Thanks Mike for inviting Duma, it was an insightful interview. The idea of stimulus package as investment in the state is great idea. Mr Gqubule, I say don't worry about entrepreneurs finding the market. When you let entrepreneurs do what they do best in a conducive environment they will find the market for their innovative ideas.

Ok Duma I hear you. We have had 30 years of state intervention, heavy regulations and restrictive labour laws. Lets now try 30 years of no state intervention, low regulation and relaxed labour law that favours the employer and lets see what happens. Then on year 60 we compare the two halves and see which half created a better life for our people. Lets just see. Whichever one wins, we carry on with that. How about that?

The government can still spend more to stimulate the economy and remove the red tape for entrepreneurship to flourish. The two are not mutually exclusive. The USA is considered a beacon of free market but the government still stimulates the economy. Their dept to GDP ratio is 121% and SA is just under 75%. Japan is at a staggering 261%. There’s no thriving economy that does not depend on government stimulus. Our biggest challenge is the scale of CORRUPTION. In short both guys are right to some extent.

Duna is right that we need to spend a lot of money but he misses something very important. All of this spending has to have a desirable result. In other words if we build a high speed train there needs to be a high speed train when we are done. But we dont have the skills and due to policies like BEE and restrictions on foreign skilled workers these mega projects just cant make it. The multipliers for stimulus doesnt exist because we cant execute. There was an interview with Geordin Hill Lewis where he said one of the skills they really need is project management. We lack skills but antagonise the people who have said skills. It makes no sense.

As a Social Democrat, I agree with Duma. But as a competent human being, I don't agree with him thinking that Zuma -the man who hollowed out the state, is any sort of "family" to this nation. These are the dangers of ethno-nationalism. A dude like Duma supporting the man who destroyed our country, and thinking the ANC failing to win is not bad. The ANC is in the perfect position right now. They need to be as uncomfortable as possible, and understand that they are not rulers of South Africa. So we don't support them getting back with "buddies". They shall stay with the DA and learn to work for votes, and not get them because of "vaarbz"

You cannot "create" jobs. You grow an economy, and jobs availability automatically follow. What, for arguments sake, would the 4 million strong government building company build? I know there is plenty of infrastructure that needs building/repairing, but there is private capacity to do that. Let's not forget, losses at SOE's fall on the shoulders of the citizens. People keep pointing to the failure of the last 15 years and the poverty as an example of the policies that didn't work (not progressive enough) or even as an example of the economy only benefitting some people (white monopoly capital etc) but those same people admit to the corruption, state capture, mismanagement etc that cost the country billions not only in physical currency and employment but in potential growth through infrastructure, upliftment, services, security and investor sentiment to name a few. There is this cognitive dissonance in SA that people name and admit to these factors that did tremendous harm but then blame something else for the decline in the next sentence - as if those things didn't have any effect. Could it be this failure was as a result of these known factors and not that the policies were not progressive enough or inclusive enough or that there is some racial group cabal that is trying to horde the recourses? Before the government does anything to support business or the people lets just first get the house clean and the books open so that these proposed resources can be administered effectively. Then we can see what works and what doesn't and if all these other extreme measures are in fact even needed.
@basildlamini9156
@basildlamini9156 2 месяца назад
To actually try to blame everything on corruption and ignore that the policies are going to fail anyway makes even less sense to me. Duma spoke clearly about the problematic policies, and he actually answered the corruption question. He even dismissed the nonsense that Mike talks about when he tries the usual fear mongering tactics that socialist and comunnists would be even more corrupt. Duma said it clearly and used the example of China with their death penalty. Their government is tough on corruption but it still happens and Duma points out the policies that are working in China from an economic perspective. He did not ignore that there is corruption. In my opinion there is no government that is free from corruption and beurocracy, and Duma does acknowledge that there need to be tougher measures on corruption. I think you are the one that is trying to ignore the facts. The ANC and DA economic policies don't and won't work, Duma said it plainly. Mike out of the blue tries to put the blame on Julius Malema somehow, that the ANC youth league is the ones to blame and Zuma for those failed policies. The nonsense that free market activists speak is amazing. Stop blaming ecrything on corruption and listen to experts. It is the economic policies that don't work, just like Mike wants people to beleive that Margaret Thatchers policies worked and was once again dissapointed by an honest respobse by Duma that they actually were not.

Government spending is predicated on tax revenue. The PIC money is pension money. The foreign reserves are required to stabilize the rand, maintain investor confidence and to offer guarantee on paying off (and borrowing) our debt. So just spending 'government' money (tax payers money) when we have an overbloated inefficient public sector, is not going to work. If you want to grow the economy, allow businesses to flourish and hire, by removing government interventions. Lower tax so there is more money in the economy. Duma seems to have a socialistic point of view on the economy. And Duma is completely incorrect when he says one man takes a job from another man. We exist in a world economy, not a South African bubble. Duma, intelligent guy - start a business in South Africa. Employ people - make it succesful for at least 5 years. Then come to the table with theories and statistics. I guarantee you will have a different attitude. Listen to business people when dealing with the economy (they have the experience) - not academics and politicians.

Mike what do you mean by “you are open minded than most of your peers”? Jeez Ive been trying very hard to ignore subtle racism in you. Why invite a guest and still speak over his opinions?

This isn't the SABC where guests can say things that need questioning and they doesn't get challenged. I am not sure where you see the subtle racism however.

When did Mike mention race, even once? Typical... when someone (who is white) says something you don't like it's automatically 'racist'. Lazy argument and fuels further division. Dayum, WHEN are you guys who keep crying racism going to grow up and start working together with everyone?! THAT's the way forward, how to grow, how to develop and improve.

I also did not see any racism, perhaps some rude interjections, where a bit more listening was required.

@@sondisamvemnyama3476 Sadly racism is an easy accusation. The talking over was my difficulty in keeping the interview moving, Duma seemed to have difficulty in getting to the point or offering workable solutions. I kept quiet for more than 20 minutes but it was getting hard to hear.

Mike hates MK and EFF so much that he even disturbs Duma from speaking. There are a number of common things between EFF Vs MK Vs ANC. Duma got intimidated and didn't get a moment to breath and give u an example

Mike always looks misinformed when he is sitting next to an informed guest who has adverse views of his opinions. Today he even refused to listen, and kept talking over Mr Gqubule, because of his calm nature

Mrs Duma Siya kuzwa but here's the reality Simple Economics: South Africa has or had 5 Pillar strength which is or was Denel, Eskom,SAA , Transnet and Sars .So if these state institutions are dysfunctional not producing results then the Economy will not Grow let alone if 80% percent of Municipalities are dysfunctional all over the country the Economy will not grow ......🥱🥴
