This is the full narrated version of my one year full-time dugout canoe build. I built the canoe for a 1500km solo expedition up Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, surviving completely off the land and sea.
Aside from describing the challenges of the build I also explain how I build it with the tools available 1846 shipwreck survivor, James Morrill. I'm placing myself in his historic predicament to see if I can sail up the reef to an old rescue haven set up on the remote northern tip of Australia.
I'll be releasing an entire RU-vid series about the upcoming expedition plus a feature film and roadshow tour of Australia with the film and canoe.
Please consider subscribing to see my entire Surviving the Great Barrier Reef expedition series plus checkout my previous adventures.

In an age where most guys can't even change the air filter on their rig, it's great to see this kind of talent making something from nothing.....I'm guessing that your dad passed down alot of his own practical abilities. Great adventure.

Okay boomer. Maybe not all our dads have been present to pass on these skills for us. They been busy ruining the housing market, destroying the planet and struggling to open pdfs, to actually be a good parent.

Hey Mike...!!! Just found your video tonight while reviewing questions from students...There are lots of things I would suggest doing differently, but I mean that as a HUGE COMPLEMENT...!!!...since you really went through this process in the true spirit of discovery as found in "experimental archaeology" and traditional craft learning being done today by many... After 40 plus years of teaching traditional life skills (what many now call "bushcraft") and traditional woodworking, you are to be commended for your wonderful efforts. I really will look forward to reviewing and watching more of your video efforts and the fine job you do as a videographer!...

If you ever dig out another canoe and cracks develop drill a hole at the end of the crack and it will stop the crack from continuing on. We do this with metal work as well before we repair a weld.

Didn't people used to burn out logs to speed up the build process?
@CreativeCadaver13
@CreativeCadaver13 2 года назад
I'm so impressed! I'm in awe. And all that chopping, and you've still got all your fingers and toes intact. Re the chainsaw, you're more likely to trip the chain brake should the saw kick back if you have the thumb of your left hand WRAPPED around that handle. Might make the difference between a closed head injury and a splitting headache and grey matter to show off to your kids. Sort of like wearing a seatbelt loosely vs snugly. Beautiful dog. Where at PS did you dive for the abs and crays?
@OutbackMike

Thanks Derek, and thanks for the tip on the chainsaw! I can’t give away my secret cray spots sorry🤣. They’re hard enough to find as is.

I give you great credit for building this it is I'm sure intense hard labor that requires dedication. Awsome job. Buuuut you continuously reference a ship wreck survivor that you mimic. He built his raft from wreckage not a log, he most definitely did NOT have gloves tools (especially) power tools and I'm almost 100% sure nothing you did here even resembles his journey.
@coolissimo69

Question Mike how did you fix the cracks on the wood?
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike 2 месяца назад
Wetting the wood allows it to swell and close the cracks. I used salt water too to stop mould growth. There were cracks in the stern which still leaked though so I plugged them with native bees wax (also borer holes and wood knots)
@coolissimo69
@coolissimo69 2 месяца назад

I think if. you would have cut out planks from the trunk and then made the canoe it would have been faster, the dug out method definitely wastes a lot of wood.
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike 2 месяца назад
Possibly. I only cut planks out so as not to waste wood.

On TV/movies yes, in real life, nope. Trying to set fire to the interior of the canoe would just ruin it, be impossible to judge how much was burnt and take forever too, an adze is hundreds of times faster than burning a controlled fire inside a canoe.
