Im grateful you introduced me to Dugin years ago and it has helped me understand so much of what is going on in the West.. it provided the key lens to see the battle between multipolarity and hegemonic dominance of the West.
He's a dangerous man. A think he's in favor of genocide to achieve his means. He's a confused philosopher the thinks the world in heideggerian abstract confused terms. He's not right-wing. and not a traditionalist in the western christian sense. He's closer to Stalin and Mao.
I find the paper a bit cliché, a prejudice, especially about Russian obscurantism. In my opinion Dugin is a metaphysician, quasi-theologian, very conservative and Russian nationalist.

In the journal “Questions of Nationalism” (whose editor-in-chief was the late Konstantin Krylov, a leading ideologist of Russian nationalism and a rather original thinker), a cross-cutting theme (even with a separate regular section) was criticism of the Eurasians and Dugin. Individual issues (for example, 11/2012) were entirely devoted to this controversy. UPD Most of the article is some kind of feverish nonsense, you can take sentence by sentence and refute it.

I'd like to know where the word "occultism" actually comes from; is it the same as 'esoterism' - which is more a type of knowledge or understanding than a concrete set of practices? Would be interesting to trace the word historically. I relate it more to magic and stufff, which is a practice, and from a Christian perspective could be something demonic, and not a way of understanding. which is what I think esoterism means.

Maybe he is a liberal, but in this video which is the only one I've seen of his, he seems on the contrary very, very balanced. The European Conservative article seems to presume that Dugin still subscribes to his 80s-90s nаtsoc-nаzbol occultism. Years ago a mutual acquaintance told me that for the past 10 years Dugin has mostly been embarrassed by his older stuff. Also, I'm not convinced that Russians are all that receptive to that kind of thinking, if they are it's barely more than irreligiously predisposed peoples like Westerners.
Dugins writings are a perfect chronology for his shift in ideology. Probably the main driver of his views being so common among young partisans is that he reflects our ideological journeys, like the 15-y/o changing their political views radically meme. He went trough the turbulent changes in Russian 90s to the 2010s, in where he saw a dying empire become a stable state, soon to a global power house. His idealism became a semi-materialist geopolitik, he talks of the Russian national experience from hopes to deeds, and it made him a man who now is more grasped of reality than any other thinker who lives among ideologies. He reached the Dasein.
I grew up in a Russian family and in my experience, Russians are indeed very predisposed to the occult, although maybe not so much in its philosophical variations, but definitely with rituals. Basically, Russians are infamously superstitious, and a lot of the solutions for these superstitions are occult-ish rituals. Also, Russians celebrate Maslenitsa which is a literal pagan holiday left over from before christianization lol. Maslenitsa celebrations include the making of special dolls and burning them on sacrificial bonfires. I think a lot of this occult stuff was fuelled by the atheist Soviet Union… as mentioned in the article. The revival of Orthodox Christianity in Russia is still relatively new, but allegedly gaining popularity. However, Orthodox Christianity itself is very focused on rituals and making things look nice, so it could be seen as inherently appealing for a pagan mindset / lifestyle….
It matters a lot when you consider that the essay author is a "conservative" Roman Catholic and no fan of the current pope. More guilt by association. This author is a classic gas lighter and probably a direct descendant of the papal legate who delivered the bull of excommunication to the Patriarch of Constantinople in 1054. Dugin is a threat to Aquinas and a trad Catholic cannot stomach that.
The guy writing in the European Conservative gets a lot of basic facts wrong. If he was really interested in persuading people to break from Dugin's influence, you'd think he would be concerned with getting these facts right so as to maintain his credibility.
A lot of Dugin's critics seem to want to contain him within a certain neat & easily understandable box and then poke him from a safe distance. That is both an easy and a hard thing to do since he dabbled in so many things that you can cherry pick a lot of them to support a lot of predetermined conclusions (especially if you prioritize his contacts over his writings or commentary). Kind of a mess, but then so was the period when he was formed in. Though I think the key term in that article is not 'occultist', but 'dangerous' as it seems to prioritize scaring people away with a claim of him being occultist by association. Scare away from what? From studying him rather than properly informing yourself about him. It also relies more on ignorance regarding certain topics and general suspicion to make its, at times exaggerated, claims. One thing Dugin would probably (definitely?) agree is that the Western & Russian conservatism differ in many ways. There will always be a lot of disagreements as the Western thought is more specialized, narrowly defined, often reductionist, impatient and dismissive of anything that comes from Russia (or overly hopeful about it, especially when it starts talkig about a mysterious Russian soul). That other extreme, a rather naive one, is to present Russia as some sort of savior of all Western conservatives, which is little more than a projection of a 'shining city on the hill' that just doesn't fit. Neither of those extremes are particularly productive if you want to learn.

The one thing this author apparently doesn't know about Evgenii Golovin is that he was a proud mischling. Not that Jews can't be Nazis, but highlighting the name "The Black Order of the SS" is misleading. It completely disregards the fact that this was occurring in the early 1980s in the Soviet Union under Brezhnev. The evocation of esoteric Nazism was about as heretical as it got back then, and the heresy aspect was the main point. I haven't finished the video, but Dugin's episode with the ethno-nationalist political organiztion Pamyat' ("Memory") in the late 1980s perfectly illustrates my point. He was kicked out of Pamyat', along with Geidar Dzhemal' (another founder of the Yuzhinskii Circle in the mid-to-late 1960s) for being (to paraphrase) "a subversive Freemason k*ke." The reason for this was because Dugin has always rejected racism of all forms, to include anti-semitism. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of Dugin's political career knows this. But it is always glossed over if not outright obfuscated, because his very sincere anti-liberalism and anti-westernism isn't villainous enough for the common onlooker.

Speaking for myself, I really only became aware of the narcissist personality type as a thing in the last few, let's 10 years, even though. Approximately in the same time frame the word and the concept of "gaslighting" came into common knowledge. Scott Mandelker who has commented extensively on spiritual teachers and writings, and who himself is a professionally trained counsellor, and a meditator, points out how narcissist personality is fundamentally weak and damaged, despite their bravado. Some years ago there was the film The Corporation, which asked, if corporations had a personalilty type, which one would it be? Of course it sociopathic or psychopathic. What got my attention with regard to Dugin was that he asserted spiritual values that align with my viewpoint. I have been a student of esotericism and a practioner of occult meditation for over 25 years. He struck a chord because what he stands for is a healthy nationalism. I have predominantly studied Helena Blavatsky, Alice Bailey and Helena Roerich's writings. These writings cannot be engaged with through intellectualism, they require intuition in order to grasp their meaning. The occult mediation produces the capacity for intuition. Within the framework of those teachings, a nation is a sacred entity with a purpose and a set of goals that are part of the jigsaw of humanity. Russia is the gateway between east and west or the orient and the occident. The soul of Russia is a manifestation of Cerimonal Order or Synthesis, an attrribute of divinity. It's personality is one of Devotion and Idealism. The revamping of Russia's society and the advances in technology it has achieved come from its soul. In 2005 I was informed that the forces of materiality (The Lords of Materiality) were attempting to establish a third point in their axis of power, within the nation of Ukraine. It was actively focused upon in order that it would fail and it certainly looks like it will. The other two points are in Tel Aviv and Washington (particularly the Pentagon and the State Department). I haven’t read Dugin yet, and I’m not a scholar, but from growing up in a Russian family, I can confirm that Russians tend to be quite fascinated with “occult” things, which would be perceived as idolatry and apostasy by many western protestants. It’s not bad to learn about perspectives that occult and pagan ideas can offer (out of curiosity) but I’d say that the average Russian should to spend less time learning about that and more time learning about what idolatry means, because … maaan, I don’t think the average Russian has any adequate conception of idolatry (i.e. they have the strawman understanding of idolatry) or how it opposes creationist arguments. Also, after learning about Islam, I’ve been thinking that this fascination with the occult is inherently built into Christianity… not that it doesn’t exist in some Islamic traditions either, though 😅 Like, it’s no wonder that Dugin is digging for the meaning of the logos in occult / pagan traditions when it’s literally the founding principle of Christianity… That said, any protestants who try to reject the existence of this pagan legacy in Christianity are also being hypocritical…
If I am not mistaken, Alexander Solzjenitsyn had great contempt for this Yuri Manleev up to the point of labeling him as a complete non-entity as a writer, in any case a rather violent dislike he voiced at him, which was not habitual in Solz. Trying to puruse Dugins thoughts and hearing him interviewed, and considering his philiosophical analyses, it seems apparent that his point of view can only comport with a genuine biblically grounded Christian perspective.
I think the author has some confusion regarding occultism, paganism, esotericism and politics. As a pagan and occultist, I am uninterested in politics and tired of the christian attitude that anything non-christian is satanic. Satan is a christian idea not a pagan or occultist one. Rather, what people like me are interested in is the descent of humanity into materialism - represented by transhumanism, the current system of capitalism espoused by the globalists. We believe in natural law and we see nature and its personification through the gods as key. We see this materialsim as against nature and against spirituality and we see the extinguishing of human spirituality as the extinction of humanity. If there is evil as envisage by christians - it is this materialistic, transhuman future denying our true godlike nature. He talks of the left-hand path - the left hand path is actually the left side of the tree of life and synonymous with the divine female. It has nothing to do with christian ideas of evil and satanism. It has everything to do with traditional human spirituality and veneration of the divine female - neatly circumcised from the christian faith en route to its materialistic, transhuman future. I can see that Dugin seems to have similar views but I feel the author of this article is using words that have a very different meaning to him than to people like us based on a completely distorted view of occultism etc.

At 45 min. the part on the old testament being creationistic and the coming of Christ as a refutation of that idea is new to me. I know Dugin has spoken on the Jewish old testament as ill-fitting with the Indo-European logos which is more Greek.
Two things: 1) Nationality as a justification for action is not valid under traditionalist worldview, as it is viewed as temporary phenomenon, thus contradicting to the idea of tradition which is deemed to be eternal or timeless 2) If nationality (or lack thereof) is viewed as a sufficient justification for action, then I claim that the Ukrainian nationality was established and legitimized immediately after the first Russian soldier had crossed the border with weapon

I recommend anyone this comment resonates with to read the recognitions it has a major character who is a minister with a similar style as dugin and he studies religions all day and goes a bit insane, but it atleast shows the idea that Christianity traditionally wasn't xenophobic to these things, i recall even aquinas writing about some ancient GrecoRoman occultism with serious interest but ultimately he rejects it

Thank you for digging into these topics. I am reading many books on philosophy. I can see Dugin interested in Heideggers idea to found a new philosophy. A noble but difficult cause. Schopenhauer used a purely materialistic view which is a dead end. Useful but not all encompassing. Although Rudolf Steiner not taken seriously as a philosopher as he integrates spirituality I feel this is necessary as humans are spiritual at least many are. Steiner has 6000 lectures so it’s very much a journey to learn his ideas. Also he was a polymath. Also he had concept of group souls which universalists do not like. Scientific experiments have now verified that human thinking approach is not universal. Westerners are more individualistic than Asians. Of course universalists will even say men and women are the same lol
