipped the young apprentice....but the 2nd time she grasped the sword, she corrected her mistake previously, to destroy the other sword...this movie is beloved by me and many...excellent movie...stands the test of time...

Let me tell why this scene is so special, and it isn't just the choreography...its the feelings and background to this scene. Shu Lien has been in love with Li forever. Than this girl comes in... he's all over her...and she's been playing self denial and politeness with this spoiled brat for Li's sake. When she finally confronts Jen here, she's able to unleash all her pent up rage and jealousy on this girl...and you really see it when she picks up the huge monk's spade to smash Jen with. In the end, it's unmistakable who wins here. Shu overwhelms the green destiny's power and even it's skilled user.

Did Li really all over her though? The reason Li attracted to her was because she is using the same fighting technique that Li uses. Abd Li's technique only passed down to male. That is why he was wondering why a women being able to use that technique. And decided to make it his mission to teach her the proper one. But of course I could understand from Shu Lien POV if Li was attracted to a younger and beautiful woman.

Of course, I'm not saying that Li is even attracted to Jen, only that Li us intrigued and impressed with Jen...who is free to be the woman Shu wants to be. It's all POV. Shu and Li make excuses to talk to each other and have tea. Jen and Li trade meaningful blows and playfully interact. Shu wants that, she wants to be free (and we learn Li does too) of the respect and tradition that keeps them apart.

Not only that, but Li was originally about to retire, so Shu Lien and Li would finally be able to share some time together... then Jen showed up, making Li instantly ditch his plans of retirement, fully commited to making Jen his one and only diciple.

Wow what an amazing scene beautifully choreographed so fast and strong but so graceful at the same time, no CGI, great music amazing above shots and use of camera angles, and the fact the movie built the characters to have a strong emotional connection and history before hand makes this scene even more meaningful and intense to watch ..... master class in movie making and on how to create two strong but beautiful female leads just lucky I get to see it

actually most of it is michelle, she does almost all her own stunts, because she’s/was a dancer so she’s able to use what she knows to create martial arts scenes herself, even though she gets hurt.

Amen! I am a big fan of the hk movies from the ninetees. I used to watch the John woo, tsui hark, wong fei hung with jet li, some wu xia pan, Jackie Chan... But my favorite kung fu movie is this one.. 'crouching tiger brought poetry, and chow, Michelle and Zhang are awesome. Yuen woo ping did for me one of the Bea choreography in his career... Love that movie so much

To think that this film stars 3 generations of cinemas greatest female action stars of all time, from the og Cheng Pei Pei in come drink with me through to zhang ziyi in that that station fight in The Grandmaster, between the three of them some of the most iconic fights in cinema history - and Michelle is still going strong!
