Ellington was completely won over by Strayhorn's fantasies and could conjure them in a way that not even Strayhorn could - a priceless collaboration...

Incredible artistry from this master. As a point of personal irony (& humility), I always thought of Ellington's genius abstractly - associating him with big-band compositions, where I've always preferred small groups & solo music in all forms. Prefer chamber works to symphonies, etc. Was,of course, blindsided by Such Sweet Thunder, immediately bought the vinyl album, mono or no. Wonderful presentation here of his searching, transcendent maturity in presenting the familiar, as if (again, for me) never-before-heard pieces, to not just delight us, but always, make us think about where the hell we are in life - & can we make life more joyous, for all? Thanks to R. in T. & the producers.
