Some people just cant get out their modern heads. A 16th century play about 15th century events is itself an historical artefact. Thankfully, it is also an incredibly entertaining artefact.

Benedict Cumberbatch performing superbly as an 8-year-old boy. 😂 Jesus, Shakespeare. What were you thinking?
@ele5583
@ele5583 Год назад
You made my day with this comment, really! 😂 I also noticed how much Shakespeare was biased towards the Lancastrians, probably considering them ancestors of the Tudors. Just a bunch of lines in this scene clearly show it.
@alexpalpatine8437
@alexpalpatine8437 Год назад
@@ele5583 The Tudors have a Lancastrian ancestry. Henry the eighth's mother, Elizabeth was from Lancaster or am I wrong? 😅
@ele5583
@ele5583 Год назад
@@alexpalpatine8437 No, Henry VIII's mother was a Yorkist, Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV. Maybe you meant Henry VII's mother? She was from the illegitimate Lancastrian line, but works like Shakespeare's and Henry VII's historians's were precisely meant to legitimate the Tudor's flimsy claim to the throne.
@alexpalpatine8437
@alexpalpatine8437 Год назад
@@ele5583 Yeah, yeah I forgot. Daughter Elizabeth wife of Henry the eighth who married him after the civil war, mother Elizabeth, wife of a Lancastrian who died and then she married Edward IV. Same names, same thing. Full of Henry's, Edward's, Elizabeth's and Margaret's, a classic thing in English history. But for the Tudor line, yeah I remember it was clumsy. Margaret Beaufort and her son came from a squire boy and the wife of Henry the sixth Margaret of Anjou, making their ancestor Jaun Gaunt descend from her. Now? 😂 I am certain I have reconnected the facts in my mind.
@ele5583
@ele5583 Год назад
@@alexpalpatine8437 exactly! 😁 yeah, the problem with the Tudor line is not only the fact that HVII's mother came from the illegitimate Lancastrian line, but on his paternal side he was of dubious origin as well.

I immediately recognized Adrian Dunbar as Plantagenet since he was so good in Richard III (1995) as the henchmen James Tyrell. I do not know if I have seen him between and it was some time. Great acting.

It's odd that Clifford calls the Duke of York, "Plantagenet". Henry VI is also a Plantagenet. The "Wars of the Roses" are internal wars within the Plantagenet family - previously known as "The Cousins Wars".
@georgfiscus2170
@georgfiscus2170 4 года назад
Richard, Duke of York chose Plantagenet as his ( family ) name.... of course Henry VI was a Plantagenet too ( but called himself Henry VI of Lancaster, just like his father and grand father... ), being a descendant of Henry II Plantagenet....
@dragons123ism
@dragons123ism 4 года назад
The question of surnames is difficult in this period and many people held several simultaneously. It was York's decision to call himself "Plantagenet" that led to Tudor historians to apply the name retrospectively to the whole dynasty. Prior to then the name was only used of the dynasties progenitor Count Geoffrey of Anjou.

Richard of York took the name Plantaganet to make himself sound more senior in the ranks of the royal nobility.
@heliotropezzz333
@heliotropezzz333 3 года назад
@@Conorp77 No. Richard Duke of York always was a Plantagenet. That was his surname. He was a great grandson of Edward III through Edward's male descendants. See wikipedia on Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York.
@Conorp77
@Conorp77 3 года назад
@@heliotropezzz333 It's a complicated business as the tradition of referring to the whole dynasty as 'Plantaganets' did not arise until much later, it's members did not all have it as an appendage to their first names and titles. However, because Richard had a significant claim to the throne if the Lancastrian line should fail, and by cognatic primogeniture arguably a superior claim, he emphasised the point by being the first (since Geoffrey Plantaganet and Henry II) to assume the Plantagenet surname in 1448, in a bid to embolden his seniority. He was not known by that name at birth.

This scene occur right after the First Battle of St Albans (1455), by then Henry VI had already recovered from his mental breakdown of 1453-1454. He wouldn't got mad again until 1460 after his second capture.
@Wardmeister
@Wardmeister 2 года назад
@@vrisbrianm4720 If it is true that he suffered from catatonic schizophrenia, then he didn't recover, he just came out from his complete catatonic state which rendered him essentially a vegetable for the remainder of his reign with only a few spurts of lucidity. There's footage of people with this illness and it shows how they remained relatively out of it even when not in a complete comatose state, one of the symptoms was even automatic obedience, showing how easily MOA or Somerset could have manipulated him. So technically during this scene he really wouldn't be taking the forefront of an argument.

Yep, though let's face it, little children can be surprisingly manipulative... 🤔 It would seem that Richard also took 'the terrible two's' to a whole new level, considering that Shakespeare also has him kill the 1st. Duke of Somerset when Richard would've been two years old. - In battle! Conclusion: He must've been a real handful. 🤣
