8 points in 20 seconds to get within 2. And then win the game in OT? And on the road. Unreal. I hated Jason Williams with everything inside of me back then. He was truly great. One of the best college basketball players ever. I hate it that he got hurt in that accident before his pro career ever really got started. Mad respect to that guy.
Thank you--even Duke haters can see real talent--his amazing talent got cut short by bad decisions, and he has now turned his experience into a positive message about that for youngsters--like it or not, that is Coach K talking
To this day Jason Williams (as he was known back then) is the best college basketball player I've ever seen. He was absolutely unbelievable, loved watching him and the teams he was on.
He's a great guy. His mother was the principal of our daughter's elementary school in NJ a few years after the motorcycle accident. He talked to me on the phone and broke my balls when he found out I attended Maryland for three years
I am only a 12 year old girl but I love basketball more than anything else on the face of this planet. I love watching it, playing it, listening to it, everything and I know basketball well for someone of my age. College basketball is a great game to watch. I love Duke. My faveroite team. Love coach K, and Jason Williams and Shane Battier are my two faveroite players of all time. The Miracle Minute was a shocking time in basketball history and me and my best friend still have fun re-enacting it.
Keep in mind duke beat Maryland 4 times that year, including that final four game where duke was down 22 points and wound up winning by 11. This was my favorite sports team ever, what a talented group. So many story lines and magic. There was Jason Williams going in an 18-0 run by himself against ucla in the sweet 16, there was mike dunleavy jr out scoring nc state by himself in the first half of a game.
I've listened to him talk to some kids at a camp last week. He is so well spoken, and is very well educated. He is a champion. He HAS the heart of a Champion. Not had.
I had to check out this highlight after reading Jay Williams's book 'Life Is Not An Accident'. What a great read!!! He broke down this miracle minute, it was sweet!!!!
I remember this like it was yesterday.....my mother and I had just come home from a high school basketball game and it was snowing....I was lucky enough to watch this epic comeback plus overtime
ross vandenberg lol oh wow...Thanks for correcting that for me...That's even crazier, because they didn't even foul them during the entire 34 seconds..I agree that was insane...Hope the rest of the tourney has those types of games...
Jason Williams is to this day the best college basketball player I've ever seen. I don't think I will ever love a player as much as him. This comeback is so epic.
What an amazing, amazing game. When we were watching it the first time, we never had any doubt that Duke would win. Send this to all your friends to celebrate its ten-year anniversary today!
These teams lived at the line this game. These two teams combined for 62 free throw attempts in regulation, 36 for Duke and 26 for UMD. For comparison of an ACC game I watched yesterday, UVA and Syracuse shot 29 FTs total. That's insane
Yes--the "3 Headed Center " that took out UNC at home on their Senior night--loved it---0ld Roy the biscuit boy was stunned along with all his baby blue tar holes--HA
I remember this like it was yesterday and it still makes my skin crawl! I've never seen a team completely implode the way Gary's team did that night and probably never will again! Go TERPS!
Yeah but you have to force at least three very quick turnovers, or foul and hope that your opponent misses all of their free throws, or some combination of those two. That's almost impossible, especially against good teams.
Lol I remember this like it was yesterday. When the buzzer sounded my brother ran upstairs and told my dad what happened and my dad yelled at him acting like he didn't care because he hated duke so much smh. Definitely the greatest last minute of regulation in duke history with my favorite player leading it. It's a shame he got hurt...
I was so pissed off and went to bed with a few minutes left to go. My dad came in the next morning and said “Duke had a big win last night.” I didn’t believe him until I ran and looked at the newspaper. I couldn’t believe it.
What's so good about this is, we met them later in the semi finals of the ncaa tourney, and beat the Terps again. Then went on to win it all. #Dukenation
Every time I think of this game I'm reminded of being at a friend's house at the time. He was not at all interested in sports of any kind, and never watched them. We were watching a movie on TV, and I switched channels to the MD/Duke game while he ran to the bathroom. When he came back it was 90 to 80 MD with just over a minute left. I had to damn near beg him to let me watch the end of the game, but he did. He and I were able to say for years after that that we watched the "Miracle Minute" live".
Williams also go into a motorcycle accident in June of 2003, he played for one season for the Bulls. That is why they were better, because they lasted longer in the NBA. He had a triple-double against the NJ Nets in his rookie season. He had signs of promise, he had amazing composure in late game moments, that isn't something you loose in transition between college and the pros. Let's give Williams a break and admit he would have been great.
Not just Duke that had a great team, this was just a game full of greatness. Lets not forget who else is out there: Steve Blake, Chris Wilcox, Juan Dixon, Dahntay Jones ... so much NBA talent.
Oh, is this the one from The Bear? I also watched Duke vs NC State with Steph Curry. This one is Jason Williams, and he's got one with Kobe too? Must be the greatest coach ever.
Im a UNC fan, so by association I hate Dook, but I must say, this Duke team was great and this comeback was just awesome. It almost reminds me of UNC's comeback against Duke in '74. Imagine if UNC was this good back in 01. Wouldve been a hell of a game. Go Heels!
I was in the 10th row in the student section. This one hurt. It hurt almost as much as the lead they would blow in the Final Four to Duke a couple months later.
God Bless you bro. I like Duke and obviously cant like UNC being I like Duke BUT I like basketball first and foremost and its good to see your respectful comments. The 2001 Duke team vs 2005 UNC or 2009 UNC would be fun games. Coach K and Coach Roy are both awesome coaches. Duke/UNC always fun games man and back from like ACC birth until 2002 Duke-MD, UNC-MD, Duke-Wake, UNC-Wake were fun but the realignments of conferences is messing that up man :(
Jason Williams; what a great college PG. One of only two Duke players that I really liked. Although, Kyrie Ervings rising too but I dont think he"ll stay long enough to make an impression on me. Also, I watched this game live and remember his dominance.
I was so at this game, sitting behind the DUKE bench. People were throwing things at their bench, i was very disappointed to see a few of my friends involved in this. I was so mad after this game but, my Terps got them back in 02, winning it all !!!!!
Jason Williams is the best college basketball player I've ever seen. It's an absolute tragedy that we never got to see him play in the NBA, because we would be calling Chris Paul the second coming of Jay Williams.
sheesh... I love this team too, but I believe the 91-92 & 85-86 teams were the greatest under K. This team still has greatness lingering around... coaches, NBA players, game analysts... you name it... this (still) is a wonderful group.
Wow, a lot of good NBA players on the court at once, I counted at least 8, not sure if Mouton made it or not. Anyway, I always take for granted what great caliber of basketball is played on any given night at the college level. Got to watch this live!
Play that has been forgotten in this game, Maryland's last shot in the 1st half is no good. However, the shot didn't hit the rim and instead of Maryland running the clock to halftime, Duke got the ball with 1.4 seconds. Jason Williams hits a layup at the buzzer. It may or may not been a difference maker in this game.
never fear this was topped this year by my own beloved University of Virginia Cavaliers blowing a 10 point lead against Miami in the ACC tournament with under 40 seconds to play....some mathematician even had a formula that said our collapse was statistically impossible...We proved him wrong in blowing that game!
Chris Wilcox did not play a large roll in the 2000-2001 year since they had Danny Miller but, nevertheless, you are correct. Both teams had a number of future and current NBA players.
