Hi all! Some have seen these videos and some haven't. We decided to collect all the videos about the dugout into one long video. We wish you all a good mood and enjoy watching! Instagram: / mypersjournal
Wish I was younger and in better health so I could even attempt to do this. Shoot! I wish I had the land to consider having a cabin like this built for me. I lost my wife (9/2020) and son both fifteen years ago. This house has too many memories that hurt every day. A place like this would be just the right refuge to escape and forget the pain. Great, fantastic, awesome job. Good for you. Enjoy it!
I am no expert, but I think it would be better and safer for the door to open inwards, and not outwards. 1) anything falling outside could block the door and lock you inside (heavy snowfall, tree falling, ...) 2) if you want to be able to make the door "lockable" to prevent undesired people from entering, for the moment anyone could unscrew the hinges from outside and get in. Nice work though :)
I agree with you. I have watched tons of these videos and almost all of the doors open inwards. With the door opening outward, anyone with nefarious intentions could trap him inside and, for instance, set fire to the cabin and burn him to death.
After a while of binge-watching these videos, this is the first cabin that actually makes sense. It has reasonably sized and thick floor planks + wall logs and proper insulation between the logs. The only thing I would change is where the chimney is. You get a better draft when you make the chimney to go straight through the roof rather than horizontally through the wall.
As a Ex stove installer, fireplace mason and chimney sweep, you should have no more then a 24" horizontal for good draw and this vertical isn't even tall enough for that. I see he doesn't want to endanger the roof seal. So out the front or back side of the shelter would be best.
Agree about better draft. However, using basic materials like he is, would be next to impossible to ensure no leaks after a hole is cut in the roof. A trade-off.
Burning wood to protect it against moisture is the most ancient skill we have completely forgotten about .. instead we use chemicals and toxins to poison our living environment .. thumbs up for such a fascinating project and being eco-friendly!! 😁👍
Weh yeah! Golden, more toxin's from people! Such talent! Culture shock my ass! Greed just like the first time I seen it! Still looking to leave the same as anyone else!!! Preferably with a person who speaks english!
You are very inspiring. It’s great to see the younger generation enjoying the forests and living simply. I look forward to more videos. I wish people here in the states felt the same. Thankyou for your hard work.
Hugs and prayers. You both are so strong to continue to build and share your lives with us. That being said, I love you n will continue to support you and your fur babies and family. So sorry for your loss Summer. ❤
I am really fascinated by the living space in your house. Can you make more video tutorials on decorating and space layout? I would love to watch and learn from those videos.
It's nice to see one of these where there's actual mistakes and struggle in the video, other videos like this they cut them out and make it seem effortless
He shows you how to use the wood you find in the woods to make shelter and or build for living off the grid. Which I have to say he does so very well on all his builds great job ..
@carmine redd They wouldn't put you in prison. The gov't would make you stop doing this or would fine you. If you were doing this on someone else's undeveloped land, then they could press enough charges to imprison you. The gov't basically leaves stuff like this alone unless private citizens make, as the saying goes, a federal case of it. Most often, if an individual doesn't own the land, then the state (not federal) government does. And you can't just do whatever the hell you want on someone else's property.
As an old woman who has had multiple back surgeries, I'm sitting here yelling at you to "GET A ROPE!!!" to drag those trees. As much as I absolutely LOVE to watch your videos, sometimes you really scare me. I have sons around your age & I would likely have palpitations of the heart if I witnessed them lifting heavy so many times.....& THEY ARE BODYBUILDERS! LOL I guess what I'm trying to say is, next time, bring some rope with you & always keep some handy in the cabin. Please. There is a reason they call it back breaking work after all. 💖💖💖
I enjoyed seeing the strong, calculating, hard and soft side of you in this presentation. It was very engaging and thought provoking. The strength it took to drag the logs and lift in place, the cutting and sawing to make them fit perfectly and to finish off your work with a beautiful display of humanity, preparing a bird feeder for God's small creatures with a twig to celebrate the season. Your video showed an honorable and noble side of things you find endearing. Thank you from California.
I like this method of applying Japanese "yakisugi" style burn seal to the wood before setting it in the ground. I remembered your vid and had to forage my watch history to find this again. Definitely will take note of this. Your method will make for a longer lasting foundation with the logs. Thanks for sharing this.
Amazing!!! I build one myself long before i saw the first youtube video. Didnt know they even exist. Excellent design. Only thing i wonder is how you atrached the logs for the walls to stabilize the wall. Kind regards.
I absolutely hate camping (I’ve had so many bad camping experiences, too many to list but first period, broken bones, and food poisoning are some of the highlights) and putting together ikea furniture makes me feel like an expert builder. But I honestly can’t stop watching videos like this. So fascinating to me.
I love watching videos like this. I have never built any kind of shelter, other than a little one out of basket willow for my kids, but I hope to build one one of these days.
I see you make no mistakes, a sign that you have done this before. I would have reworked many things which I didn't plan well. You must then be a skilled woods man. I too like the silent method in which you present your video. These skills you show us everyone should know. The world has changed into a place far away from our roots. Thank you for keeping them alive
Watching you makes me wonder how many "Secret" getaways my oldest GrSon has like this. I can definitely see him doing this around MTRN somewhere!!! Amazing job!!
Such an inspiring show, even at an unhealthy 74 years it made me feel like getting in there and helping you. Please keep up the great work. Tom Queensland Australia
❤ How strong you are, I always wonder when I watch such films. 1 does he also go there again to relax? 2. Do you do that on your own land or just somewhere in the woods? 3. Would he still have a job?❤ God bless from the netherlands
This by far my favourite hut its beautiful. The peace and tranquility you must have when you are out and about. Great content. All the best from Glasgow Scotland UK
At 61 ,I'm new to the interest of these survival/ Bushcraft vids..so I'll not comment on any techniques and or methods. I will say that in light of so many fast paced chipmunk sqeaking, he or she isn't even dirty vids..this one is a favorite. He takes time..no rush..no talking..very methodical and whether one agrees with how this guy works..he seems to be spot on. Great video
Pretty amazing to watch you build that dugout. The window was the best part now you have a great view of the woods. I think the bird feeder is my favorite part with the trail cam.
I've always been drawn to the woods as far back as I can remember my dad was the first to take me to the outdoors I used to make my own campsites in the woods by collecting fallen trees and branches, I'd go the length of over 3 chicken house's to find the right material and drag or carry it back I remember doing this kind of shelter before near my house but I didn't cut down trees I dug a square hole and collected fallen trees, made a frame, used a tarp, and built a simple shelter with a dug in fireplace complete with a small chimney
You are not an Arnold Schwartzenegger- so I have MUCH respect for You hefting those logs to the site! I hissed in sympathy watching You gage where the “balance point” was! Way to protect YourSelf out there. I admire how carefully You place Your feet when moving through the brunch and terrain- a fall is not an option out there alone.👊🏾☝🏾👏🏾🙌🏾
💯for his log cabin building skills. If he's gonna spend the night in the forest this is the way to do it. I like the grass roof very eco friendly. Not a metal in sight. The winter cabin, I think it looks cold below ground, but this chap's got some incredible building skills, so good on him for showing how it's done.
A emergency flood drain is always a good idea, even if it's a pipe going out to a rock pit' sssss, heavy snow /heavy rains + . it's no different than a basement in a house, it never hurts to double up on your floorings. Thinking about underground houses, underground home's has its benefits in some areas.
I love this. I am watching from South Wales. UK. Can someone please tell me what the earth is that he is curing the poles to stand up in. Looks like sand. I am thinking it is like this because of the mulch from the forest. Looks like he had it ordered in. Can someone enlighten me please? X
I’m an old woman with one child - a son, 35. This video is such a saga, I began worrying just like I do my own kid! Is he eating enough? Don’t lift like that, you’ll blow a lumbar disc! He never seems to sleep, when & where is he sleeping during this build? Careful with that hatchet, what are you going to do if you get hurt? Someone said he had a dog - where is your dog, young man? A little companionship out there would have been good!
Thank you so very much for your videos. This is the only thing that truly feels me with peace until I can get out into the forest myself. Praying for your continued success. Blessings to you. ❤
So Proud of you 😊👍👍👍👍👍 You're a Talented young man, and Any parent would be So Proud of You. Either you've taught yourself Extremely Well, or Someone Else, had many Talents and passed such Talents onto You. Either Way, you've adapted to the Woods and Wood Working/Building and I am Thoroughly Impressed young man !!! Awesome Build 👍👍👍😊
What a Sweetheart ! The minute I saw you building the Bird Feeder I knew all about you! But for now I'll keep my lovely thoughts to myself . You are such a gifted person and you love the outside. You also don't mind being by yourself. Me too but then I've had a long time to practice ! This is such a wonderful time of the year. I don't see Snow very much but I love it so much I can tell you love it! I hope your time here is wonderful and I wish you traveling mercies and a very joyful & blessed Christmas! Blessings on you dear Young Man. 🎄 🕯 🙏 🌟 baby
After watching twice, I'm still wondering what so much sand is doing up on the side of a mountain ? It certainly made the digging a lot easier ! Thank you for this calming and addictive presentation. Love your gloves. Blessings to you and your son.
