Dumb Decisions: The DUMBEST Divisional Round Ending EVER | Buccaneers @ Lions (2023)

Dan Campbell completely botches the final kneeldown situation... only for it not to matter because Todd Bowles completely botches his timeouts? I give up. This made my head hurt
During the divisional round of the 2023-24 NFL playoffs, the Detroit Lions led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-23 with 90 seconds left. The Lions had the game won, assuming they just ran out the clock. Instead, they did anything but that, and bailed the Buccaneers out, only for the Bucs to not realize it and just have the game end. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision on both sides, and one of the stupidest endings to a game you'll ever see

This one’s on Bowles. He clearly signaled white flag, Detroit knew he wasn’t going to call the timeout or they would have ran the clock all the way down. So, there was an issue earlier where the Bucs called their 2nd Timeout, and they called a penalty and they appeared to give the Bucs their timeout back at least it was showing up on the network graphic. An NFL Head Coach has to be a clock management guru. Unfortunatly it seems like most NFL teams don't consider this when hiring a head coach and only pick their coach based on other factors like how well they did their job as a coordinator. A coordinator and a head coach are two different jobs with different required skills
@polarvortex3294
@polarvortex3294 5 месяцев назад
I'm of the opinion that every team should have a designated nerd (who may even have a small staff of his own), who will calmly follow the game and know the point, clock, and timeout situations intimately. This nerd should then have the last word when it comes to late-game timeouts, and what to go for, scoring-wise, in light of logic, analytics, and the clock situation. The head coach is often too busy to make the right call in these situations, and (as has been pointed out by you & others), often has little training or practice in running through all the complex variables anyway. You see the same thing in MMA fights where the people in the corner can't tell when their fighter's hopelessly down on the cards and must go-for-broke for a last-round stoppage if they want to win. They're too involved in giving encouragement, water, technical advice, etc., and lose sight of the big picture. They could use a detached and calm nerd too.

I was so confused watching this. Teams almost always call their last timeout in this situation even if there’s only gonna be like 10 seconds left. I didn’t know if Bowles just gave up and wanted to go home or didn’t realize he had a timeout left

its called before the drive the two coaches somehow communicated to each other that they were ready to call it done. if campbell "does it right" the bucs have like 9 seconds or something. bowles communicated to him not to bother worrying about it, so he didnt. for bowles to then call timeout would not be alright. This is why Bowles said "12 seconds" he is talking about how much time would have been left had he not signalled to campbell that his team was conceding.

Cambell and Bowles are old school. After the first kneel down when TB didn't call a timeout, that communicated to Cambell that the game was over and they wouldn't be using their last timeout. The decision on whether to use a timeout was made after the first kneel down (as indicated in his post game interview where his only response to the timeout question referred to the situation as it was after the first knee). Cambell understood this, so he didn't run the clock down as effectively so both teams could end the game 30 seconds early and not force TB to stay on the field until the last seconds of an unwinnable game. After the last kneel down, TB could have called a timeout and done all the things you said, but he didn't because by that point, he had conceeded and to change his mind would be the same as waving the white flag, then when the oppenent puts their weapon down, you pick yours back up and start fighting again. Maybe the best or only chance of winning but dishonerable in his eyes. You'll probably still prefer to believe that these two coaches are droolong morons (including all TB players on the field who could have also by rule called a timeout) before realizing they are old school coaches who put huge value in the integrity of the game and unwritten rules.

Campbell has addressed the snapping with “21 seconds left with 7min remaining “ issue. At that point, the benefit to keeping his offense in proper rhythm outweighs the clock benefits. In other words, scoring the TD is the more likely staying in rythm As for the end of the game, only thing I can consider for why MCDC and Boles did what they did is the “gentlemen’s agreement “ to end the game as quickly as possible. As you said, TB didn’t have the time outs to extend the game if the snaps were done at 39 seconds, and both coaches knew that and probably agreed to end it quicker. Lifelong Lions fan here.. I've literally watched every single Dan Campbell-coached game since he got hired, so I think I can offer up some reasonable speculation here.. I honestly think what happened was both coaches forgot TB had one timeout left. Dan Campbell makes aggressive moves, sure. It's sort of his calling card at this point. But while there's no denying he takes some very high stakes risks, I will say that he's very deliberate and calculated in choosing his spots. I would love to know how many timeouts were left on the actual scoreboard at Ford Field. Something wonky is going on here. Judging by the expressions on both coaches faces, I think Dan Campbell found out right after the final kneeldown.. he looked like he was desperately trying to put on a poker face when he realized what he had done. And I think Todd Bowles found out right after all of the players and coaches took to the field to shake hands. At that point I think Bowles realized his blunder and knew right then he needed an alibi. I think that's why he's doubling down on saying he didn't want to "prolong the inevitable". because that literally makes no sense. None. It's the playoffs. You lose you go home. There's no way in hell any coach would wave the white flag with a timeout left. Of course I could be completely wrong on all of this. Just my perspective on it.

You did a very good job breaking down McCarthy's decision to kick a PAT from the 28 after the penalties. Dak was basically responsible for the penalties. He rolled right and could have scored the 2, but he decided to throw the ball a few yards ahead to a receiver. That caused two penalties. One was the fact that a Dallas receiver threw a pick on the GB defenders. That would have been just a downfield block had Dak run, so no penalty. But Dak created the penalty by throwing. The second penalty was ineligible receiver downfield. Again, if Dak runs there is no penalty. McCarthy made a mistake going for 1, which was the icing on the cake.

A little bit of time to practically do nothing but perform a miracle play. You are basically betting on a miracle with that little time left. Even if they got a TD, they wouldnt have beaten the Lions as they were up by 2. Getting a TD and a FG is a tall order in that amount of time. Not the smartest, but definitely not the dumbest thing to have happened. I mean I dont get it, how is a FG from 50 yards and bringing it to 26 31 going to help Tampa? I mean the amount of craziness over this as if Tampa was going to magically get a 8-9 point field goal seems weird to me. Here is what would have to have happened for Tampa to win/overtime They would need to score a TD They would need to score a 2 point conversion. Or They need to make a FG at 50 yards, then score a TD In 36 seconds. Impossible, no, highly highly highly improbable? Yes
@CC-rb1yf
@CC-rb1yf 5 месяцев назад
@@user-oj7uc8tw9r?? Let's say the FG would've been missed. Ball would've been close to 40 yard line. There can be a 20 yard pass and if caught in bounds, that's still time to clock ball with maybe 10-15 seconds left and do maybe 2 shots to end zone. If ball is caught and receiver goes out of bounds, there would've been over 20 seconds. So maybe 3 pass attempts to end zone. And then if a TD happens, a 2 pointer is needed. So unlikely but not totally.
@user-oj7uc8tw9r
@user-oj7uc8tw9r 5 месяцев назад
@@CC-rb1yf Yeah, I think its extremely unlikely to do all that in 36 seconds. Because once you kick for FG I believe the ball goes back to the Lions afterward, but Im not that great in football rules You would have to make FG and then, by a miracle, receive the kickoff and run for a TD once the Lions got the ball back from way far away from the endzone as the Lions would most likely try to kick it far. And once Lions got ball after FG, they could just run the clock again by taking a while to kick. It would actually be better to go for TD first instead of FG because then you can at least maintain possession for 36 seconds and throw some hail mary pass or something.

It looked like everyone in the stadium thought TB was out of timeouts, including the announcers. It was obvious to us watching the game at home because of the score bug. But I’m wondering if was simply so loud or so bonkers at Ford Field that people either didn’t hear that the timeout had been given back to the Bucs or simply just forgot. Bowles expected Lions to kneel using all the clock which wouldve put the time to around 10 seconds. So he likely thought Bucs get the ball with very little time left and already checked out. He likely didnt notice Lions kneeled down so early. So it's stupid on his part that he didn't notice so much time was left. But if he did notice there were still 30 seconds and still not call timeout then that is baffling. But it's stupid if he didn't pay attention. And what might be worse is no one on Tampa sidelines seemed to notice either to tell him to call timeout.

The thing is that it was a catch 22. If the Bucs wanted to operate with the belief that the chance was greater than 0%, the Lions could very easily and very casually do everything they need to do to shrink that chance back down to 0%. Goff lunges back 2-3 yards for an extra 3 seconds on any/all of the knees, simply getting a first down with an offense that was hardly pressed for yards, it would have been trivial. It's not like Campbell is just a lackadaisical airhead that forgot about the play clock during victory formation and Bowles had the chance to catch him unaware, there was intent and understanding behind the decisions.

I understand the rationale that "you're going to have to get the 2 points sometime." That rationale is wrong. First of all, you don't need the two points: two kicks tie the game; take your chances in overtime. Secondly, the cost of missing the first one is so punitive that it eliminates any chance you can steal the win with going for two on the second. Even down 9 in that situation, you go for the one to get it to a one-possession game. Analytics are making coaches dumb.
